Wednesday was my birthday (28th) and it was pretty crappy. I got to celebrate by being in L&D. I actually went in on Tuesday the 21st around 5 pm. I'd been having a lot of BH's (like 32 in 2 hours!) and finally called the doctor to see what they wanted me to do... Obviously they wanted me to go into L&D to get monitored. So I did and the contrax kept getting closer together (though never painful, they were always BH's), but this concerned them enough that they gave me a shot of Terbutaline to stop them. Well, it did... For about an hour. Then they started up again, so I got a second shot. After another hour I got a few more, but then they finally tapered off. At this point Jer left to go home and take the dogs out and try to sleep, so of course I got a few more. gah. So they gave me one last shot and said they couldn't do any more than that and that we'd have to go onto magnesium if it didn't work. Well, it did. I only got one more contraction after that and I honestly believe I got that because a) I was STARVING and b) I had to go to the bathroom. Once I took care of those two things I was fine. They continued to monitor me for awhile, then let me walk around and shower to see how I'd do. They monitored me again after that and all was well, so they let me go home mid-morning yesterday (Wed July 22).

Now I'm home and on the pill form of Terbutaline for a week. This stuff makes me SO shaky, so I can't stand for more than a few minutes before I have to sit or lie down... So I'm just hanging out in bed with my laptop, some magazines, and all that. I've only had a couple of random BH's since, which is normal and they've been very weak ones, so yay. I'm terrified of next Wednesday when I go off of them, though. While I'll be glad to be rid of the side effects, I'm so afraid of this happening again! It is way too early for this baby to make an appearance!!! While I'm sure she'd live, she would most likely spend the first few months of her life in intensive care. I have NO idea what could have caused this. I wasn't doing anything active during the day, which is usually what would give me a few BH's. They came on while I was taking a nap. The doctor couldn't tell me what happened, I just got "these things happen." That isn't good enough for me, certainly there has to be something I can do to make sure it doesn't happen again. Foods or drinks not to eat (beside the obvious), things not to do, etc. But they didn't give me any of that. Heck, they didn't even think I needed bed rest. I don't really have a choice on that because of this medication, but still, isn't that normally something they'd recommend you do? I know the research on it is sketchy and it *may* not help, but maybe it does! So I don't know what to do...

Anyway, I know several of you have had this same type of thing happen. I could just really use some reassurance right now as to how all of this is going to go! Since it happened once is it likely it will happen again, or was it a fluke? I just hate feeling like a ticking time bomb!!!

I went into PTL with brady at 29 weeks. I drank TONS of fluids....even more than I was before and stayed off my feet as much as possible...that held him in utnil 35 weeks when my water broke thanks to a spider!

I obviously have no experience with this but I just wanted to say hang in there and try to stay positive. Chances are everything is, and will be, just fine. Bed rest definitely can't hurt things...

Hang in there Lauren. Get plenty or rest and just relax. I hope this is just a one time deal and your little one will stay put for now.

Happy birthday!!

I ditto the rest and relax advice. I don't know what else you can do. I will say a little prayer for you that you can avoid magnesium at all costs. I mean, maybe if you did go on it the dose wouldn't be too high so it wouldn't be that bad, but you know. Hospitals are no fun. Either way, anything to keep that bean behaving in there, right? I am sure you will be fine, hang in there and just post more on JM in the meantime

There really isn't a reason to give you--"these things happen" as crappy as it is--is usually the answer. But just remember there are many women who go into a PTL pattern and take drugs for it and then when they come off the meds have no issues. Heck Sam just had to get induced and she had tons of PTL with JJ....she went of the meds an nothing happened! LOL I have a few girls in my DDC that the same thing happened. sometimes your uterus needs a good reboot and then your good to go. I would just drink lots of water and try to keep your activity down....if your activity level didn't cause issues while you were monitored they probably wouldn't recommend decreased activity because it didn't effect the situation. sorry you had such a scary time...I hope it was the last scary moment you have!
