Since my Charlie bear died, me bassett hound gunner is miserable!!! He won't eat, won't go outside, sleeps and mopes around all day!!! He was generally an outside dog when Charlie was still alive!! He hates being outside now, so we leave him inside!! He has started sleeping on the couch, eating cat food, eating cat crap out of the litter box, trying to get food off the counters, and there is nothing we can do about it because we are at work!!! Gunner loves having the companionship of another dog, loves playing, and snuggling. He is just so lost!! I think it is a good idea to get another dog. They can play outside together, they can snuggle, and it can help take Gunners mind off being so sad!! Gunner just whines all day, and wonders the house, it is so sad!! DH is dead set against another dog though, he sadi it hurt to much when Charlie died!! I get that, but I also don't think it is fair to punish gunner because we never want to be sad again!! What would you do???

I would definitely try to push for another dog. It sounds like Gunner is miserable We had a cat that lived to be 23 years old (Siamese) and it died when I was 8 or 9. I was sooo sad but you can move on and love other pets. I understand your DH's heart ache though. My mom never got another dog after our Jack Russels (Darcy and Lady-obviously from Pride and Prejudice LoL) passed away.

I agree, keep trying to push the idea of getting another dog. Poor pooch! Are there any dog friends he can interact with, like at your parents' home or friends' home? Maybe if he sees how he perks up with another dog around, it may change his mind. I watch Marley and Me and I just bawl through the whole movie ebcause I cant imagine losing my puppy....but one day, it will unfortunately happen. Its just a fact of life, but we move on.

Morgan, I'm so sorry to hear your dog passed away. I would definitely try to convince him to get another dog as well. I think Gunner needs that companionship. He needs a new buddy to take his mind off of Charlie. I think it would be good for you guys too.

Maybe give Gunner and your husband a little more time to adjust to losing Charlie? It's still new and there is an adjustment period. Do you and your husband want another dog in the future anyways? If you both do then maybe it would be okay to start looking now.

Another thing to think about is if you want another dog while pregnant and having a newborn.

I would rescue another doggie. You could bring Gunner along to the shelter and see how the interact with each other and if Gunner perks up any.

It might be too soon for your DH though, it's tough. When my kitty passed away, I was so lonely I rescued another one just a few days later and it really helped me heal.

Poor doggie. I would get another dog too. As a child my DH had some small type of dog that stopped being active and was on the decline. He even got sick and the vet said the dog didn't have long. Then they got a rottie, and the little dog perked right up after gaining a playmate, and lived for 5 more years.

Maybe tell your DH that Gunner being alone could affect his health? I dunno. I hope he perks up soon.

I have lived through the loss of two dogs and one that I grew up with, Seneca (we got her in 1997, I believe?) isn't doing very right now and... we don't have high hopes. It hurts sooo much to lose someone you love but the love and devotion you get get and give throughout a pets life has always been enough to get my through it. I think getting another dog and giving another animal that time and love, I think they deserve that and Gunner deserves a buddy (IMO).

I would get another dog. We got Sadie because health wise Cooper isn't doing well and Scout is miserable without another dog in the house. I hope Cooper is with us for a long while but I'm happy to know that when it's his time Sadie will be there to help Scout cope with the loss. Dogs mourn just as people do. Gunner probably has no idea what's going on, just that his companion is not around anymore.

I would get another dog so Gunner has a buddy. We lost one of our cats about a year ago and Dh wouldn't let me get another one. I still wish we had b/c I think our cat misses having another kitty around. She's so needy of me more than she used to be.
