What is there to do? Is it a fun little getaway?

I am wanting to go there for a long weekend for our anniversary, we wanted to do a beach vacation but with all thats happening in the Gulf I dont want to do that, and I dont know of any other nice beaches to go to (I've only been to places in and around the Gulf) so if anyone knows of another nice beach to go to let me know as well!

Thanks girls!

I grew up in Chicago and think it is an awesome town, but it's definitely going to be quite different from a beach vacation. There is sooo much to do, Navy Pier, Shedd Aquarium, Lincoln Park Zoo, shopping on Michigan Ave, ball game at Wrigley, etc etc. Depending on when you go, there are all kinds of awesome festivals that go on throughout the summer - Taste of Chicago, BluesFest, JazzFest, RibFest, Wrigley Summerfest and on and on.

That being said, if you're still wanting a beach vacay, what about the Atlantic side of Florida? There's Daytona, Cocoa Beach, Palm Beach, and of course Miami just to name a few. Just a thought!

Yea, thats what I was wondering if anyone had been to those places in Florida or anywhere else that wasnt affected. I just dont want to go somewhere and hate it again (as we did with Cancun YUCK!) I definitely dont want to do Miami, have you been to any of those other places? Which do you recommend? Cocoa Beach sounds cute!

I have just been wanting to go to Chicago for a few months now, its so close and we could just take a train or drive. I think it would be fun, but then again on the other hand I would love a relaxing beach vacation. So im okay with doing either, just cant decide!

I've never been to Miami but of the other three Cocoa Beach is my favorite. Daytona is a little... redneck... for my taste and there was more to do in Cocoa Beach than West Palm Beach. Cocoa Beach is beautiful and the water is warm and amazing. Cape Canaveral is just a little up the road and definitely worth checking out.

Kate listed the most prominent things to do. I personally love the festivals. Taste of Chicago runs over the 4th of July weekend and is amazing. There's tons of food, live music, and fireworks. If you're in a sight seeing mood, the Shedd Aquarium is a must see... definitely spring for the dolphin show! Also, the Museum of Science and Industry and the Art Institute are well worth the time. For the best view of the city, don't go up the Sears (Willis) Tower... go to the Hancock Center. The elevator ride up is free and the drinks at the bar on the top are still less expensive than the entrance fee for Sears Tower. Although if you like heights and you want to go on a see-through glass deck, you'll have to go to the Sears Tower. Navy Pier has some decent food and drinks, and sometimes live music. A boat tour of the coastline or a river boat architecture tour are both fun.

In terms of beach vacations, what about Myrtle Beach?

Chicago is amazing but I'm from there so I'm biased. Lake Michigan is really nice though. Check out the Indiana State Dunes park if you go.

The main things were listed already. I loved Chicago and really enjoyed visiting the Art Institute of Chicago as well.
