He is still sick!!!! He is so bloated he looks like a pregnant cow!!! He is eating though, and drinking, but doesn't have as much energy as he usually does!!! I called my vet the day after christmas and told him what was going on, and on Monday he started him on 3 different kids of meds!!! Penicillin, dexamethasone, and cipro( I really have no idea what these are for). He started to feel better, and had explosive diarrhea twice all over my floor!! He hasn't pooped now for 3 days, I dont' think(although I don't follow him around outside). The Dr said to give him 2 tablespoons of milk magnesia to help with the constipation!!! I gave him 2 tablespoons 5 hours ago and he still hasn't gone!!! So I just gave him another tablespoon 20 mins ago(lots of it ran out of his mouth both time) and some pumpkin so he could have more fiber!!! I don't know what to do now!!! I am leaving to go see my family tomorrow for 10 days and he is being boarded. Granted he is being boarded at a vet, I am still so worried!!! I talk to my vet daily but he is out of town and hasn't been able to look at him!!! I feel like staying home for a couple extra days to make sure he gets better!!! The vet said I made it worse because when he would eat I would force him to eat so much he mad him even more bloated!!!

Anyways, I dont' really even know why I posted this....I am just so sad........

So as I mentioned I took him to the vet to be boarded on thusday afternoon!! The girl at the front desk sadi she would have the vet look at him that night!! I was expecting a phone call, but never got one!! I sat hear and worried all weekend long. This morning I called them to see how he was doing!! The girl said that she couldn't read the DR's writting but it said something about hydration and a shot. She didn't know anymore. I asked her to go find the vet and ask him!! She called me back like 2 mind later and said that she was reading the wrong chart and told me about a different dog!!! She then said that poor Charlie was in pain and wouldn't stop whinnng. He had lose stools. but was eating a little!! The DR was going to do full bloodwork and the results of that should be in later this afternoon. HE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING OVER THE WEEKEND!!! My poor gog suffered in a kennel all weekend being in pain and knowbody did a freaking thing for him!!! I am so pissed, I wish my vet was in town so he could have gone to see him!!! I just got off the phone and cried...theres nothing I can do, I can't even snuggle him to make him feel comfortable. It is NOT going to be ok if my dog dies!!!

The penicillin and ciprofloxacin are antibiotics and the dexamethasone is a steroid. Basically the antibiotics are to make sure your dog doesn't get a bacterial infection from the severe constipation and the steroid is an anti-inflammatory as sometimes the body can generate an inflammatory response as it fights off and kills the bacteria.

The pumpkin and milk of magnesia are both good options, has the vet talked about possibly doing an enema or using glycerin suppositories? You can pick up glycerin suppositories at any pharmacy and they generally work within ten minutes.

Hugs!

He is up to date with his shots?

A few things cause diarrhea -- Parvo, Giardia or other fecal parasites.

A few things cause constipation -- diet, twisted bowel (very serious).

A few things cause bloating of the stomach - fecal parasites, twisted bowel, too much gas, stomach ulcer, etc.

Please take him to an emergency vet before you board him if he is not getting better

so glad he pooped!!!

have you ever thought of feeding raw food to your dog? my dog suffered from constant reflux and throwing up (like all day long, and frothing at the mouth and wretching), and switching her to raw food solved all her medical problems. no more forcing expensive doggy tums down her throat and forcing her to eat 3 grains of kibble. she LOVES raw food, like freaks out for it, but barely even notices kibble (if we go to my moms she sniffs it then just meanders away). anywhoo, i feel that it is a great option for overall health & reducing vet bills. i mean dogs didnt eat kibble since the dawn of time, they made it this far on real food, so it makes sense to me that it is beneficial to feed them it. annnnnyways, so you can usually find a raw option in the smaller pet stores in a big freezer (as in not petsmart), and you have to feed them a lot less bc it is all absorbed, they then poop & pee less and need to drink less water. at least thats what i've seen in my dogs case chile also has liver disease so since its all organic and whatnot theres a lot less toxins, which i feel good about. well thats food for thought!

woohooo! I'm glad he pooped. The diarrhea could have actually been caused by the antibiotics he was on. Poor puppy. What kind of dog do you have?

I see SO many dogs come in with issues with the raw food diet :-(

really?? wow seriously it has been the best thing ever for little chile. she's such a healthy dog. her kidney blood work even improved over the last year. i feed her a good quality flash frozen organic raw food though. i dont like buy 16 raw chicken necks and keep them in the fridge or anything, which probably helps with bacterial issues. i thaw it out for each meal which is twice a day, i started when she was probably 6 months old, and she's 4 yrs old now. i know some raw food ppl will feed like quasi questionable raw meat to their dogs, but i would never do that

Poor baby! I'm glad he is feeling better, you must have been worried sick. At least you can leave town now with a peace of mind and not have to worry about him too much.

So after all the poop excitement he threw up everywhere!!! I called the place that was boarding him and asked them to have the vet look at him!!! The vet was supposed to look at him last night, I never got a phone call though!!! At this point I don't care how much it costs, I just want him to feel better!!!! I'm not sure who asked but he is a pure bred black lab!!!! He's the sweetest most amazing dog!!!

hmmmm... I'd think volvulous, but I think onset of symptoms would be more dramatic. Maybe he has a bowel obstruction? Praying for your baby dog.
