well I just mentioned this in another post but I went yesterday to visit a private Christian school for kindergarten/elementary school for Harrison and LOVED it. I went to Christian school all my life (even college) and I loved it. I went to big ones with all the normal things schools have. DH went to a little tiny Christian school that didn't have anything (he was in high school) and he hated it (he went to public elementary school right here in the county we live in so he knows the schools here until 3rd grade and then was homeschooled and that was like a nightmare he still lives with to this day so NOOOOOO homeschool for us - I could never do it anyway I hate teaching) - we're trying to make sure if we choose the private school route Harrison and Nora have the opportunities they would have in most public schools in term of the extra curricular activities/ etc.

The public schools in our county are not that great so the kids will either go private school, private Christian school, or a charter school (there is a great charter school in our county). The one awesome thing about the school i visited the other day is that is has a daycare/full day preschool for Nora...so I could take them to the same place. No other school around here offers that.

Funny thing is (and ironic about this bumper sticker) most Christian schools we've looked into do have corporal punishment as part of their discipline philosophy. Now, they use a paddle not a hand and they cannot paddle your child without your permission so my children would never be paddled I don't believe in spanking......if your child is sooooo disrespectful and naughty that they get to this point (which most administrators have told me is rare and paddling comes after blantant and continuous misbehaving) you have the right to come to the school and deal with your child yourself. So that is funny that this sticker says public schools = child abuse....most public schools don't allow corporal punishment. I can see this isn't what it meant probably but I find it really ironic!

If I had more patients(or Seamus calms down in the next year) my kids would be home schooled. I hated school because of the way the teachers and students treated me.

And Idaho public schools rank 43rd in the country....so ya not that great

Thats a strong statement on it! So the private catholic school in my town that was run by nuns who hit you with rulers was better?! LOL
on topic but off OP.....did you hear about the texas teacher who's student punch another in the face.....she told the other kids to punch the puncher! He got punched over 12 times (she lost her job by the end of the day).

I don't know that I'd go as far as to say that public school is child abuse....but we've already started homeschooling and have no intention of stopping. I didn't enjoy school because of other kids...but I loved school. I wasn't there for the other kids, I was there to learn! But I think there are too many children assigned to one teacher and there isn't enough one-on-one interaction with a teacher so that is why we choose to homeschool. And I can base lessons around my kids interest. Let's face it, kids are more willing to learn if it's something they WANT to learn!

My teachers constantly told my mother I had comprehension problems....I didn't have comprehension problems...I just didn't want to read what they were telling me to read. If they had let me read Danielle Steel, then my reading level would have been well above my peers and I had plenty of teacher comment on my excellent grammar and we didn't have grammar classes in school.

I wouldnt call the driver 'uneducated' - maybe their child was the product of child abuse in a public school....dont judge the book by the cover....

I for one, have witnessed teachers mouthing off to students. I was in the 5th grade and had a music teacher from hell. Had we provoked him anymore than we did (always called us ungrateful and stupid) I think he would have raised a hand to my friend who called him out on the spot. Her and I got sent to the principals office, and none of the teachers believed us. It was frustrating that teachers thought we were lying...Not every "abuse" is physical...

Bad teachers happen everywhere, public or private. We plan on doing Montessori school for our kids.

Thats not the norm though!!! Yes it does happen, but it's not typical!!! I had a teacher throw a ruler at a kid, but that one teacher doesn't make all public schools unsafe. Today I had a patient cry, but that doesn't make all dentist offices' a bad place to be.

My point exactly, what works for on child/family may not work for another. I bet though you wouldn't sport a bumper stick that said "I homeschool my kids because all public schools suck" You d it because it works for you.

I would call them uneducated because if they are passing a judgement on all public schooling then they don't know what they are talking about.

I dont think the person in the van just slapped on that sticker saying "ohh look what I believe in today!!" I think there is a reason behind such a statement. Its not a statement to be out and proud about unless you went through something horrific.

I understand that, but not ALL public schools are like that. Maybe her situation was terrible, but theres no need to put all public schools in one horrible category!! I sure has heck wasn't abused in public school!!! SO the statement is untrue.

Anyways, this wasn't meant to be a debate on her being right or wrong, I was just asking a question about what kind of school your child will attend!!!

My child/children will attend public school.....bumper stickers like that IRRITATE me! I am a public school teacher. It really irks me when people start bashing public schools....I hold two degrees and two credentials. I have jumped through many, many hoops to become "highly qualified" and yet- still hear a bunch of negativity towards public schools.....They are not "that bad"......Public school teachers go through a lot to be able to teach and yet to homeschool you don't need a degree or credential at all.....that I don't understand. I am a product of the public school system and had no problems.

I have to agree with Morgs on calling the person a bit uneducated. The bumper sticker is supporting the fact that all public schools=child abuse...really? I don't think so. There are definitely unique situations but that happens everywhere. I agree many classes are overloaded and teachers have way to much on their plates- but thats the fault of the government! Not the teachers and they shouldn't be bashed for not giving enough 1:1 interaction when they have so many students at once. I just feel like we don't get enough credit for what we do end up doing....instead it's always negative comments and it irritates me.......

sorry off my soap box now!

Public school does NOT equal child abuse. There might be situations that result in it but saying that it equals it is completely uneducated. Does this person know every single teacher? No. Does this person know first hand what goes on in every single class room? No.

This person is the one that is judging the book by it's cover. Saying that all public schools equal child abuse is very stereotypical (is that's the right word?).

Plenty of people had good experiences in public schools, and plenty have not.

I think it's a ridiculous statement.

For the record I went to a private Christian school and it was NOT any better then any other school. It was a horrible experience.

I also went to private Christian school and had my handful of awful teachers and bad experiences.

Just because someone doesn't have the "proper" credentials and degrees doesn't mean they are incapable of teaching a child a lesson. I was NOT bashing public school teachers for not providing one on one interaction...I understand that it's just not possible, there aren't enough hours in the day to focus on each individual student. I know...I had teachers who wouldn't even take time to help me in areas I were I struggling because they didn't like me....And I even went as far as to ask for extra credit to bring my grade up and they wouldn't give it to me. And I had teachers who had so many children in their class that they didn't realize I was struggling....I'm not saying they were horrible teachers. Yes, that's a certain amount of teachers who try to help all their students the best they can...but not all teachers are there for the interest of the students. I'm simply saying that I can provide my children with the one on one interaction that a teacher cannot.
