Okay, so Guy really really wants to cloth diaper at least for the first few months, because I'll be at home, probably until January and the baby is due in August. I will be the one home with the baby up until the baby goes to day care and thus want something easy. What are the best options for a newborn? I don't know where to start. Is it even worth it to cloth diaper for a only a few months? After that, she will be in daycare and we'll have to use disposables, during the day for sure. If it would potentially be cheaper in the long run we would like to still cloth diaper at home. Not sure if its worth it.

They have newborn trial kits that you can get if you want to try. It's $10, you use it for a month and the ones you like u keep (they'll charge you for it, but you'll know the cost ahead of time) and the ones you dont, just send back.
Jillian Drawers Trial kit

I plan to only CD part-time (I have enough for f/t tho).

for newborns, the best CD that I've heard is kissluv size 0. I have thirsties and prefolds and also a few fitted dipes.

First I want to point out if your doing day care----many places are starting to allow it! They prefer AIO or prestuffed pockets I'm told!

MomsMilkBoutique.com: FREE SHIPPING on Cloth Diapers, Cloth Diaper Covers, Baby Carriers & Nursing Bras! Has a great program for trail fluff also (I love their organic fluff trail package!)

Prefolds would be cheapest to buy, and if you keep them in good condition, you can resale them! Then, if you're daycare will take CD, you could invest in some pockets. My kissaluvs lost their softness after two washes, and we could never get them soft again:-(

I'm using Green Mountain Diapers Prefolds and fitteds from Green Mountain Diapers: Cloth diapers and diaper covers for baby. They have a great info sheet on there with suggestions for a small/cheap stash, medium stash and all out expensive but convenient stash.

I have about 2 dozen newborn prefolds and 3 dozen small prefolds now. I have about a dozen fitteds between the GMD's and kissaluv size 0's. I have about 10 pocket diapers, mostly Blueberrys from Swaddlebees - Premier Diaper Collection. I have about 15 covers, mostly Thirsties, Imse Vimse and Blueberry. I have doublers from Bum Wrap from Bum Wrap-The Place To Lower Diapering Costs.. The pocket diapers came with inserts (some with TWO!) but I also got some zorb inserts from Angela. To top off my collection I got cloth wipes from FuzziBunz and Planetwise. I also got my wetbag from Planetwise at Planet Wise. HTH!

Oh and don't forget snappis or diaper pins! I have 5 snappis but you really don't need that many. I just know that I will sit one down and not find it until after the dog gets it and shreds it!

Green mountain diapers orange edge prefolds are the best for newborns. For teeny tiny babies, the Bummis super bright covers are great (they are tiny). Get a couple of snappis and you are good to go! We also used the nanipoos fitted diapers I sent Morgan, Kissaluvs size 0 fitteds (they do get rough quick), Little Lions fitted diapers, swaddlebees newborn velour fitteds (they stay soft), & a blueberry mini pocket diaper --> love love LOVE it! Other covers that are nice are the new thirsties duo, anything wool, prowrap cover (the larger prowrap covers suck), and imse vimse organic cotton is quite nice too.

I hear from most moms that they prefer a prefold and cover. I think it's also the cheapest way to go! I think the previous moms gave some great advice. I'd love to try atleast a few but I don't think I can get hubby on board haha. Maybe I should show him some youtube videos

Anyone have any handy?? I'm thinking Rachel could benefit too, if your interested in that system.

We are doing an AIO for new baby and then he/she will go into a one size cloth diaper with Dustin. That way I don't have to worry about having separate stashes and it keeps it simple for everyone involved.

To me it was cheapest and easy to use prefolds with covers in the first few months. They are easy. You just fold, set them in the cover, lay baby on diaper and velcor it on. It would be worth it to go that route to save money. You could do with about 2-3 dozen and 6-8 covers.

Some daycare centers are open to cloth diapers if you get the All In Ones that are just like disposables. They would just have to throw them in a wet bag for you. It's worth asking about if you would want to continue CD'ing.

When my husband stayed home with Oliver he always grabbed the prefolds and covers most of the time. He said he had no problem with them at all. He thought they were easy. We didn't use a snappi either. I think you should get a few prefolds with one cover to try out! It's cheap and you both might like it.

Oh and I never got the newborn sized prefold.. I got the small size and it worked with him from a newborn to about 4-5 months old.

Video of a JM member (Niamh) putting a PF on her son, Seamus. There is no winky so it's a good video for seeing just how easy PF's are!

Okay that looks not very simple to me Hahaha. I can't imagine doing that with two other boys getting into trouble. Oh and that little boy is actually the same age as Curtis now hehe, they were in the same DDC, PR

Resi, do you just fold it then lay it in the cover and then do the cover up, I can see that being easier, more an AI2 style.

These are the ones I'm thinking of going with for the first couple months

I think hubby wants to grab one item and put it on, and not have to worry about parts ya know? Hmm... I'll have to talk to him and see

Niamh did it in two parts but you can have the PF already inside the cover and then just do it all up instead of putting on the PF, snappi-ing it and then reaching for a cover. A lot of moms don't even use the snappis but I think I would be afraid of the diaper moving and pee getting everywhere without them!

Am I the only one that HATED prefolds?! They never fit Xander fight and they'd get sooooo wet after he peed! I'll take my Bum Genius any day! They stay dry to the touch when he pees and they're soooooo easy to put on! However, I couldn't use them til Xander was 2 months old since he was so tiny (I use the one size).

Wow, that is the easiest looking, least confusing CD I have ever seen! (I guess it helps that it is 3D in a video and not just a picture) is that what all AIO's look like? Do you just wash the whole diaper? Or is the lining/inside removable and you wash that? OMG I think i may be able to do this now! CD was always soooooo confusing to me!

I've never used prefold so I can't share much there. And we only CD part time.

I just wanted to share that I was nervous about starting them as well and that's why I waited until DS was a few months old before I CD. I was overwhelmed with being a new mother, pumping, regular laundry, trying to remember to eat, that I didn't want to worry about yet another thing (CDs and washing them).

Lauren - I stuff a BG or Blueberry pocket with microfiber insert and a prefold, and it is BULLET PROOF for night time leaks! He can pee an insane amount over 12 hours at night and his butt is nice and dry in the AM. I love pocket dipes for that.

Ashley, that's what an AIO is You just put it on baby, then take it off put whatever needs to be put in the toilet and then wash it. No parts or anything like that. The only down side is that they take a while to dry, and it's suggested to hang dry them to keep the PUL (waterproof outter) in good shape.

Whoa! Well, I just got really excited about CD now! For some reason I always thought every CD had multiple pieces!!

So im assuming AIO's are more expensive than the other way? Alot more expensive? To where its not any cheaper to do it rather than disposables?

It's always cheaper to do cloth, even if you get the most expensive brand/system. You buy your stash and use it for years. Instead of paying 100 - or more each month, over and over again for years (or less, depends on what diapers you buy and all that lol. I just say that to make myself feel ultra good!).
