Some background first: DBF and I have been together for a little over 6 years. We were friends for 8 years previous to that (we met when we were 13).
Now, I've never been one of those typical girls in 'wanting' to get married. I've always been quite happy just living with my DBF. We've travelled all over the world together, brought our own home and are planning to have a family together, but marriage has never been a huge 'need' for me.
Our experience last year, with losing our baby really made me realise just how much I loved this man. The way he supported me through that time really showed me what an amazing, strong person he is. Even though I 'knew' I was going to spend the rest of my life with this person, those terrible months made me love him even more.
A little more background: we have been back in New Zealand for two years now, but for the 3 years before that, we went back to England as I wanted to 'see the world' and DBF wanted to visit his extended family. His parents and siblings moved to NZ when DBF was 13 years old. We spend a lot of time with his Grandparents while we were over there, and left not expecting to see them ever again (they are in their late 80's and realistically we didn't think we'd be able to afford to get back there before they passed away).
DBF's Grandmother died a couple of months ago, and his Grandfather has decided he wants to fly out from England to New Zealand to see all the family.
When we heard this, it was so exciting! His Grandfather is such a sweet, gentle man and DBF is very close to him. After hearing this news, DBF turned to me and said "I want us to get married when Grampy is here".
So yep, we are engaged! Wedding will be December 2010/January 2011 when his Grandfather is here. It won't be a big event, most probably just immediate family, grandparents and a few close friends. DBF's sister is also engaged and wants to get married at the same time since her Grandfather will be out here, so we are considering having a joint wedding, maybe at the beach.
I've now been told I have to find a ring, then I'll get 'proposed to properly'! Also, DBF wants to 'ask' my Dad first, so we need to wait until Dad is home and has recovered a little more before that happens.
This is so funny! I really didn't see myself ever getting married!
So I guess I better start calling DBF... DF!!

That is awesome Tasha! And so sweet! I think it is very romantic. You are going to have the wedding I dreamed of -- small and on the beach! I hear NZ has beautiful beaches too.

Thats such wonderful news Tasha! I was just like you, never cared about getting married, starting trying for a baby before we were even engaged! Then my DH proposed and it was AMAZING ... that feeling that this man wanted to make that commitment to me. Its different, different than just being "boyfriend and girlfriend" and then my wedding was the absolute best day of my life. And now having him as my husband, honestly I cannot even put the feeling into words, my life is better than I ever thought it could be!
I think you'll find it all the same for you!

That is WONDERFUL news Tash!!! Its funny how certain events occur that have the unexpected happen or that brings out things that one never thought would be! Now you get to be like Vi and Paige and go wedding dress shopping and all of that wedding stuff.
