My cousin has a 1 week old baby!! She is using prefolds and covers. He leaks through the prefolds into the cover every time he pees!! She puts the prefold in the cover and then puts it on the baby!! She asked me for help, Im not sure I know the answer for this one though!!

i've never clothed a new born, we started when Kieran was 4mo old. but I'm guessing she needs to double up and/or get some doublers. Is she just trifolding it and laying it in the cover or is she pinning/snappiing it on him?

Yes, the cover is waterproof, but he leaks through the prefold!!! The refold should absorb the pee shouldn't it??

Also if you dont tuck in the cloth into the cover around his legs, he will leak. So probably doubling up and making sure NONE of the cloth is outside of the cover, shell be ok. Ive read/heard/talked to many ladies who have used disposables for the first 2 weeks until their baby was big enough to fit in a prefold.

Justine, trifolding on top of another prefold would count as doubling up?

Inserts alot of time are either hem or microfiber,(and used to stuff pocket diapers or stuffable AIO's) and you can't have microfiber touch the baby's skin or it will dry out.

Have her try trifolding 2 prefolds together. What kind of prefolds are they?

Only other thought is that they need to be prepped more.

Inserts I believe are just the same as doublers, except a doubler is thicker

They are and they aren't

Doublers can be anything, from an prefold layed into a diaper, to a fleece/flannel/cotton/hemp doubler. And not all doublers are thicker then inserts (take using a prefold as an example, its not as thick as a microfiber insert) actually now that I think about it, none of my doublers are as thick as the inserts.

Hmm. I was going to say maybe it needs to be prepped more too.

Did she prep them the recommended amount of times?

but ya deffo tell her to prep them more. Generally 5 washes and drys for prefolds. The fluff up the more they are washed and dried.

We have Bummis Organic prefolds and I trifold them in Kieran's covers and you can barley feel they are damp even after a nap

What brand of prefolds is she using? If they are Gerber, that's her problem.

my first thought was the same as alice, those sound like gerber prefolds to me.

gerber's are terrible and not appropriate for use as a diaper from what i hear.
she should get chinese prefolds.
