Are they necessary? It was brought up in my DDC and got me wondering. I've never even heard of them so i obviously don't have one. I want my baby to be as safe as possible but also don't want to buy too many unnecessary things. Should I get one?

It's most certainly not a neccessity, so you can go ahead and wait and see if you want it.
With that said, I have the AngelCare and I LOVE it. It's one of my best baby purchases so far. It gives me so much peace of mind that it was well worth the $99. I just wish I had not bothered getting a sound only monitor, which is now packed away in the basement. We moved Jaxon into his own room when he was 10 weeks old because our room was way too noisy for him, and he is a belly sleeper (something I said would never happen), and I was terrified something would happen to him and I wouldn't know it. I use it every night and at every nap too. I believe Michelle, Shannon (Matthew's mommy) and Erin also use one.

Ive never used one, but baby is always in with us till they can sit up on their own. if your going to put him in his own room earlier than that - I would say go for it just for a peace of mind

I have one too. The same one that Jessie has. I didn't think it was needed until after Jenna was born. She has been in her crib in her room since bringing her home.
But at about 5 weeks, I realized she was such a horrible sleeper b/c she hated being on her back. So I started putting her to sleep on her tummy which made me a nervous reck. I bought the Angel Care monitor and then I had peace of mind knowing she is ok plus we both finally got some sleep.
We've had some false alarms with it b/c she is tiny and moves to the corners of the bed...but even so, I use it every night and for naps and I love it. Even my DH who thought it was going to be a waste is glad we bought it.

It seems like one of those things you can do with out but if you buy it or recieve it as a gift, you're glad you have it!

We got the Angel Care monitor when Matthew was a couple months and we gave in to letting him tummy sleep. It really gave me peace of mind. I think it can help if you are a nervous mommy and/or you have a tummy sleeper.

I don't know if they even had these with Gem. I automatically woke up to check on her every hour or two anyway. If she didn't wake me up then I would wake up in a panic and check on her. Obviously she was always fine! I don't think they are at all necessary as long as your baby isn't high risk for SIDS.

We co-sleep so this isn't something we would need. But I'm also not the kind of mom that's constantly worried she isn't breathing or something, so for ME it would be a waste of money. I think your best bet would be to wait until he's born, and then if you feel like it would give you some peace of mind, spend the money.

Before Reid was born I just KNEW that I would be one of those moms who freaked out about their baby not breathing in the middle of the night. Just thinking about it made me nervous.
....once he was actually here?? I was definitelly NOT one of those moms. I can't really explain it. I just had this gut feeling that everything was okay and although I checked on him a lot, I rarely got nervous (only a few times when he slept through the night out of the blue! lol). He was also not a tummy sleeper so I suppose that helped. He slept next to us in a co-sleeper until he could roll around a lot.
Something that I DID do to prevent SIDS? Constantly had a fan on, even in the winter. When he was in our room we had a fan on in there...when he moved to his crib, I moved the fan in there.

Bre, how does a fan prevent SIDS? I've never heard that. Obviously, we all know about not smoking in the house/around baby, trying not to tummy sleep, no stuffed animals/quilts, etc. Maybe I need to re-research though! I've never heard that a fan can help!

It helps to prevent baby from overheating and keeps air circulating so baby is less likely to re-breathe significant amounts of carbon dioxide.

Thanks for the info. I'll just wait until he's born and go from there. The fan seems like a good idea!

I have a friend who bought one and she had a very active baby, even when they were first born, so he was constantly moving off of the monitor and setting it off! It gave my poor friend a heart attack almost every night or two because of this!
I never used one, but Xander slept with us til he was well over 3 months old. After that, like Bre, I just kind of knew everything was alright. If he slept longer or differently some nights I usually woke up and would go check on him.

Lauren, tell your friend to turn up the sensitivity. I was getting false alarms every night because Jaxon would scoot off the mat. Michelle A. very nicely informed me to turn the sensitivity to 2.5. Since then I have had zero false alarms even when he is on the complete opposite end of the crib from the sensor.
