I had my first appointment today. I got taken back fairly quickly and the nurse asked me a ton of questions about my family health history. Then she took my blood pressure which was 106/60 (Yay for running! ) and weighed me (149 lbs - BOO for being up 6+ pounds already! ). The doctor came in and did the exam really quickly. She did a pap and a swab too. She said I feel right in the 4-5 week range. My early u/s is scheduled for Dec 29th and she wants me to do a genetic screening u/s at 11-14 weeks.

I don't know about all that. I think I'm going to switch ob's anyway and I think this doc is on overkill! She wants to do all kinds of tests and refer me to a high risk OB for further genetic testing and everything and we haven't even seen a HB yet! Not to mention there's no history of genetic problems in my family or Shane's! I'm going to stick with them until I get my u/s Dec 29th and then switch (hopefully to a midwife practice I found in my area).

I went to the lab for my bloodwork and apparently Doctor Overkill was on high alert again! They took 10 vials of blood and a cup of pee! I had to do a 1 hour glucose (who does that at 4 weeks?!) and also sign a consent for Cystic Fibrosis testing. I'm fine with getting all the BW tests done but if this doctor was more worried than me, the expectant mother, at my 4 week appointment then she's not for me! The best part of the BW was that they actually call you by NUMBERS! I was number 8! Everyone complains that doctors treat patients like a number... Well here they really do!

Anyway, I go for my u/s Dec. 29th and my next appointment is Jan. 11 (that's with my new OB!). I should get today's beta results tomorrow and then go back for another round of beta results Thursday! I can't wait to hear those numbers!

Sorry this was so long but it took about 4.5 hours to go through all this so it felt like a novel too!

Oh wow! 1 hr glucose already. I'm taking my 1 hr glucose at 25 weeks! Mine only took 1 vial of blood 1st to determine my betas and then afterwards they did an internal u/s and took a million vials of blood.

You're healthy and not even 30 or 35, why would they make u high risk? Yeah I dont blame you for wanting to switch.

Nikki - I LOVE first ultrasounds! the suspense is killer!

I gave up on my sister. I went through Shane's phone and looked at all the texts she sent him. One of them said:
"You're stuck with her (meaning me) now. You want her to be your ex and she wants a husband. So you've destroyed my family and my sons only family. So maybe you should leave my family alone or you won't like how this ends."

So not only did she tell him to leave me, she basically threatened him. Plus she hasn't talked to me since the day I posted about being upset with her. Shane made a bet with me that she'll try to get pregnant again right away because she's jealous. If that's the case (whether she gets pg or not) she can take her jealousy and shove it! I've waited 5.5 years for this BFP and I'm not going to let her spoil it!

Chelle - my thoughts exactly! I wasn't high risk with Gemma. I did have some preterm labor but it stopped easily (with an IV the first time and terbutaline the 2nd and 3rd times). I ended up going overdue with her and she's perfectly healthy! I don't mind being 'safe' but I'm not giving up my running or my normal life just because she doesn't like something that she can't define. I think she looked down on my because I'm young, single and pregnant unexpectedly. She talked to me like I was stupid and didn't want to do a beta. She ordered a qualitative hCG and when I was like "The dipstick here came up positive so why bother?" she finally changed it to quantitative. Guess she thought she could get one over on me. She's probably just out to get more money out of my insurance.

Oh and I forgot to mention that Dr. Creepy gave me a lecture on safe sex! She told me that Shane and I should use condoms and blah, blah, blah! I mean, I'm already pregnant so what else could happen?!?! I think she was thinking that since we're not married we must sleep with other people or something! What a wack job!

And she doesn't believe in FAM/NFP so she won't believe me that my EDD is 8/14/10. She will only go by my LMP which puts me EDD at 8/17/10 and means that I got my BFP at 6-7DPO. The only way she will change my EDD is if the u/s says she's wrong.

I hate doctors like that... I got a similar lecture and made to feel horrible awhile back before I had Alice. Some doctors just need to be told where to SHOVE IT!

I am glad you are switching OBs, and glad that you had an overall good first appointment! YAY for an u/s soon!

Glad it was a good appointment, even though the doctor does sound weird! I switched ob's early on because my doctor was just creepy. I am a lot happier with my ob now. I fear he is csection happy, so I could end up with a csection, but for the most part he is VERY laid back and easy going about everything. He always says, what do YOU want to do? before he offers his suggestions, which is really nice.

WOW! It does seem like overkill. I wonder what's the reason for all that stuff so early on. Did you ask them why you need all this? It just seems crazy!

On another note, that was an awful thing of your sister to text him with a message like that.

Thanks everyone! I'm so excited to call in and get my beta results but I am trying to wait until afternoon so I don't get told they aren't in yet!

Mars - my sister seems to have gone off the deep end. I just really don't care much at this point.

And I didn't ask why she was doing all that. I'm fine with knowing up front if there's something wrong so doing the CF and glucose and all was okay with me. I just don't want to do a CVS or amnio or anything else unless there is a suspicion of a problem which I don't see why there would be. The only thing I can figure is the fact that I work with radiation has her worried.

Wow -- talking about all that already?! My doc did not even mention it until i was further along, and even then she gave us an option. We declined all genetic/chromosomal/etc testing. It is possible since you work in a "dangerous field" that she is being extra cautious -- but at your 12-16 week scan, that's when they look for any visible abnormalities. As for the glucose -- uhhh... no answer for you there. My doc did not mention it until I was about 28 weeks and I declined it then because I had zero risk factors.

Did Shane go with you to the appt?

And you're not that young. So I dont get it.

Sorry that your sister is being a butthole and removing herself from your life. It might be some jealousy there; otherwise, idk why she'd do all of this. Seems like she has a bit of growing up to do.
