I posted this in my PR but I'm curious about you guys' situations too and would like your thoughts as well!
What does your baby call your parents & your ILs? Did they decide or you or their other grandchildren named them? Are you okay with what they're called?
------
My parents are grandma & grandpa. My niece is about to turn 18 so they've been this for a long time so I expected Lily to call them that. My 7 year old nephew calls my mom GG though. He named her this after he wouldn't stop calling her GrandPA as a toddler
This is the first grandbaby for my ILs so I wasn't sure what to expect. My FIL said last night she can call him by his first name, Ray. Ohhhkayyyy. He said that's what I call him so that's what she can call him too. I was like 'alright, but you know, I'm not going to call you grandpa, cause you're not my grandpa. " He said he wouldn't want to be called grandpa... she could call him grand-dad but otherwise Ray is fine. Secretly I enjoy this because I don't care for my FIL and I think her calling him by his first name is like... I don't know how to word it... not very loving? kind of impersonal? like he doesn't mean more to her? I don't know. Then MIL on the other hand, has referred to herself on facebook as 'grama' pronounced like grandma. This bothers me because she already HAS a grandma - MY mom. And you know, if you're going to pronounce it the same then you should spell it correctly, IMO. I am not going to re-name her... but I still think since this is her first grandchild she should pick a different name to go by so there's no confusion for Lily. Because I will always have to say "Grandma Bonnie" or whatever. I guess other people have this problem - but for me I had grandma & granny so I was never wondering which one we were talking about. And both of Lily's grandmothers live right here in town so its not like she'll never see one of them or something. Whatever.
and then my granny, who is 96... I figured Lily could just call her Granny since everyone else does. But then I was reading Rachel (one of the admin here on JM)'s blog and they called their great grandmother 'Great' and I think that is ADORABLE so I asked her tonight if that would be okay. I think its super cute.
So what will your kids be calling their grandparents? Anyone agree with me that the 'Ray' thing is weird? I'm just being a PITA about the 'grama' scenario right? I think I probably am, so I won't say anything... but it does kind of annoy me a little bit.

I just have my mom ( my dad passed away a long time ago ) and Cambria calls her MaaMaw ( Grandma but thats how she says it ). On DH's side is his mom and dad and she calls her the same thing and doesn't really say anything about FIL. He very much sticks to him self. He's Over weight and sick so he just sit's in a chair all day and talks to people every once in a while. I hate it since I was close to my grandpa but Cambria wont be.

Leo has 4 sets of grandparents and 3 full sets of great grandparents + 3 great grandmothers and one great great grandfather.
My mom & dad are Nana & Papa (named by my oldest nephew). FIL and SMIL are Nanny and Papa (named by my oldest niece). My dad and step mom have never even met Leo and are referred to as Grandma & Grandpa K. MIL and SFIL are Grandma Owns and Grandpa Tom. Great grandparents are just that, except SMIL introduced her parents to Leo as GrandNanny and GrandPapa. As for his great great grandfather...Leo will be meeting him sometime around a month from now and I'm not really sure that he will need to develop a name for him. He's in pretty good health, but will be 100 this November.
As for what I grew up with, my grandparents (and step grandparents) were just Grandma & Grandpa last name/first name. Great grandparents were Great Grandma and Great Grandpa last name/first name. I never got too confused.

grandma rabenberg and grandma small, great-grandma Betty, great-grandma Dorothy with be them.
so grandparents get last names, great grandparents get first name.
But I have to admit I about kill DH's dad when he said---oh so I get to be just grandpa since I'm the only one. The look I gave him when he said it got my point out loud and clear with out me talking-------looks like that mad mom face did come with the baby! LOL

Omg, Amy you make me feel SO much better lol. Curtis calls my MIL Mama and I always feel kinda bad. He means Grandma but that's how it comes out... but like when we are in a store and he's calling her that it makes me think others must think he's confused and calls her mom cause I'm not an active part in his life or something (I'm nuts I know!!). Anyways.
He calls them grandma (Mama) and Grandpa (Gapa). He means grandma and grandpa though. Some times he calls grandpa Big Truck Gapa since he's a truck driver. If he's talking about MY parents it's racecar Mama and racecar Gapa lol. My dad drag races and he did some races while visiting us, which made a HUGE impact on Curtis of course! We don't talk or see them much so it's not really a mouth full since it's not said alot lol.

My mum and dad are Nana and Gandad
Garys parents are Mam-maw and Ganddad
Garys Grandma is still alive and Gary thinks Mia should call her GreatGrandma but i think thats too much to call someone and it confuses her. Shes been a lot less confused when we refer to hear as just grandma so thats what shes called. Grandma

My mom already told me she wants to be Nana. So my parents will be Nana and Poppa. FMIL and FFIL will probably just be grandma and grandpa. Although since my Nana is likely still going to be around, I don't know what my kids will call her... probably greatnana... something like that, I don't know.
Growing up I had:
- my dad's mom and stepdad were Nana & Grandpa (although we said it more like grampa)
- my mom's parents were Momma & Poppa
- my mom's first stepmom (momma died when I was almost 1) was Grandma
- my mom's second stepmom (Grandma died when I was about 4 or so) is just Sandi. lol we ran out of names by then I think and I was 6 or 7 when they got married so now it's Poppa & Sandi she doesn't mind. my sis was close to 13 when they got married so i'm sure she gets that she's not grandma for us.
if my Poppa is still around when I have kids he will be Great Grandpa, that's when my cousins' kids call him, so i figure that works. although he's not doing so well these days so I'm not sure if he'll still be around when I have kids
my guess is my kids will have Grandma, Grandpa, Great Grandma (DF's Grandma), Nana, Poppa, Greatnana and Sandi or maybe Grammie for Sandi, we'll decide on that later

