Which baby shower gifts did you find most useful/helpful.
My bestfriend is due in January and her baby shower is in a month. I dont like getting items such as clothes or things that everyone else would get. I like getting items that will actually be used frequently
My standard gift is a 238+ pack of diapers (newborn) and a huge box of wipes from Sams club, but this is my best friend so she's getting more than that.
What are some items that you found absolutely necessary? She's registered at Target and Babies R Us. The items do not necessarily have to be purchased from there.

Blankets and socks! We doubled receiving blankets as burp cloths. You mentioned Target. My favorites are the Circo brand. They come in like a 5 pack for $7-8 I think. They wash up really nicely and they're so soft.
And we would always lose those little socks.

Onesies, blankets, diapers either disposable or cloth, socks(always loose them the more the better ) if its a girl baby/infant headbands.
Nail clippers, bathroom kit; desitin, baby wash, lotions, thermometer(rectal are best till age 1).
Bouncer chair or high chair
and if she is going to breastfeed a boppy and/or different covers (with my kids in the first few weeks the cover would always be "dirty" from "spilled" milk)
A cute Idea is I see these giant piggy banks, in either pink or blue, "My first piggy bank"

the BEST item I got from my shower, had to be my pac n play - I STILL use it to this day on my 3yr old! I think bath sets (shampoo, thoes pre-soap'ed washcloths by huggies I think it was, I LOOOOVE THOES!! Also comes with lotion, bubble bath, and other things) Laundry detergent is also a good one - LOOOOTS of laundry in the first few weeks. I got a set of washclothes, and I thought, omg what a stupid gift - NOO! Lemme tell you, thoes wash clothes saved my life. Just regular terry cloth wash cloths. This is making me want to put a list together of stuff I need to get. Ill come back and add if I think of more!!

I try to get the non-"fun" items because everyone always wants to the cute stuff like onesies and such and not the practical stuff so mom alway has to buy practical stuff.
If she will be BFing get her some Lansinoh and tell her to put it in her hospital bag! Or some thing she will need when baby is little, like thermometer, nail clippers. You could do some medicines like Mylicon, Tylenol, gripe water. I know my Dh had to run out for some of those when Matthew was a newborn b/c we didn't have them. A boppy is great if she is BFing. Or extra covers for a boppy.
Some cute socks in a bigger size (we got lots of 0-3 but no bigger ones.)

Oh! Something to swaddle the baby with! I think 90% of my playroom was swaddling their babies as newborns. Either Miracle Blanket or (my preference) SwaddleMes or I think there are some other brands too. I had one but had to go buy a second b/c of spit up! Oh yeah Halo sleep sack is another one I think.

I will ditto the disposables: ButtPaste or Desitin, Mylicon, toiletries, pacifiers
The best gifts I got were a fitted waterproof mattress cover and a several fitted crib sheets. Also, I go through a sleep sack every 1-2 nights, so that would be a great gift.

I always do a basket of those little odds and ends that you don't think of picking up--tylenol, mylicon drops (or gripe water), baby body wash, baby lotion, baby q-tips (they have extra padding so they don't go too far in the ear canal), nail clippers, saline nose drops, nasal aspirator, basic thermometer, etc. A couple baby washcloths, some diapers and wipes and you're good to go. I almost always get at least one book to put in the basket too.

For me it was diapers, sizes 2 and 3 (they're out of newborn and size 1 FAST), wipes, baby lotion and wash, a hooded towel (I like the one I have), crib sheets, receiving blankets, Mylicon drops, Lansinoh cream (if she's BF), nursing pads, and baby toys in the infant section. Those are all very helpful!

A mirror for her back seat to see the baby.
Ditto the Swaddlemes or sleepsacks.
Henry uses his bouncy chair EVERY day
If you're going to make a medical/health basket, I would also include some hand sanitizer for them to give people coming to visit baby.

What a great list ladies! I don't even remember what I used most in the first couple days! I can't believe it's going to be 5 years soon since my Gem was a NB! Keep this list coming and then maybe we could sticky it or something!

I would pick something off her registry. I know at my shower a lot of people got me clothes and did not get me things I registered for and needed. Every baby/mommy is different so what I loved might not work well for her baby.
I love the basket idea that Jenn does. If you get a blanket to swaddle go with the Miracle Blanket!

I recently had a baby shower and I got the person things relating to breastfeeding because I find it to be an area that can get overlooked and you really need a lot of help during those first few months.
I got her nipple balm, disposable breast pads, milk storage bags and there was something else but i can't remember now what it was.

If she lives in a area where it's cold. I would highly suggest a BundleMe.. Preferably a Urban bundle me. The Urban Bundle is water and wind resistance. I have 2 Fall babies and I couldn't live without this item.. Makes traveling so much easier.. I'd also suggest a Miracle Blanket.. I couldn't live without these two items and it makes a nice gift.. Not to many people will have these or even know about these..

Thanks ladies!!! I'm going to get her a bouncer, a boppy pillow 4 breast feeding with different covers, 1-2 swaddlers diapers, wipes, circo blankets and onsies, and I'm also going to get her items for breastfeeding (minus the breast pump). All of which are on her registry except nipple pads and nipple balm (or Lansinoh) that I'm also going to get.
I'm also considering the Mylicon, Gripe Water and Destin.
