Married/engaged ladies.. ??? (x-posted) UPDATED with the poem

So we know that we are getting married in Summer 2011. My BFF and I have been talking about mine and Chris wedding since Chris and I started dating.. we have been best friends since 1st grade, and I want nothing more than for her to be my MOH. She already knows this, but since Chris and I are still around 2 years away, when should I "officially" ask her??

Also, she lives in SC (her DH is in the Marines) and only comes home a few times a year, and we go see them at least once a year. She isn't coming "home" again until at least April 2010.. That still leaves with a little over a year of planning if I want to ask her in person (there is a chance we are going to see them in February 2010) BUUUUUTTT.. I'm very impatient and I know that there is absolutely no way I can wait that long! (Her and I talk daily on the phone, and its already killing me that I havent said anything) Do you ladies have any suggestions?? Chris said I should just ask her over the phone, but to me that seems kind of impersonal. I'm thinking about sending her a sappy card that lets her know how much she means to me, and how much it would mean to have her standing up there with me.

Help!!

UPDATE: This is the poem I am handwriting in the card

How about mailing her a card or a letter and then write on the front, CALL ME BEFORE YOU READ THIS. Then she can read it while you're on the phone together. It'll be a fun surprise and you'll be able to hear her reaction. plus it's better than just saying "hey, we're getting married, want to be my MOH?"

Well, I asked my MOH like 1 month before the wedding, so I'm no help on timing!

I would wait and ask in person, personally, since you have plenty of time to plan after that. Then again I know you probably want to start planning like NOW! Can you make a surprise visit?

I would officially ask as soon as an actual date has been set. My engagement only lasted about 6 months before we were married, and we gave asked our wedding party 5 months before the wedding. As for how, I guess that's up to you. It would be nice to ask in person but I know that's not always practical. I was in Europe and my MOH was in the US, so I had to ask over the telephone.

Im really no help, my sister was my MOH and knew right away!! I would ask her is person, thats just me though!!

I was also gonna sugest sendin her a letter and gettin her to ring you before she reads it etc.

can you do skype? Then you can *ask in person*

I like the idea of mailing her then telling her to call you but you could say "lets try skype out"... or something like that!

I'm no help either. One of my sisters told me that she was going to be my MOH and that was it. LOL!!!

Soo I went to hallmark tonight and bought one of those really sappy cards that say how much she means to me etc (card took me an hour to pick out lol) and I found a poem (that is at work so I'll post it tomorrow) that again explains what she means to me and asks her to be my matron of honor. I'm going to write on the back of the envelope to call me before she opens it. I'll be sending it out tomorrow so she should be getting it thursday or friday!

That's awesome Kaleigh. My MOH was my sister and that much was evident the second I got engaged. I would have liked my BFF to serve, but I do have a sister who was ESSENTIAL and AMAZING in how fast she got our wedding together!!

i did not make them up myself. I searched for a few days before I found them online. My BFF has known she would be my MOH since we were 7.. once I was engaged she kept talking about wearing "the big dress" so we both knew, but this way I could make it official.

I have a sister also, but she will only be 10 or 11 when we get married, so she is going to be a Jr bridesmaid, but I'm going to make it special for her, she is going to have a big say in a lot of her attire, and I will prob ask her to come with me to some of the venues and when I try on dresses (these are things I did with my aunt when I was her JBM)
