Ok, so if you've noticed by my pictures my camera is around 6/7 years old and completely sucks LoL. My birthday isn't until July (shout out to Seamus ) but I told Andy that's what I want and I want a NICE one. What would you girls recommend? I'm looking for something that won't break the bank horribly (still expecting it to be pricey though) but have it take really nice pics. Thanks

I just got a Nikon P90 for xmas and so far I love it.. I am still learning to use the different settings but it takes great pictures on the auto setting so far Its a higher end point and shoot camera and not a SLR.. We got it for right under $400!
If you want a smaller camera (something to fit in your pocket/purse and doesn't really have a bunch of settings) then I would recommend a casio exilim... That is what we had before and it takes great pictures! I just wanted a fancier camera and thats why I got the Nikon! I think we got that one for under $200 but that was years ago!!!!

Anything Canon. I just got a new one for a little over 100 bucks, and it takes the best pictures! The color is so much better than my old nikon. I got mine at best buy!

My camera is the Nikon Coolpix 12 megapixel (S570). For a point and shoot it does great! And I think it was like $150 but I'm not 100% sure because mine was a replacement of my old one under my warranty so I didn't pay for it.

I used to have a Canon Rebel XTI DSLR (still have it actually, just don't use it that much anymore). I love the camera but it is seriously huge. DSLRs take fantastic pictures but they also monopolize all of your diaper bag space.
Because of that, I wanted to get something smaller. I thought I was going to end up with a point and shoot but I wasn't thrilled with the serious downgrade in picture quality and zoom capability. Side note, don't even bother paying attention to the Digital Zoom numbers, digital zoom sucks and the pictures turn out like crap. You want to get the best Optical Zoom you can afford. I ended up getting a Sony Cybershot DSC-H20 and it is fabulous. The picture quality is on par with my Canon DSLR AND it has a built in HD video camera which actually takes some pretty great videos. We have only ever owned Canons and I told Lee that's all I wanted to buy this time around but this little camera absolutely blew me away. The size is perfect and I take it everywhere, plus it has the video camera so I'm only carrying one device and can easily switch between the two.
Pics:
I was going to post a video for you but my Photobucket is being really stupid. I'll try and update you with one later.

i hate to be the downer, but my nikon was horrible. The color was so off and it broke before I owned it a full year. If you look at my belly pics you can tell the difference between the nikon and the canon by the color. Even though they were the same price. The sales associate didn't even have me look at them. Said he wouldn't use them himself. (unless he was buying a 500 dollar model. HTH

Yup I agree a GREAT starter camera (well starting into photography) is a Canon XTi - years worth of beautiful pictures but it is big and bulky (not NEARLY as bad as my Nikon D90...but mine is more high tech...) It usually runs you anywhere from $300-500 depending on what deals you get....AMAZING pictures....
But if a point n shoot is what your looking for...I do suggest a nikon coolpix. Currently the leading point n shoot with a 12.0 MP (Dude...my Nikon D90 is 12.4!!) You can get them at target for around $125. It has a semi high ISO (how fast you can take picture after picture) of 1600. This is pretty good seeing as most point n shoots go anywhere from 600-1000. With an SD card and case your looking at about $200.

We just got a Nikon D3000 (beginner DSLR) for Christmas and i love it so far...its got an easy to use guide mode (cause I am not technologically advanced and I hate reading on how to use this stuff). It takes really pretty pictures.
Here is a pic of Nora I took with the camera:
It was around $400-500 dollar range I think (but we bought all the extras like a nice carrying case, memory card blah blah blah).

our point & shoot is a canon powershot g9 ... both DH and I love it ... he can do manual settings for all the pics he takes and I can do it on full auto. It also takes great video. PowerShot G9 Digital Camera

Thanks for all your help girls! I think that Sony Cybershot is about what I'm looking for... smaller and right at what I'd be willing to spend. Built in video camera: BONUS!

I would recommend the Casio ExFilm EX-FH 20. We just got that one and love it. Its also a high end point and shoot, but it has many features and you can do almost everything manually if you like. My favorite feature is that it can shoot 40 frames per second, which is great for catching fast moving kids and animals! It's a little pricey at a little over $300, but it takes gorgeous pictures and is easy to use. Casio High Speed EXILIM EX FH20 digital camera by Office Depot
I would stay away from Nikon and Kodak. I have had 2 Nikons and 2 Kodaks (some of the more expensive models), and none of them lasted more than a year... and the cost to fix them was more than the camera was worth. When I was camera hunting, I had several salepeople tell me that Nikon and Kodak are worst for longevity. Canon, Casio and Sony are meant to be the best.
No matter what... invest in the extra warranty they offer in the store!!! I think its usually around $50 for 3 yrs. Its the best thing ever. When I went through my 4 cameras in 2 years, I got all 3 of the replacements for free. Otherwise, I would have been out over $200 when my first one broke after 8 months of light use.

Great topic Lisa. I think I will be asking for this for my birthday. I currenly have a Kodak Easy Share or something like that. Takes very basic pics and forget about trying to take a picture of anything closer than 4 feet from you....or seeing any sort of detail in any picture for that matter. It was fine for high school events (I've had it since then), but time for a big girl camera
