I made an appointment with an OBGYN today!!! I am very excited!! My appointment is Jan 4th!! I will be right over 7 weeks then!! My DH wanted me to get in earlier but I had to explain to him that most drs don't see you until 6-8 weeks!! I may just go to the local health until just to get it confirmed!

Ok so what should I expect at my first appointment????

I had my first appt at 7.5 weeks too It was so scary, but exciting too. That one was about 1 hr long.

First we dated the pregnancy using my LMP and also my OPK info. Then we discussed family health history, recommendations for prenatals, and what blood tests would be run (blood group, rhesus factor, anti-blood group antibodies, Rubella antibodies, Toxoplasma and HIV). Then she did an internal exam and checked my cervix and did a pap smear. Next was a breast exam. THEN the best bit, an internal ultrasound to date the pregnancy and see the heartbeat!

Lastly we discussed the NT scan for genetic abnormalities. She wanted me to think it over and decide by the next appt if I wanted it. This was bc that appt would have to be scheduled at that second appt (that scan is done between 11+1 to 13+3 if I remember right). I initially said no. and then changed my mind, I was glad I did it.

ETA: I wrote pap swear, lol.

My first appointment with my PCM was just for a referral to an OB. That was around 5 1/2 weeks. I got my referral and had an ultrasound at 10 weeks. I also filled out my health history and signed a bunch of papers then met with a nurse to go over my paperwork then she scheduled my first appointment with a midwife. I also had a tonnnn of blood drawn that day, like 7 tubes so be prepared for that.

I know my experience is different than most because I have to deal with military doctors and their way of doing things but the paperwork/bloodwork part is pretty standard across the board.

If you haven't already, I'd suggest getting some OTC prenatals or at least make sure you're taking plenty of folic acid. My prenatals have 1000 mg's so on days I can't stomach those I take a gummy vitamin along with extra folic acid. Folic acid is important this early on.

YAY

I had my first appointments at 11 weeks. For me they ask a lot of family health questions, weigh you, have you pee in a cup, check blood pressure, check you internally and do a swab, and give you a slip for bloodwork. I had an ultrasound at my first appointment with Rylie and because I was so far along they listened to the heartbeat with a doppler for both girls

YAH!!!!
Ours took like an hour and a half because I was so excited. They make your pee in a cup (everytime), took my bp, and weight....then I had my u/s first, so we got some pics and got to SEE the heartbeat. It was great!!!
Then we had an appt with the midwife (you have to see the mw before the ob). She went through the 5 pages of paperwork I had to fill out. She gave us a free sample of formula w/ bottles in there, free prenatal vitamins, and free DHA vitamins, oh and free metamusal. I also got a pamplet about different things during the pregnancy and the hospital form I need to fill out and return around 28 weeks. I also got a free mommy and baby magazine. I really enjoyed this appt. Ask any and all questions you will have, write them down as you think fo them too because with pregnancy brain, you are bound to forget something!

I had mine right at 8 weeks. They made me take a pregnancy test, came in and said "Yup you're pregnant" Handed me a "What To Expect When You're Expecting" book and then asked me a crap ton of questions...most of which I didn't know the answer too haha. That was about it. I can't remember if it was that appointment or the 2nd one that they drew like 8 vials of blood from me. One of the two. All in all, pretty generic stuff, nothing too exciting until the second appointment for me

Well my first appt was a mass appt at 7 weeks (there were about 20 other preggos). They made us watch a bunch of vidoes of preg nutrition and such. Then a nurse interviewed us on family/personal health history. From there they told us when to schedule our next real appt.

The first appt with a Dr, I was 10 weeks. She did a normal physical exam, pap, and an internal u/s. I was able to see the baby and the heart beating.

Not all Drs will do an internal u/s at the first appt though. Especially if you are going in at 7 weeks, they might just take urine and do a pap...then tell you to come back at 12-14 weeks, by then they can hear the HB on the doppler. Just don't want you to get too excited thinking you are going to get an u/s. In my DDC, it seemed like half of us did, half didnt.

I got to a midwife, so mine might be a little different.

First appointment....be prepared to sit for a while and answer 500 million health history questions. They will also weigh you and have you pee in a cup to check that everything is good (sugar, protein, etc.). I haven't peed in a cup since my first appointment at 9 weeks.

