I also posted this in my DDC, but I wanted to see what everyone here had to say too
I was at my Grandma's house a couple months ago and she pulled out the instuction packet the hospital gave her when she took my mom home after delivery. It was hysterical!
First, according to my Grandma, no one breastfed. They gave her 'something' to dry up her milk at the hospital.
Next, they didn't have specific infant formula. They were instructed to use 1/2 evaporated milk and 1/2 water for bottles. They would make a big batch of this the night before, boil it, then make all their bottles for the next day.
It also said to start giving them cottage cheese and oatmeal at 2 weeks old!!
What things have you heard about your relatives doing with babies that are not recommended anymore?

Oh my goodness! I can't believe they were so much against BFing back then. I wonder what they gave women to "dry them up". I wonder if you had options back then to go against what the hospital wanted? I don't know when patients rights were instated.

Hmmm, my mom BF'ed and I was born in '84. I know stomach sleeping was encouraged and carseats weren't such a big deal. My mom was also told a couple drinks a week or month were okay (I don't think she did though). I will have to ask her what else she was told when I see her tonight!
I know the stupid nurse told me you're most fertile right after birth and that she knew a lady whose kids were only 8 months apart. Yeah, because you can't even get it on for 6 weeks so apparently her 'friend' had her second baby 2.5 months early. I think she just was trying to scare me because I was younger when I had Gem.

Jasons moms Dr told her it was okay to drink and have a few cigarettes "here and there" And my step dad always talks about how he was NEVER in a car seat...he remembers standing in the front seat of his moms car while she drove!

That is scary and crazy. Maybe it's a US thing? My grandmother breastfed both of her children but she was from Germany and came here in her 20's after having her first child.

With my grandma - She BFed my mom but had problems with her 2nd child but no formula so she did some kind of cow's milk but not sure what.
No carseats and something was wrong with their car door and as a kid my mom fell out of the car once while it was making a turn (luckily not going fast and she wasn't hurt but my grandma was traumatized!)
With my mom - I know they gave me apple juice in my bottles from a young age, she tried to BF but when she felt like I wasn't getting enough there was no support they just told her to switch me to formula. I know she feels bad sometimes that she wanted to BF but I told her I am proud she tried and did for those 3 weeks because heck if I didn't have anyone to tell me about how the growth spurts worked I probably would have quit too! Solids were started early, like 2-3 months.

My mom BF'd both of her babies, and that was 1980 and 1986 so I dont know about the shot. Ill have to ask my mom what all was encouraged when I was a baby! I know they let me chew on toothbrushes when I was a tiny tot *like learning how to walk!!!* could you imagine what could of happened?!

Wow! LOL Well, I was born on a naval base, and my mom was encouraged to breastfeed, use a carseat, and all that. When my grandmother talked about having her 12 kids, it was much the same minus the carseats. But yeah, BFing has always been encouraged here. Guess AZ is pretty smart in those regards

That's crazy!!! We were all breastfed but I remember my mom telling me that she gave us goat's milk prior to us turning one.
Well, believe it or not, children here are not required to be in carseats. Babies and infants can be held in arms once in the back seat of a car. Children under 6 years old are to ride in backseats but this is not enforced. The mandatory seat bealt law in front and back seats was only instituted a few years ago.
Most persons with vehicles will purchase car seats and booster seats since we follow a lot of trends from the US and UK.

I let Gem chew on a toothbrush (supervised of course). I think that's why she doesn't fight me on brushing her teeth and LOVES to floss. Dental hygiene is really important to me because my entire family has weak teeth (Gem has had something like 9 fillings despite our careful care). So I really think it's actually a GOOD idea to let kids 'brush' their teeth from an early age!

Speaking of toothbrushing, I just want to say Matthew LOVES this toothbrush:
Amazon.com: Baby Banana Bendable Training Toothbrush, Toddler: Baby
He chews on it after his bath and then if he's in a good enough mood, I will brush his teeth while singing him a song.

My mom Bf me and I was born in '87
my grandma didn't bf, my mom was born in '68 and they too were against bfing then, no carseats, tummy sleeping, food early all that jazz.
My grandma said they binded her breasts, or well told her to bind them with an ace bandage after my dad('69 and my aunt '74) and she couldn't figure it out, she thought she had to wrap the bandage around each breast
But you are most fertile after birth, I know there's some that start DTD right after they get home from the hospital, not everyone waits the suggested 6weeks(we never have even after the c-section with Kieran) I know some ladies have only a 9-10mo gap between kids.

WOW! Thats crazy! The only thing I can really think off was my nan said when she had her kids she had to do it alone as fathers weren't allowed in the room and that they were in hospital for a week but weren't allowed their babies. They were to stay in the nursery (they could visit but not take them out).
