Jaxon pictures w/ small update(x-posted)

Jax was 2 wks yesterday. I still feel a little jipped about 'missing' his first week, but I'm thankful to all the staff at the nicu for taking care of him for me. So far he is a happy and easy baby. Only cries when he is hungry. He is on a pretty consistent schedule of eating every 4 hrs, which only means waking up twice at night. DH is wonderful and does one of the late night feeds/changing for me. He is a little piggy and eats about 3 oz every time, sometimes a bit more. He still has a very weak suckle reflex, so we are feeding pumped breastmilk via a bottle. He still has not had any formula yet, but with him eating so much I'm not sure how long I can keep up with him. I really wanted to bf, but right now that is just not a reasonable reality. That's it for now. I have never been so happy in my whole life. We are truly blessed to have such a perfect baby boy.

He's so adorable Jessie!!! I'm so glad everything is well and way to go for pumping so much! There's no way I'd be able to keep up with that, it takes me 2-3 pumping sessions to get 3 oz! If you want to keep your supply up/increase it just drink tons of water, eating oatmeal helps, fenugreek was my life saver with Liam, and Mother's Milk Tea was great too! Again, he's so precious!

is that common with early babies, the whole having a weaker suckle reflex?

yep.

I LOVE him and the dog picture!!!! If you don't want to, don't give up on BFing yet...I have TWO girls in my PR who RE-lactated after WEEKS! Or if you want BM and since he is a premie can you get BM from a Milk bank?

I am actually producing enough (so far) with pumping. I don't pump overnight and then every 3-4 hrs during the day. I get between 3.5-4.5 oz each time, except the first AM one I get between 5-6 oz. It's just that it seems his intake goes up 10ml every couple days and I wonder how long I can keep it up.

I hold him to my breast a couple times each day. I can get him to latch but then he might suck once or twice, then he just zones out or falls asleep. This is how he is with the bottle, as well. It takes him 45 min or so to finish a bottle with a fast flow teat on it. He will only take half a bottle with a slow flow one on (and then screams for more an hour or two later). I will keep trying- I'm just not especially optimistic that it will work. I will keep pumping for as long as I can though.

I'm so glad he's doing well. He is sooo adorable and looks like such a happy baby!

Sorry you missed his 1st week, but the rest of his life will make up for it