Then you see the ob/midwife and they discuss how you are feeling, go over lots of paperwork. If you haven't had a pap in a year they will do one, but mostly they will just feel your uterus for size (externally unless they are already in there - they might not even do an internal exam). I didn't have an internal done at my 9 week appointment, but I *did* have one when I went to my first appointment for the baby I miscarried (needed a pap). My midwife also explained what to expect at future visits and everything.

And bloodwork! They will draw about 15 vials of blood - so pack a snack or something to eat afterward so you don't feel woozy...they take a ton of blood!

And if he can go - I strongly recommend bringing your DH with you. It is SUCH information overload, it was great for me to be able to ask my DH if he remember such and such rather than have to call every 5 minutes when I have a question. And if you have any questions already, be sure to write them down. I never remember mine and my DH is always having to ask them (he goes to all of my appointments with me, his choosing).

Yay! At my first appointment (8 wks) they did a pap test, examined me, and talked about all the do's and don'ts. They also went over our family history. After all that I was sent for blood work. I remember how excited I was for my first appointment because it made it all feel more real.

Hmmm...I visited the birthing center when I was around 4 weeks and I think they did the urine test and asked load of questions on the families' medical history and estimated the due date based on my LMP. My appointment with the OBGYN was at 9 weeks and they did another urine test (I'd taken another HPT that day as well ), took my blood pressure, asked about the families' medical histories, estimated my due date and then performed the scan. Both the doc and the midwives also talked to me about healthy eating practices and common DOs and DONT's.

It is a very nervous and exciting appointment.

Call and ask them! Every place is different. I saw a nurse and got my blood drawn, got a bunch of vitamins and a baby packet my first appt. My second appt I got an internal and an ultrasound.

Yay! I think it's a girl!

I agree.. I would call and ask..

It was different with both of my kids.. With my DD, the nurse just talked to me, with my DS they wanted to do an exam.. I even went to the same OB office, just each doctor does it differently..

Good luck and Congrats!

I actually had my 1st appt at a little less than 5 weeks to get my blood taken to confirm that I was indeed pregnant (they dont confirm by pee) and that it was a viable one (betas had to be over a certain amount). They also gave me a bag with a lot of magazines and different prenatals to try.

Then I went in again a 6w4d in order to get an internal u/s after they confirmed it. They took about 8 tubes of blood. Told me what to expect. How far along I was. When my appts will be. How many u/s I will get. Gave me prenatal subscription. Took my b/p. Checked my weight. Told me about eating while pregnant. Asked me about any questions. I think that was it. It was a good hour long session.

YAY I'm so happy for you!

Mine was at 8 weeks. They had me pee in a cup (which they do EVERY time, so don't ever pee right before your appointment). Did the normal blood pressure and weight checks. She asked me a few family history questions and if I had a cat to find out what kind of blood tests to include. Then DH came in and she got out the cooter cam and there was baby! We were able to hear the heartbeat at that point (though you might not be able to, so don't freak out if you can't). Some docs won't even do the u/s until later because they don't want to scare you if they don't find anything (it is just so early). I then went through my list of questions... write them all down! I saw my appointment as more of an interview of the doc since I didn't have a regular OB and I wanted to make sure she would be supportive of things I want during the pregnancy and at the birth. Then they carted me off to take a bunch of blood. That was about it. I've seen her every four weeks since. They say they can last a long time, like 1 hour or more, but I think mine was a little faster because I had just met with an OB about infertility, and she had my records for that, so no pap smear or anything like that.

One thing to think about is each doc is different on what tests he or she might offer or even tell you about. My doc didn't even mention the NT scan. You might want to research the different tests to see which ones you will want and which ones you don't so you can ask about them in case your doc doesn't mention it.

Oh! And another thing... my doc suggested I get the H1N1 vaccine, but advised me NOT to get it before 13 weeks. I say that because a lot of the girls in my DDC said they got it well before 13 weeks at their doc's suggestion, so doctors seem to have differing opinions on when to get it. Just something to think about. I personally haven't gotten it and don't really plan on it, but it is a personal decision!

Anyway... sorry I wrote a book!

You know, I pee every time BEFORE I go to my doc appt and when I get there I always get mad at myself for doing that! so they only get like an 8th of pee lol.
