Well my day was going pretty well until a co-worker of mine who just had a baby let me know that my job only pays for 5 weeks of maternity leave instead of 6. The 1st week is unpaid b/c they have to process it (I'll be using my vacation time during that period). I originally thought that I had a week's wait and then got 6 paid weeks. Taking away that week has me pretty bummed b/c thats one less week at home with my Lani.
I have FMLA that I could use in which I wont get paid. But I cannot afford to take an extra week off. I originally wanted 8 weeks but I have to be realistic b/c I clearly have a mortgage to pay in addition to other important bills.
Im officially jealous of you SAHMs!!!!
I need to move to Canada or win the Mega Millions or Powerball!!!

That does stink
Only reason I stay home is cause we can't afford day care even if I worked(my checks would go to the extra gas costs, and daycare it wouldn't be making enough to make a difference in the household since I'd be working a regular job)

I'm sorry hun When I worked in the salon I would have had NO mat. leave! I quit at 33 weeks to be a SAHM though so it didn't matter but I often wondered how everyone else did it!

Unfortunately that sounds about standard for a paid maternity leave. Is it coverd by short term disability? That is usually how most maternity leaves are paid in the US.
The company I worked for while pregnant with Oliver was smal. They didn't even have to give me a maternity leave and it was unpaid. The company I worked at before that would have given me 6 weeks for a vaginal birth but only 5 weeks would have been paid by STD insurance. It's just stinks how little we get. 5-6 weeks is no time at all. I took 12 wks unpaid and that went by so fast too.

Res - Maternity leave is Short Term Disab. so I guess that makes sense. If I have a c-section they'll give me 7 weeks of paid leave instead of 5.
At my old job I had 8 weeks of paid leave. It was actually called maternity leave and not short term disab. They also had paternity leave too for about 2 or 3 weeks.
I'm thankful that I do have maternity leave though b/c as Lisa stated, some people have NO maternity leave. But why must it be so short!

Yea I found that out a fews ago too! I am only taking 7 weeks with my short term disability and using a good chunk of my vacation and sick leave so I can get paid double.

Ya I guess they think of maternity leave as a healing time for mommy not about the baby. That's really ridiculous!

Wow, I honestly find that disgusting. Over here you cvan get upto 11 months off aswell as the daddy being able to get paternity leave of 2wks after the birth aswell.
So, hearing you say like 5wks...Its just crazy!

That really sucks!
I had no paid maternity leave when I had Liam. I had to use up all my vacation and personal days (which was only 1.5 weeks) and the rest was unpaid FMLA.

I vote you stay here in America.. Canada isn't that great..
You should look at the bright side.. You have 5 weeks paid maternity leave.. At my work, they don't give any paid time off, I had to use my vacation time and sick time..
You may also want to save a few days for the books.. Just in case something happens and you need time off.. When A.J was in the hospital, I had no time on the books and I basically didn't get paid for 3 days.. Sucks, but my sons health is more important then money..
I would love to be a SAHM, but I make to much money not to work.. And with the way the country is going, I'm vary thankful I have a job..

Can you take a temporary layoff and collect unemployment? That's what I will be doing. I didn't even ask about maternity leave because I am just going to take temporary layoff starting in late June/early July and stay off until the end of the year or so. My company is awesome about letting us do that though. Would your company even consider you taking an extra 6 weeks of layoff or something?

I don't have any maternity leave. I am just pretty much quitting my job when I have Harper and then hopefully starting a new full time job in January.

I'm sorry that is a sucky situation, I don't have any other ideas because obviously I haven't been in that situation yet, but I hope something gets settled and you get extra time with Lani!

That stinks. I took ST Disability. They gave me like 8 weeks or something. I got more for the section. The rest was unpaid FML.
