I'm considering getting an induction this Friday (40 weeks) or on Monday (the 19th). I know I might get some mixed answers/opinions on this. I'm sick and tired of being pregnant. I'm not a big fan of pregnancy, just the motherhood part. I'm extremely exhausted and tired. My doc wont put me on bedrest :/ I'm ready to leave work and go on maternity leave but my time with Lani will be cut short if I go on leave now. I only get 6 weeks. Luckily for the rest of the week I get to work from home, but I dread going back to work next week!

I talked with my doc and she told me the procedure. Basically I'd come in the night before and get cervidil/prostaglandin gel applied to my cervix to help ripen and dilate it, then the next day I come in and get on pitocin (in which I wont be able to move about and walk around freely). She did say that b/c I'm not dilated at all, that increases the risk of a c-section.

They dont like to induce until 41 weeks but will do it per patient request. Anybody have any experience with cervidil? I've heard that the gel alone can make some go into labor.

I was induced with Seamus but they used something called cydodel or something (I know it wasn't cervidil but similar) around 9pm on a monday night, and then around 6am on Tuesday morning the pit was started. At 9am my ob broke my water(I was like 3cm or so at that point, I came in at a 1cm) and then about an hour later my epi went in and I was fine pain wise then. Seamus was born at 10:12pm vaginally, no c-section was needed, Though they gave me till Wed. morning to have him on my own before they did a c-section. My induction started at 39weeks 5days he was born at 39weeks 6 days, almost 40weeks exactly. (I was induced because an u/s on the 14th of July showed him at over 9lbs, my insulin injections weren't cutting for my breakfast numbers anymore, and I'd been having major bp issues for over a month but wasn't spilling protein so they brushed it off as pih (bp was bad was getting upto 150/100+ would go down a litte but staying high and the headaches sucked, I hated being pregnant with him )

Heres my birth story with him I wrote almost 4ys ago

Good luck with what you choose and I'll send you ELV and I can't wait to see her pictures!!

I was induced full on with Harrison cause of my bp (not with Nora - started labor on my own but got pit to keep it going cause of my bp) ...with both I never got any gel...just pit...and didn't need much...I was already a tad dialated with both and my body just did labor quickly and easily - especially after my water was broken (both times by doc). I don't know at all anything about the gel...is there a chance you could get induced without gel or cervidil...have you been checked for progress "down there"??? HE HE HE

I hope whatever you choose she gets here fast because her JM aunties are anxiously waiting for her!

I've only had 1 induction and it was just with pitocin. My water broke but contractions didn't start. It was fine, really really quick and very intense. I could walk around though.. how come you can't? I did my labor in the shower, very nice!

I would strongly suggest waiting as long as you can but that's just my personal opinion. 41 weeks even seems early to me! haha. But of course it's up to you.

Cytotec?

Chelle, I'm probably going to be one of those "mixed" responses you were talking about but please know I'm about to say all of this from a place of caring and not trying to be mean. I personally think that being induced because someone is "over pregnancy" is a terrible reason for an induction. You are a smart, strong, intelligent woman so I implore you to do the research and see what kind of risks you are opening yourself and your baby to simply because you are tired of being pregnant. If God forbid something should happen to you or sweet baby Lani as a result of an induction complication, will the shortened time you were pregnant have been worth it??

The other thing you have to think about is that when you start an induction, you pretty much turn everything about your birth over to the hospital staff. You will have severely limited your choices (tied to a bed so no shower/tub laboring, you'll be "on the clock", etc) and I'd hate to see you do that when there is no medically necessitated reason.

I KNOW the last stage of pregnancy sucks, it's exhausting and seems to go on forever, but I promise you will not be pregnant forever.

1st of all I can't believe your still working!!! Your crazy! Have you been doing major walking?? They told me 3 days before I went into labor that I was to check into the hospital on Monday at the butt crack of dawn and they were gonna give me Cervidil. Wait till later at night and give me more and then start Pit the next day. I didn't want to be induced so I walked like crazy Sat and started having Contractions that night. Maybe that will help?

I'd try and hold out, I know how much it sucks but if you're not dilated then the gel can take days before working and they wont start you on anything until your cervix is ripe enough. Also keep in mind that being induced can go good or bad.

I was induced with Alissa and went on my own with Chris and let me tell you, the pain was worse with Alissa and my contractions was one on top of the other, I didn't get very much resting time between. Even though I was induced for medical reasons and it did go smooth I still wish I didn't have to have it done.

Good luck with whatever you choose! I can't wait to meet your little girl!

Before I say this know I love you.Just make sure you know what your gonna let happen to you a 1500% and your 1700% sure you want to do this.

I was induced at 41wks, I wasnt dialated but was apparntly having slow contrax. I dont know if i didnt dilate because i had polyhydromnisois and she kept bobbing out or what but I wish i had stood my ground and opted to wait and see if she chose to come on her own.
My induction ended with me going under genral ansethetic and having a c-section.
I will always be filled with lots of what ifs and I cant change what happend.
So I am saying this with some experience, I know your gonna be fed up, your nearly 40 wks pregnant - thats normal. It just sucks your still having to work.

Yes Amy I'm still working. I only get so much time paid time for maternity leave (6 weeks) and need ALL of those 6 weeks for Lani. So I dont want to go on leave until she's here and I cant really afford to take off without pay.

