Four of my friends, DF and myself are booked in to do a two day hike next weekend. It's 16.5km all together and will take about 8 hours each day to walk. It's really hilly and extremely steep in some places, and we'll have to carry a bag with our sleeping bags, food for the two days, clothes etc.

Should I be trying to do this at 5 weeks pregnant?! I do go to they gym 4-5 times a day, so guess I'm okay fitness wise, but I am quite crampy at the moment and am not too sure about carrying the bag (it has a strap that fits over my abdomen). Also, I'm not ready to tell my friends about my pregnancy either...

The other option that has been suggested is to catch a boat ferry to part way through the track, then walk 2.5 hours to the hut. Then do only one 8 hour day.

I would think it would be ok, although I don't really know. My cousin did the west coast trail when she was like 9 weeks, and that is like a week or something crazy, and she was fine. I say just do what your heart tells you, if it makes you uncomfortable than don't do it!!!

I would do it! Especially since you are fit already and its a great thing to keep fit as much as possible during pregnancy. Just make sure you take in loads of water so you don't get dehydrated.

I would say you will be fine to do it you feel comfortable .. a friend of mine did a marathon here where she was 10 weeks .. granted she walked but she was fine x

Just as long as you have plenty of water so you don't get dehydrated and your fit and healthy anyway then I see no reason why you wouldn't be ok to do it x

As for the strap thing ... baby is pretty well cushioned in there so at your point in pregnancy now thats nothing to worry about x

But yeah go ahead and do it unless of course you don't feel comfortable doing so

i agree that you're pretty fit as it is and that you should be ok as long as you stay well hydrated. I can totally understand being scared of that though, i totally was afraid to work out. but the other side of it is, if anything were to happen, i don't think it would be because of the hike, kwim? oh and lastly, that hike sounds AWESOME! When I come visit you will u take me? are you going to take lots of pictures?

Shouldn't be a problem at all. Now, if you were, like, 7 months pregnant, no way in heck would I suggest attempting it! lol.

As long as it is an activity level you are used to I think you are fine. And what the heck?? No BFP thread??! I had no idea you were pregnant! Congratulations!

I don't think it would hurt anything as long as you stay hydrated. I would take a break too if you started cramping. The backpack should be fine, because baby is safe in your pelvis right now. The only thing I'm worried about is the cramping. It always freaked me out and made me want to lay down, even though nothing came of it.

I spoke to DF last night and since it's only an over night hike, he said he'd carry the bag and make sure he stayed with me the whole time (he is like a fricken mountain goat and takes off, leaving me to wonder along on my own!).

I wouldn't say I'm hugely fit, but I do go to the gym most days before work as I work as a Graphic Designer so am sitting on my butt all day!

Sar - We have some aweoms walks in NZ, will so have to take you if you ever make it over here

Yeah, my BFP post was the 'Tashas TTC Thread'! Sorry, I have a strange sense of humor! I was going to start the thread on CD1, but AF never showed up!!
