I feel horrible now for letting J.J cry last night! He has been crying in pain!! Here's what happened today at his ENT appointment we waited NINE weeks for to see the best of the best pediatric ENT's.
So, we go in and I give her his history -- 5 ear infections in 3 months, the 3 different antibiotics that never worked, the coughing/congestion or just coughing that he has. I told her i thought maybe he had a dust allergy since after I washed every piece of fabric in the house his cough subsided. (Apparently just a coincidence)
While there, she tells me she hears abnormal "stridors" on inhalation. J.J for the last, Oh i don't know....2-4 weeks makes this gasping breathing sound (well what we thought was whenever he got all excited.). She then started asking about his cough some more, i told her how since he was 3 weeks old he has this on and off cough. I told her i've never heard him make this sound before and he snores a little. She tells me that she needs to look at this laynx with a scope because there could be a host of things that can cause stridors including tumors. So, she looks and tells me everything looks ok except.... and i quote:
"He has the most severe case of acid reflux I have seen in an infant in a very very long time".
Apparently, his throat was red and so inflamed that she believe this has been the cause of his cough since this started when he was 3 weeks old. She was disapointed that none of the other doctors we saw were able to pick this up -- that the cough should have been an indicator to refer us to an ENT LONG ago or to at least try Zantac to rule out acid reflux.
My poor baby refuses to sleep because his throat is on fire because he has horrible acid reflux. No wonder he just wants to cuddle with his mommy some nights.
We are starting him on the max dose of Axid twice a day. She said if he does not seem better in a month, we're gonna switch to prevacid.
My poor baby.
I am so angry that the other ENT we saw, or his pediatrician could not figure this out. The first ENT told me that he coughs and has congestion cause hes allergic to something (most likely our pets) and the tubes were the answer for us for his ears. (Obviously no to both) Our Ped pretty much told us the same thing about his cough and congestion (she was wrong too!) but told us to see the chiropractor for his ears (at least that worked). And now here we are, 9 months in life and my poor baby is just NOW being diagnosed with something that should have been diagnosed MANY MONTHS ago. More so now then ever so I believe these doctors are just out to make a buck. "Oh well, come back in 2 weeks and we'll see if that cough is better... oh no not better? Hmm lets check again in 2 weeks...."
My poor baby's throat is all damaged from the acid reflux.
And the ENT said that he is definitely NOT allergic to our pets. I wonder how many people get rid of their pets on a "idea' from their doctor instead of actually digging further for an ACTUAL answer?
Arg so angry! But so happy that we have a diagnosis, that my baby will feel better soon (need to remove acidic foods from his diet.. he loves pasta and tomatoes... , and that he will start STTN again once he feels better with the meds.

Awww... poor baby... I am so sorry you're only getting this diagnosis now, after so many months of pain and suffering. Hopefully the medication will make a huge impact and you will all be able to get some rest at night.

I cant beleive they are only picking this up now - after 8 months
Its rather sad that paid professinals with years of medical traning have missed this one more then one occasion and on your FIRST visit to this ENT it gets picked up almost straight away.
Is there someone you can file a complaint with so nobody else has to go through what you've gone through?
Also - dont blame your self. We're supposed to trust medical professinals and the answers they give us. You've done your best for JJ. You where not know he had acid reflux - espeically as you was told he was most likely to be allergic to something.
At least know you know what the problem is and you can get on and help make him better. I hope his medicine kicks in ASAP! xx

Oh wow! I'd be HOT too! Here you were thinking that he was just having trouble sleeping and detaching himself from mommy and you trying different methods to get him to sleep yet he has major acid reflux that 2 different docs couldnt figure out.
I thought that checking the throat was standard at check ups? Thank goodness for this ENT doc.

When it comes to acid reflux, the only way to check for it is to put a scope down the throat and look. Since he was making this breathing noise and had chronic coughing she wanted to look and what she found was acid reflux. :-(
This was his first trip to this ENT. He saw a different ENT that I did not like in February.

Don't feel like a bad mommy, the doctors should have figured it out long ago. Atleast now you have a doctor that knows what they are looking for, hopefully JJ will get to feeling better soon.

Poor JJ. It sucks that the other docs were not more thorough in their exams to pick up on this. I hope these new meds work and that JJ will be all better soon. I feel so bad for him. Don't beat yourself up. You were doing everything you could to find out what was wrong and you never stopped. There's no way you could have know but the doctor's should have paid more attention and not just brush off some of your concerns.

Oh my gosh, how awful! Don't feel bad, you had no idea. I HATE doctors! I swear half of them don't know what they're talking about LoL! They almost KILLED my mom when I was 14 because they didn't know what they were talking about. I'm so glad you got an answer and your little guy should be happy and feeling much better in no time! ((HUGS))

poor baby. I hope this diagnosis and treatment finally have him feeling better. Acid reflux can be devastatingly painful, but luckily is easy to treat. Just takes awhile in advanced stages. (i was a pediatric reflux patient but wasn't diagnosed until i was old enough to advocate for myself.)
