How did your DH feel about CD when you first mentioned you wanted to do it? Was he on board right away or have doubts?

I ask because Jason is really, really against it. We agree on almost all other "parenting choices" we both pretty much 100% want to be attached parents in most all aspects of the parenting style. He is just a man and just doesnt get it I guess. I try and tell him about all the benefits, but he just thinks its gross to wash our clothes where we would be washing dirty diapers. I tell him that you clean off the poopy diapers first, then he thinks thats gross and more of a hassle! I cant win with this man! We are BOTH going to be parents (if our time ever comes) and I want us to both agree on as many parenting choices as we can. How can I get him on board?

Damon's first reaction was no because it's gross. He had no problems with it after we bought everything and Oliver was here. He would leave the poop diapers for me to deal with when I got home. He didn't want to rinse them off and I was fine with it.

Maybe you can get a few to try out and see if he will change his mind after seeing how it works?

My DH is an accountant who is so tight he squeaks when he walks.

All I had to do was say "It will save us money in the long run" and he said "have fun buying diapers". Now he can snappi a prefold like a champ.

Hubby was against it when I mentioned it with Curtis. He said it would be too much work and blah blah. But then when I brought it up again with Dustin he was totally fine and you know why?? Cause I do all the changes hahahaha. He realizes that he has NO opinion unless he actually changes diapers. And now he would if he needed too (like if I left the boys with him etc etc). He LOVES cloth diapers

my dh laughs and says 'oh we'll see how long that lasts'. i dont get it! i have been using diva cup/cloth pads for a long while now and that doesnt gross me out. i love not having to run out to buy that stuff and i feel like it will be the same with diapers. even though my dh wasnt '100% on board' per se i still went out and got a whole ton of CD. he can join me in CD or go buy disposables to use, but i'm not buying any! he also laughs heartily at me trying to EC, even though i got my nephew to poop on the toilet twice at like a week or two old. i figure i'm gunna be at home anyways so why not, plus one less CD to wash is that much better!

DH was more like "well what ever you want to do since you will change most of them and you will wash them" LOL
We did 1 package of sposies and he HATED them plus we had blowouts. He actually loves the cloth and even has favorites he requests. And he did mainly prefolds/snappi/covers till london was 3 months.
Hospitals wash all their nasty laundry together and its one of the cleanliest places

Also I do most the shopping so he was going to use whatever I bought. Plus his mom cloth diapered him also.

He had never changed a diaper anyway so he didn't know any difference.

As you know, I have an entire stash of beautiful cloth diapers that are not being used. The other day we had lunch with a friend and she asked how CDing was going and DH was like 'oh we wound up not doing that, which is totally my fault, I kind of pushed for it.' and its true. What's weird is DH was completely 1,000% on board while I was pregnant. I told him all the benefits, it was great that I had paid for everyhting up front so we wouldn't have any parenting costs once she was here (esp since I bf) but all that went out in the window in the hospital somehow.

I was pumped about CDing and dreamt about it while I was pg... I didn't really dream about the baby, just diapering her. But yeah, in the hospital we had pampers swaddlers diapers and that was fine, we figured we'd take home the pack to use the first few days. DH changed like every single diaper the first week since he was home and I was a wreck. He fell in love with sposies.

He just kept buying them... and if they're here I'd rather use a sposie than a cloth diaper. I put on my beautiful kl0's and then when I changed her they were wet. haha. Obviously they're wet... but somehow I didn't expect to be touching so much pee. You don't have to do that with sposies. It's nice.

I still see all the benefits to them though so I'm not ready to abandon ship and get rid of my stash. If she ever gets a bad diaper rash or something I'll have them on hand. I'd probably be a fan of my AIO's but I just don't want to try and have like a load of 2 cloth diaper laundry.

Anyway, I guess you didn't need my whole cloth diapering story. It's just that when I was in CDing land I didn't really see many people who decided cloth as a whole wasn't for them, not after being SO EXCITED about it. And DH was totally on board, so it seemed. So I'm just throwing it out there that if he is REALLY against it, and you think he'll be changing diapers a lot (Ben changes all of them when he's home since I do all the feeding) it might not be worth it to push him until your LO is actually here and you know how often he'll be diapering.

