Obviously drinking alcohol while pregnant is a fairly major no-no, but what about small amounts in cooking?

Say, for example, tomorrow I want to do Lamb Shanks in a Red Wine and Rosemary Sauce (in the slow cooker for 8 hours). It feeds 4-5 people and is suppose to have 1/2 a cup of red wine.

Good idea or not?!

I believe it's totally fine. Cooking it will remove all the alcohol.

Yeah it's my understanding that all alcohol burns out while cooking, so its fine.

the girls, the alcohol evaporates during the cooking process. We recently shared recipes on the UK board and one of which was a meat joint in a slow cooker with wine in it... it was for a family of 5 (mum, dad, 3 kids), I didn't know about the alcohol evaporating so couldn't understand why kids could eat this Then it was explained to me So yeah, perfectly fine

agree with the pps!

plus the whole thing about no alcohol during pregnancy is based on the fact that excessive intake of alcohol during pregnancy causes Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. No safe lower limit has been identified so they just recommend you avoid it altogether to cover their bums, but i dont think a small glass of wine every so often is going to harm the baby. i forget where i read that........but i swear i read about it somewhere! my nephew was exposed to all kinds of things in utero (beers/wine every so often, excessive drinking with massive hangovers, drugs, smoking...) and he is perfectly fine....so i think cooking with wine should not pose a problem at all!

I agree with Sara, although I have abstained from margarita's (very hard but I did it LOL!!) a glass of wine once or twice a week wont hurt. I think I read its not suppose to be over 4oz....

1/2 a cup of wine split that far wouldn't do anything anyways. enjoy your dinner!

(i even have half a glass of champagne now and then)