My moms here and she said that we're going to walk like crazy. She knows nothing about induction so she's trying to get this baby out ASAP before she leaves. She had me a week early (I'm her 1st) and a few of my aunts had their 1st a week early, so she was hoping that I'd have Lani a week early too but thats not happening. She did say that we were going to do a lot of walking around while she's here though.

My next appt is Monday, if I havent progressed by then, I'm schedule an induction.

If i were you, with not being dilated, i wouldn't go ahead and get induced since it can lead to C-section which is gonna lead to a long recovery, a scar, pain, uncomfortableness, possible not feeling like your bonded with your child, etc. If there's a medical reason for being induced then by all means!

I was 2cms, and 80% effaced when I was induced with just pitocin due to a heart condition that developed during pregnancy -- my heart was being overstressed so induction was the way to go. It took 23 long hours, of which i went 18 without an epi. I ended up getting VERY swollen on the pit, and peeing every 30 minutes was not fun when trying to rest. I was bound to my bed (or ball next to the bed), had to have an IV (obviously) and was just uncomfortable.

If I didn't have the heart condition pop up I woulda muttled through. (although in the end not going overdue was good cause I woulda given birth to an 8.5-9 pounder and my 7pound 14ozer tore me, and sometimes i STILL hurt down there.

Also keep in mind, you will be pressed into having a c-section if they break your water early and your not progressing the way THEY want.

Hope that helps :-)

I'm totally talking out of my a.s.s. right now since I haven't btdt, but I would wait. You would be increasing your chances for a c-section as your doctor said, which would really suck since you have limited maternity leave. If I were you I would want it to suck now while Lani isn't here, not later when you are trying to enjoy your time with her. Will you have a lot of people to come by and help you if you do end up having a c-section?

I just read this, you might find it interesting. I just worry that little Kalani might not be done cooking yet and that she'll come when she's ready. Put that with the hazards of induction medication. I want to make sure you're making an educated decision. *Hugs* I hope you can hang in there.

My induction with Gemma did go smoothly (if you consider pit/stadol/epidural/episiotomy smooth) but it was more painful than it needed to be and I KNEW I needed to be up and moving but they wouldn't let me. I couldn't get the contraction monitors taken off even to pee. And I was 5CM when they started pit. Knowing what I know now I would NOT have an induction even at 5CM let alone with no progress.

I know how much those last days suck. I remember them all too well. One of my favorite memories from that time is going to Walmart at 40+1 weeks pregnant and having the man in front of me at check out ask, "When are you due?" I said, "Yesterday" and he almost fell down. I laughed for a good bit and then went home and cried. I was miserable, tired, huge, hot, uncomfortable, swollen and everything else 'bad' about pregnancy. A big part of that is why I said I didn't want any more children for a year or two after Gem's birth.

What I wish I had known was that, because I was drugged out of my gourd on Stadol, I wouldn't feel myself when she was born. And because of that I wouldn't feel like she was really mine. I didn't bond with Gemma at ALL when she was a baby. I took care of her out of responsibility, not love. I really believe that if I hadn't gone through all those interventions that I might have a closer relationship with my daughter.

That's my story and it may or not have anything in common with yours if you do choose induction. Honestly (and I know that my opinion does not matter to your decision one bit) I would never be induced again. It just wasn't worth all the hell during recovery (doctor did an episiotomy because he wanted to get her out quicker and I was already numb from the epi) and trying to make myself love this baby that didn't seem like mine and then feeling like a horrible mother because of the guilt.

I hope whatever you choose works out the best for you and Lani and you have a breezy labor and gorgeous baby in a few days!

You all dont know how much help you are to me informing me of your induction stories (good and bad). It definitely helps me to think about this with a clearer head.

I do fear c-section, if I do end up getting one (due to induction or not) my job gives me an extra 2 weeks of paid vacation. But its not really worth the extra 2 weeks.

I have a few things that I want to try before my appt on Monday (they're going to do a NST). They wont let me go past 41 weeks anyway b/c of risk to the fetus.

Alice - I'm pretty sure of my due date since I know when I O'ed (definitely before I thought I was going to O... yeah definitely an oops) and I got my faint 10 days later. I think at the most, it might be MAYBE 2 days off.

So ladies, I'm trying to hold off... Sooo bad... I'm trying! I really am!!!

I think you should just do what you feel is best for you ... wether thats holding off or asking for an induction.

I was induced with both mine, I had the gel twice with Ryan (no pain before broke waters) and then they broke my waters and he was born an hour later ... very quick and very intense. Went into full blown contractions as soon as waters broke. Gas and air full hour and he was a ventouse delivery.

With Chloe had it once, 6 hours later broke waters (no pain in the 6 hours) and she was born an hour and 18 minutes later ... her stronger contractions came in slowly so had time to adjust and get used to the strength of them .. had gas and air for about half an hour.

So both mine were very quick and intense and I already know tha tnext time I will be opting for an induction at 38 weeks x

To know your risk of c/s you need to know your Bishop score. Not all inductions are evil. But most inductions are harder labor and recovery (c/s or not).

I had an induction both times with no pit, just the gel and having my water broken. I had easy 8 hour labors but I was dilated to 2 centimeters and 80% effaced both times. Now my middle sister and my SIL had inductions like mine and ended up with c-sections. I personally am going to try to avoid an induction this time but it for whatever reason I get one my midwives will do it the exact same way my previous OBs did Good luck Chelle!!