That is very true Shannon. And he will be changing diapers alot, he is very hands on and cant wait to care for a baby. So I guess we'll wait it out....? Its gonna be so hard though not buying all kinds of CD's while im pregnant! I will really want to! I'll probably get a few AIO's to try out. Im really not into anything other than AIO's anyway.

I was shocked (when we were together) and Will agreed to it. He just doesnt think I'll stick to it b/c i'm on the go a lot and he doesnt think I'll put in the extra effort to wash. Who knows, he might be right.

I have my stash just in case. But as long as there are sposies in the house that I dont have to buy (a lot as baby shower gifts) I'll be using sposies. Unless she gets god awful rashes that cant be tamed.

I agree though, if he'll be changing most of the dipes and will be buying them, it might be best to just use sposies but also get some CDs to try out.

(BEWARE... buying CDs can get VERY VERY VERY addictive!)

I'm no help! Dh was on board from day one and even let me buy diapers BEFORE i was pregnant.

my husband thought they were cute and soft. I put a diaper on a teddy bear, and then he tried and that convinced him that he would be able to do it.

DH basically told me he would agree with whatever I wanted to do as far as diapers are concerned, although he was a little weirded out by the idea and called me a "tree hugging hippie!"

I would try just buying one and show him how it works, maybe that will help? He acts as though that kind of stuff is never going to make it in the wash... what about when baby has a blowout and you need to wash sheets? What about all those burp cloths going in the wash? And when baby pees all over you!

I hope that he comes around if you are really really set on it...you do need to both be on board with stuff like that!.....however I'm a sposie diapering mom....I have ZERO desire to do any of that washing, rinsing, etc. etc. Plus what a nightmare for me having my baby in daycare.....they don't even rinse out her bibs or anything so everynight she'd be sent home with dried out crusty nasty diapies....no thank you! I can't even imagine being at a restaurant and having to deal with all that and packing baggies to stick them in while out and all that...I just don't have the patience for all that...my anxiety would be thru the roof....it just all sounds like a nightmare for me!

I guess I'm actually relieved to see Shannon's story and know its okay that I use disposable diapers because that is what works for us. I know that it helps the environment to use cloth but I guess I look at it like I'm using less soap and less water and that helps the environment too right!? HA Just humour me here!
Good luck Ashley!!!!

ETA - I never really thought about the diaper rash issue with sposie...I'm lucky I guess cause neither of my kids (at least so far too with Nora) have had much trouble with diaper rash....I think I've used cream on Nora once since she's been born.

I just told Chris, "Hey, I've decided to use cloth diapers instead of disposibles" and he said "okay." He had no choice in the matter and he knew it! When I set my mind on something...I do it no matter who doesn't agree!

DH changed 50% of the dipes till london was about 5 months, now he mainly does the bedtime one.
shannon you don't touch that much pee except for the fitted ones. Even the prefolds just flop out of the cover so you don't have to really touch them.

We do disposables. I think I am the only one of this board that never even considered CD'ing, lol!

But my one bit of advice to you, is to sit down and decide together what you want to do. If he is really against it, then it might be okay to bend a bit. I think its important that the daddy feels involved and taken seriously in all the parenting decisions. I think your idea about just buying a couple CD's and then trying them out first is a great idea!!!

I just told Shane CD is healthier, cheaper and I don't want to have to run to the store in the middle of the night with a five year old and a newborn. Once I got my tax return I bought my whole stash and then showed him how each one works on baby dolls and teddy bears. He still isn't gung ho but I know that, at least while I'm home mostly for the first 3-6 months, it will be easier on me in the long run.

The problems I had with sposies with Gem were blowouts, leaks, stinking up the house (they end up sitting almost ALL week as opposed to a couple days), then racoons and neighborhood animals would tear up the garbage to get to them. I would go out the next morning and have to clean up all our trash all over again because animals LOVE baby poop! I even had one of those nifty diaper pails with the bag liner and ended up giving up on it because it would get full really quickly and it was hard to change the bags. I wouldn't realize we were getting low on the bag liner things until we were out and then I'd be scrambling to get to the store. Plus if the bag ripped then poop smeared on the inside of the pail and it was really hard to clean.

I'm very excited about having the ability to just throw a load of dipes in the wash in the morning and have them ready to use again by night. No garbage, no mess, no stink, no wasted money....

Talk about things like that (the animals, the smell, etc) with Jason plus PM me your address and I will send you a dipe to show him if you want!
