Oliver had his 18 month appointment today and he saw a different doctor. Our doc was on vacation and he saw the male doctor who I never met before. When he was checking his private area he pulled back his foreskin! When I saw him start to pull it back and told him no, I never pull it back. He stopped and said he didn't pull it all the way back or only pulled it back as far as it would go. It ticked me off and now I'm worried that it was retracted too far. There better be no problems. I always have a hard time standing up to doctors. Why don't they know to leave it alone!? I wouldn't bother with wellness visits but like to have a pedi incase he gets sick enough to need meds. Wellness checks ar required to be a patient. I will make sure we only see his doc in the future.

OMG!! I would be soooo ticked off. I hate that people still think the foreskin needs to be pulled back. It can be really risky to do that!
My mom was visiting last week and took Dominic for a diaper change, and the next time I changed him I noticed the tip of his penis looked a bit red. It has never looked like that before. I seriously think that my mom pulled the foreskin back with a wipe or something, even though I have explicitly told her he does not need that. She had 2 sons circumcised, but she's a nurse... you think she (and that doctor) would know better. Dominic and his penis seem fine now but I was worried.

Oh no Was he in any pain of discomfort?? That really sucks. Even I, with circ'ed penis' all around me know not to pull it back... You'd think a doc would to!!
It's so hard to stand up to dr! It sucks you have to do well baby check ups to stay a patient! I haven't been to one in a while now actually.... I think they are a waste of time.... we get shots and measurements done at a health unit here.

I hear you! I actually made a decision to stop well visits. I mean honestly, if I think there's a problem developmentally or otherwise, I will take him in.
I hope hes ok!

He didn't seem in pain when it was done but I sure cringed. I had to look away because I never saw was was under/in there. I was scared it would hurt him. Maybe it wasn't pulled back that far but it was more than was ever done before. His other doc just touches the tip to take a look. Oliver screamed and cried the whole time he was examined. He doesn't like strangers messing with him. He was soo upset and stayed upset after the doc left and I got him dressed.
I just changed his diaper again and his penis look like normal so I don't think any harm was done.

The doc isn't suppose to pull back the foreskin if the boy is intact at this age. It can cause problems if it's done. At this age the skin isn't retractable so it's like tearing which can lead to infections (I think this is the reason). I'm sure they check little girls down there at well visits too? Just a quick check to make sure everything looks healthy?

I'm sorry. Hopefully all is well. I'd always heard the same as Justine but I'm not sure at what age you start doing it.

The rule is the the OWNER of the penis can retract it THEN it should be retracted. And don't forcefully retract (but they do retract a touch at this age).
Resi you would KNOW if he did forcefully retract it because it would be red/bleeding/painful.....imagine your lower lip getting pulled to touch your neck and the fine skin under your teeth ripping--same thing!
*I* was taught in Nursing school to pull back! Its actually a new (ok new to the USA) that you don't pull it back, and heck I know midwest schools still teaching the wrong way! I'm sure you have his name....Get online to the nocirc website and there you can get some info to send to them or give the site his info and they can do stuff.
FYI---people are sueing and WINNING for doing this since it does cause so many issues! THIS is why people think/thought intact was always infected and nasty because they were pulling them back then having an open wound in a dark/pee/wet area....of COURSE thats going to cause an infection!
So as much as I would love to just hate on the DR and nurses they ARE doing what they were taught.....they NEED to be updated! And unfortunately thats the parents job right now in most of the midwest. Get the NoCIrc info!
We don't do well visits either. London last saw the dr at 14 days old (only because we needed a note to get him on the plane at that age). I will take him in next time we are in chicago though...LOVE the group there!!!!

I'm really thinking about skipping well visits from now on. But what would I do if he was sick and needed meds? I guess I could take him to a regular family doctor? I did find a great doc that practices eastern and western med. but he isn't taking on children at the time.

We just have a family doctor and we only go when the boys are sick or something is concerning us. He also sees us. I love our doctor. He's pretty laid back.

I'm sorry Resi. I'm glad Oliver seems to be doing okay.
I didn't know that either... definitely good to know. I always thought that you were supposed to pull it back to clean it? But I've never had one of my own and I don't know much about babies, so I'm way off base.

When they get older and it's naturally pulled back then it needs to be cleaned by pulling it back. But at this age the skin is still attached so if you pull it back it's like ripping the skin back.

ours group is family doctors. in the last 10-15 years people stop using them for everything and now go to the specialists like OBGYNs and Pediatrictions. IMHO thats over kill unless there is a REASON to see the specialist.
