So Matthew will pick up cheerios and puffs but he doesn't want to pick up (or can't pick up, I don't know which) anything soft like fruits or veggies. He just smears it around a bit. Today he actually tried to put his mouth on the tray to eat a piece of fruit rather than pick it up!

I decided to try him with a spoon and see how that would go. Pretty good as long as I load up the spoon for him! Anyone else have a baby who wasn't into finger foods and went straight to spoon eating? I'm wondering wether to keep trying to get him to pick things up or work on spoon eating.

Here's video I took. YouTube - Matthew feeds himself with a spoon (with help from Mommy)

He's more mellow than usual in the video, I swear he gets this bored look on his face the minute he goes in his high chair. It's like he doesn't want to stay still. The other day he was cruising along the couch and he kept coming over to me for bites of a banana, it was cute!

Oh and another food question...is it normal at his age to still gag on meats? I gave him turkey the other day and the bits were TINY and he still didn't swallow them. He chewed it around in his mouth but then all the tiny bits just came out his mouth later.

I can't watch videos on my sucky connection so I haven't seen it. But with the spoon/hand feeding. Why not work on both? Kirsty uses baby stainless steel cutlery now and she knows how to load her fork but she hasn't quite mastered it. She will happily sit for agessss trying to get food on her fork, it's so sweet! Then she'll hold the fork up to me and say "ta". That's her way of asking for her fork to me loaded. I would say she is 50/50 with hand/spoon or fork now.

Awesome with the spoon! I love that he doesn't looks like he doesn't care. Gosh, babies are so different! Henry ATTACKS his food.

What brand are those spoons? I can't find such deep ones that are all plastic.

I don't know about the meat thing. DS doesn't seem to have any issues but I don't know what's "normal."

Good job Matthew! hehe. He does that very well.

He can practice the pincer grasp with toys and other objects as well so no worries there.

And sometimes Curtis gags on meats I think it's just a tough texture ya know? They will get used to it

Great job Matthew! Gemma still gags on meats and takes FOREVER to chew them up and swallow them! And Gemma was a spoon baby! She wouldn't even touch her first birthday cake until I gave her a fork to use! Let me see if I can find a pic for you!

I don't know why this is so small but here is Gem and her fork with her cake!

They are Tommee Tippee spoons. Tommee Tippee 8-Pack Explora Feeding Spoons - 9m+ - Tommee Tippee - Babies "R" Us I like them, they are good for him to use. I use another brand when I'm feeding him that are longer handled.

Yup, it was peaches! He likes fruits better than veggies. Maybe my fault as I did more fruits first? Hmm.
