I'm just curious if weight has anything to do with Gestation Diabetes at all? I mean just healthy wise weight.
When I was pregnant with Curtis I started off around 125 or so and gained alot. I didn't have GD or anything close to it that I know of. Then I didn't lose the weight and got pregnant with Dustin and was border line GD. Now that I've lost a bunch of weight and got healthy again I'm wondering if that will help me to stay safe?
or maybe it doesn't have anything to do with it???
And why is it that i feel STUPID asking questions since this is the third (healthy) pregnancy I have had!? haha

Yes you are more prone to GD if your 25 and overweight. Seeing as this is your 3rd it doesn't make you safe (I'm boarderlining GD) but seeing as you slimmed down pre pregnancy you should be ok. I'd still add extra protein and calcium.

Even the healthest person can get GD, its rare but when I hosted the GD board 9 a couple years back) I'd get ladies come in and say "I weigh in healthy weight for my height(even had alady that was like a personal trainer), why do I have GD". Some women are genetically predisposed to it.
But yes being over weight will make it more likely (though I've known people that weighed alot more then I did that never had gd and I've had it 2 times). You're probably less likely to get it now that you're a healthy weight. Also age is a factor, I forget exactly the age groups but I think its the older ones that have a higher chance

I'm not sure but I did have a skinny friend who had GD so I wouldn't assume so.

I am a skinny, fairly healthy, girl who had GD twice....genetics suck in the way of diabetes in my case! HA ....I certainly hope you don't get it and you probably won't.... but there is always a chance of developing it I guess....but the chances are slim if you don't have certain risk factors (like I did - stupid genetics!). Weight is only one of MANY risk factors....
ETA: when I looked at this the first time I posted it looked like I was calling myself skinny, pretty and healthy....what a snob huh...but I wasn't...I meant to say pretty healthy - pretty as a adjective for healthy, I changed it to fairly... gahhh I've probably over analyzed how this looked and everything - ignore me now....my brain is fried from working on tax returns! HE HE HE

Im sure that may have a lot to do with it but I think anyone can still get it. Have you asked your doc?

I don't know for sure, but I would bet it has more to do with how healthy you are, not exactly your weight. We all know some skinny people can eat horribly without gaining weight. Factor that in with genetics, and there you have it.

Well I know hypertension is one and I have chronic hypertension as welll....also a family thing....other than that I'm not sure but I know you could probably find a bunch of info on the net.
My mom and her sister both have issues with pre-diabetes and had issues with diabetes in pregnancy (and both are not over weight ladies).....my cousin (mom's sisters daughter) had GD with all three of her pregnancies as well.....so it does run in families...my cousin is small like me too.

I do believe a lot of GD is due to genetics. Crappy as it seems My midwife said if your 25, overweight and have diabetes in your family, your at a risk. Well Im 2 outta 3 so thats why I have it. With Ian I was right at the cut off, with Morgan I was about 10 points away and this one I was about 6 points over. Now even after testing myself for 2 weeks, changing my diet, blah blah blah, I dont think I have it, but I am still treating myself for it. My mid wife said the diet wont hurt even during labor because protein is what keeps the baby's sugar's up as well. Which is a must since Ian's blood sugar was down quite a bit when he was born because they wouldn't allow me food during labor - which is bad if your GD....
ok none of that made sense to me...LOL

(I've had it 2 times too....)
Family history of GD and Type 2 diabetes are also risk factors, poor diet(obvious ), 25 and older and from the Mayo clinic's site Race (more likely in african americans, asians, and american Indian)
Gestational diabetes: Risk factors - MayoClinic.com

Hmm... it's all very interesting!
My mom has diabetes. I don't know much about it cause she doesn't talk about her health but I know it affects her greatly. My sister has GD at the moment I believe with her current pregnancy (her first).
It's definately in my genetics! Hopefully me being healthier, and under 25 (for a bit anyways) will help....
I really don't want it!

Well like I said, already start the GD diet and you should be fine. Cut out refined sugars *white bread, carbs - Ive switched to wheat bread and rice noodles* and add in more protein. Which is actually a VERY healthy pregnancy diet to be on!! youd be amazed what a snack of mixed nuts and natural yogurt can do to ya!! Cant say Ive had more energy, since I started it at the last part of my pregnancy (when all energy gets sucked out of your body...good lord why does it do this?!?!) And yes, being at a healthy weight helps out!!