My parents are Grandmom and Granddad. My inlaws are Grandma and Pappy. Boths sets of parents decided themselves. I don't know my dad's mom, I wasn't allowed to be around her growing up but we referred to her as Grandma K. My mom's mom is Bucket My oldest sister refused to say grandma but kept saying Bucket. It just stuck over 40 years later LoL! I call her G-ma or Gram sometimes when we're out because we tent to get crazy looks haha!
I think the Ray thing is DEFINITELY weird. It makes it seem like he doesn't want to be a grandfather in my opinion.

My parents are Oma and Opa (German for Grandma and Grandpa) and my FIL is Grandpa Bill.
Growing up my dad's parents were Oma and Opa for me, and my mom's mom was Grammy Kit and my strep grandfather was Grandpa Donald. My real Grandfather was just Alan cause I only met him like twice.

My mom is Grammie and I guess my dad is just Grandpa... MIL is Grama (she spells it that way too), but she also tends to write Gma and Gpa on cards and such... I have no idea. I guess FIL is also just Grandpa? We haven't discussed Grandpa's, so I have no clue how that will play out once Xander is talking.

When Hannah was born we called my mom grandma and my mil grammy, but now that she is talking she calls them both grammy. When I am talking about my mom I still say grandma so she knows who I am talking about.
And the Ray thing is weird...just my opinion

My MIL wants Amara to call her Grandma and I guess it will be Grandad for my FIL though he approaches Amara and says dada and it annoys me because Amara calls DH dada. My mom is Granny to all my nieces and nephews and my dad is Grandaddy to them so it'll be the same. We call my great grandmom (the only living grandparent on my side) Mama so Amara will call her that too. Right now Amara just calls everyone mama/nana or dada but when I refer to them with her I use what she will call them.

my parents will probably be Grandma and Grandpa. His parents... I don't know what he used for his grandparents, but if it were up to me it would be Grandma L. and Owen, and then Grandpa T. for Andrew's dad.
And my aunt will be Aunt Grandma Does anyone else use that one? I grew up calling all my grandma's sister's Aunt _____, except for the one that I was closest to, who we called Aunt Grandma. My cousin's children already call my mom Aunt Grandma, so I can't wait for my children to use it too

My mom told me she wanted baby to call her Honey... I had to veto that one, that is just way weird to me and reminds me of DH's mom who has her grandbabies call her Dear. I just think it is weird for a grandchild to use a term of endearment for the grandparent that I would see the grandparent using for the grandchild, but that's just me. We haven't spoken to DH's mom since we got married, so I don't think Dear will be in use either.
Anyway, I know my grandparents were named by my older brother, mema and pepa... because that's just what he could pronounce. So while I'm sure my parents might say what they want to be called, it might be up to baby!
That being said, the only one I know what we will call is my step mom... DH named her "mama J" (her name is Janice) well before we were pregnant and it stuck, so that will probably be her name. Baby will probably name everyone else.
And I think the Ray thing is kinda strange... but hey, if that's what he wants, right?

Nolan will have one Grandma (my MIL) and one Grandpa (my dad).
I told my MIL that she could pick whatever she wants to be called and then we figured Nolan would probably name her something, so she is just "Grandma" for now.
My dad is totally in denial that he is going to be a Grandpa (still) and he is only turning 45 this year so he is SUPER in denial that he will be one. He offers suggestions of "mack daddy" and "super homey G". Yeah.
Then Nolan has Granny (DH's Grandma), and my Grandparents are Grammy/Gram & Gramps. So it works out well that we shouldn't have any overlap, unless someone wants to lay claim to "super homey G" too.

My parents are Grammy and Grandpa, Lee's parent's are Grandma and Grandpa, and my grandparents (the only surviving set) are Nana and Papa. The girls also have an adopted grandma (my best friend/Violet's god-mother's mom) and they call her Gigi.
I totally get what you mean about the Ray thing, I refer to my mom as Marcia.

My neices and nephews calls my mom and dad: Grandma (her 1st name) and Grandpa (his 1st name).
They have multiple grandparents. Wills parents are deceased but Lani will probably call my folks the same as my nieces and nephews.

The Ray thing is weird but from everything you've told us in the past I'm not surprised. He should want Lily to call him something along the lines of grandpa. As far as the grandma thing goes I think it's up to each Grandma and
lily what they are called. I can understand your feelings about not wanting two with the same name but I think you'll just have to wait and see when
Lily starts talking.
My mom calls herself Grandma and I'm not that big on it but it was her choice. I hoped for Oma/Omie because I called her mom that. It's German. She wasn't feeling it. Oliver still might come up with his own name for her. Damon's mom is MeMe or MiMi. I think she came up with it and that is what her other grandchildren call her. I called my other grandma Granny but that was what everyone called her. I was never close to her and didn't see her much. I never felt comfortable or liked the name Granny because I didn't have a conection/closeness.
Opa is my grandfather on my mom's side and it's german. Oliver will call him the same. I've always been close to him. My other grandfather passed away years ago and he was Pappy but again I was never close and didn't feel comfortable calling him that.
