We met with the pedi surgeon this morning. She's the professor of pediatric surgery at the University of Texas and seemed seriously on top of her game. Since Violet has been moving things along without any assistance for the past three weeks, she's wanting to just wait and see what happens. She does not believe her small anus is the issue. In her opinion she feels that while it is on the small side, it is still well within the range of normal.
If you remember the last update, I was frustrated with the pedi GI for being contradictory on the topic of the barium enema. The pedi surgeon said BEs are notorious for being false negative for HD and we really only did it to make sure the rest of her bowel was functioning normally. She also said that a suction biopsy (which the pedi GI recommended) can sometimes also show up false negative, especially in a baby this small, at which point we would do a deep-tissue biopsy. In her opinion, she wants to wait a month and see if Violet continues to be asymptomatic. If she starts having issues, she'd rather just do the deep-tissue biopsy as that is the definitive, conclusive test. Unfortunately the deep-tissue biopsy will require general anesthesia, the thought of which makes me twitchy.
So! We are hoping that Violet continues to do just fine and all of the above will not be necessary. I also got clearance to start her on solids, which is exciting. That was a lot of fun with Lily so I'm looking forward to starting it with Violet. In other news, the girls and I are going on vacation for the next 10 days and I am FOR SURE looking forward to relaxing!
