DH just fed Charlotte a bottle of breastmilk and something weird happened. When she was done the bottle was coated with what almost looked like curdled milk, but it was just fat. When I washed the bottle I noticed the coating wasn't water soluble. It wasn't curdled because it smelled fine. It was like the fat separated and didn't want to mix back in or something. I know it separates in the fridge and we always shake it up to get it mixed up again. This has never happened in the past. Anyone ever seen this kind of consistency change before? Charlotte is not acting like she has an upset tummy or anything.

Sounds completely normal! I would get rings of milk fat on my bottles and sometimes a whole coating after baby ate. It's because it's not ermm... pasturized or something like that! It always seperates. Even shaking it wont make it blend together. I'm trying to recall but I don't think you're supposed to shake it.. maybe just swish it a bit.
Anyway, ya it's normal

Yep, its fine. I heat mine up in the bottle warmer which seems to 'melt' the fatty bits off the sides so they can be mixed in. Shaking the milk destroys some of the immune components, if I remember right.

Ditto to the others. It is completely normal. Maybe you had more hindmilk in that bottle, which is why it left more of a coating then you've seen.

Ditto what Jessie said. Warm it first to mix it in. If it stays cool, the fat will stick to the sides.
Also good to warm the bags of frozen milk (not just thaw), before putting the in bottles or the fat will stick to the bag.

I wonder why it has never looked griddy like that before. I just fed her a bottle from the same batch and it looked normal.
How did I not know that I'm not supposed to shake it??! I'm so glad you all told me that, we've been shaking all her bottles. Thank you!

Ditto everyone else.
I didn't know until Lochy not to shake it but I never did anyway. For some reason it just didn't feel right to shake bm bottles. I felt the same way about microwaving it, I never knew with Liam not to microwave to heat it up but I never did because it didn't seem right. I think I'm just weird though. lol

Totally normal. Just shake it gently to let it blend together. Vigorous shaking of breastmilk apparently breaks down something but I can't remember what that something is.
