I know a few moms here have used hypnobirthing. Did you take a class?
The classes in my area are very small (which equals very expensive), and they run for 6-8 weeks which is hard to work around my work schedule. I was hoping I could just get the book and be ok. Anyone just use the book?
Any thoughts or ideas would be great. I'm taking a prepared childbirth class at the hospital I'm delivering at b/c it is free. But I'm pretty sure it will not involve hypobirthing

I think that a lot of the ladies here (Angela & Anna) just got the books and CD's but I could be wrong!

I did hypnobirthing. The classes were offered at the hospital I delivered Liam at. I think they ran for 5 weeks and there were 4 couples including us. I believe it cost $180.
I was going to retake the classes when I was pregnant with Loch but I was fine with just using the book and cd again, but that's probably because I had already taken the classes not too long ago. I know when it came time to actually have my babies most of what we went over in class I didn't use--I used those couple things we learned that worked best for me.
I know lots of people do hypnobabies (which is different than hypnobirthing) and lots of those ladies do just fine with the home study course! Maybe that would be a better option for you?

Me, nikki, anna, shannon, shannon, Kate, and michelle did hypnobabies. And I believe we all did the home study.

So what is the difference between hypnobabies and hypnobirthing? Any book you would recommend?

I did the Hypnobabies home study and loved it. I actually did use it during labor and do believe it was a contributing factor in my successful all-natural birth (the majority of credit still goes to my doula and husband, though - canNOT recommend a doula enough!). The reason I chose Hypnobabies over Hypnobirthing is because you cannot study Hypnobirthing at home, by yourself. The curriculum is set up for a group study, teacher-led environment and that was just not going to work with Lee's schedule. Also, Hypnobirthing is a lot more religion oriented. For instance, I was looking over some literature and there is some 'relaxing" dialogue to be used during contractions that goes something along the lines of, "I welcome this sensation, God is bringing forth this child from my body." Don't get me wrong, I'm a Christian but I just wasn't into going that far with it, especially during labor and delivery or as a relaxation technique.

I did hypnobabies home study course. I had a positive experience with it, probably could have been better if I had practiced more. Still not a "pain free" labor which was the goal but was managable till the last bit of it, hehe.
HIGHLY recommend having a doula! That was the main reason I was able to get my natural birth.

My hypnobabies did alot for me in labor.....I was constantly using cues and Troy was giving them to me. I was in such a calm state I dozed off during the transition part! Did I have a pain free birth? No that last few minutes kind of sucked but SO MUCH better than I EVER thought it would be! one of the first things I said aftewards was "well Hel! that wasn't so bad!" HAHAHA Having Troy and Kyle (my untrained doula ) there was SO helpful. I don't think I could have done it without having that much support!
The difference between Hypnobirthing and hypnobabies that I learned was hypnobabies trains you to believe that birth can be painfree (still having pressure waves and tightness but no pain per se) where Hypnobirthing is more there is pain but your don't notice because your on a beach. it takes your mind out of what your going through...were hypnobabies is more focusing on exactly what your body is doing with the belief Knowing and understanding on why your body is doing that will make you calm in the knowledge its normal.
At least thats how I would explain the difference. Also the main reason I picked Hypnobabies over hypnobirthing----I have only known one person not to have a pain med free birth with it where the hypnobirthing (and she will tell you she didn't do the stuff much) I only knew 2 who DIDn't have pain meds (and most of these ladies took the class and everything!) so from the people I had seen it was VERY obvious which one worked better. But you get out of it what you put in it....its a little time consuming certain weeks. I viewed labor like a marathon....I don't just wake up and run one...I train for hours/weeks/months to do it. Well thats what I did-I trained and trained and trained...and then ran my 18 hr marathon (labor). Best race ever!

Now you ladies have me interested in it! Would you rather used hypnobabies/birthing or a doula?

Angela! Birth story!!!
That's awesome that your transition phase went so well. I have to say it kicked my *****. I loved pushing though, it hurt but felt soooo good.
If I had to choose, I would pick doula. I got a doula in training which didn't cost as much. For hypnobabies, sometimes you can find a used homestudy course.

Hmmm... I did hypnobithing and I don't remember it having a religious undertone. DH and I aren't very religious and I think it would have turned us off to it if it did. Then again I didn't use the scripts during labor--I'm one of those don't talk to me and don't touch me when I'm in labor kind of people.
I have to say it was completely instrumental in how well my labors went. Liam's was pain free (until I had to push and they wouldn't let me because the OB wasn't ready yet) and Lochy's was to a point as well. His was a little more intense because it went very quickly at the end (5cm to holding him in 50 minutes). I can't imagine going through labor without it and am so excited to do it again!

While having the relaxation techniques of the Hypnobabies was wonderful during labor, I would choose an experienced doula over Hypnobabies if I could only have one or the other.
