I am SOOOO livid with his ped this morning.
Backstory: J.J has had this cough/congestion since he was 3 weeks old that comes and goes. It always goes away when hes on antibiotics though (go figure...) J.J had an ear infection in December, we did amoxicillin and the infection cleared up and his cough/congestion went away until he came off the amoxi, the cough and congestion came back. So now hes coughing till the end of January.
So, he had another ear infection in January (No surprise). We moved to a stronger antibiotic - Omnicef. He was on that for 10 days, we go back for our recheck and she says his ear is only 90% better. She wants to see him back in 2 weeks again. As for his cough/congestion she has no idea although again, it was gone when he was on antibiotics.
Within 2 days his cough got horrible, he was wheezing and gasping for air. So she prescribe levoalbuterol (6 treatments) and a nebulizer. She also took him off his similac advanced and put him on soy. Magically on the soy, his congestion is gone and most of his cough, too. (Dairy allergy???)
We saw her again this past Friday and she said his ear was the worst she had ever seen it and it was just filled with nasty fluid and he had a full blow infection. I demanded antibiotics and she said no. She wanted to wait until his recheck on Tuesday to see how things go over the weekend.
So what happens at 1am? My child wakes up screaming bloody murder and his ear is dripping wet. Guess who's ear drum ruptured cause of all the pressure?
I made DH wake her arse up at 5:30 this morning and she called in a prescription to the 24 hour CVS near us. Now, hes on the strongest antibiotics you can give an infant -- Augmentin Extra Strength. He's also to get Motrin twice per day.
Not to mention, he JUST cut a tooth 4 days ago. He must be in so much pain
We are seeing a pediatric chiropractor tonight to help with the fluid in his ears (which is no longer there.....) and calling an ear nose throat specialist as well.
Needless to say, I am also looking for a new ped.

ohhhhh nooo! I hope JJ gets relief soon. that has to be frustrating. had the ped just gave him the prescription from the get go since it was the worst that she'd seen his ear and there is nothing that wouldve made it get better between then and his next appt, he wouldnt have been in so much pain.

I would be filing a malpractice suit. Ask for your file from the ped right away and then contact an attorney. No one should EVER let a poor baby suffer like that! I hope he feels much better very soon! Will this have any permanent effect on his hearing?

Poor J.J. I hope he feels better soon and you find a great pedi and ENT.
It does sounds like with the cough/congestion that he could have a milk protein allergy. Also I know you have said before he couldn't tolerate your BM, if you eat dairy it could have been from the milk protein.

Shan -- That's what I was thinking. He could NEVER tolerate my milk. He was SUCH a Mr. grumpy pants! I am wondering if he needs to be on Hypoallergenic formula. (Not that I want him on that.. or soy.. Soy is bad for boys and the hypoallergenic stuff is basically sugar) *sigh*. Definitely my child.
Sara -- Trust me I would sue if I could. But keep in mind, my ped is very conservative (No meds unless necessary, delay vaxs, no OTC pain relievers). She rather take the wait and see approach. Although when it comes to ear issues, with DH and my history, I've already told her I don't wanna take the wait and see approach with ears. DH had a lot of speech and social problems when he was younger because of hearing difficulties from multiple chronic ear infections, and I had problems with my hearing until first grade as well (and to this day i can not swim without ear plugs). His hearing we are HOPING will be ok -- He's already failed 2 hearing tests in his left ear in the last month.

Popping over .. Hello Sam it's me Aaron Nicole
I am deaf.. My mom told me I had SO many ear infections as a baby and she often took me to the doctor. I had spinal meningitis and became profoundly deaf on Valentine's day 1982. Keep a CLOSE eyes on his ears. Get an ENT doc and get his ears checked out. I still to this day have reoccurrent ear infections. It sucks!
Hang in there...

I knew you were deaf -- I never knew the cause though. See, this is why I worry!
And I am SO horrible at sign language, I could not imagine trying to learn to another language lol.

How awful!!! I hope you get this resolved soon.
I'm not sure if this will help or if this is an option for you but you could look in to goat's milk formula as well. I have not researched this and I don't know if it's a viable option for a child under 1 year old but I recently switched Amara to goat's milk because of her allergic reaction to cow's milk and it's be working wonderfully. From what I've read you don't get the congestion or mucous build up with it as you get with cow's milk. It is low in folate though so there's the need to supplement.
Just thought I'd add that option to your research pile.
I hope JJ gets better really soon. I can't imagine how scary this whole situation must be.
