I think Charlotte is getting baby eczema. She has broken out on her face and some on her arms and legs. Anyone have some home remedies? My poor baby. Hopefully hers isn't as stubborn as mine. I get it on my hands and the only thing that works to help it is Rx strength steroid creams. That is the last thing I want to put on my daughter's face, I can already see the permanent damage the steroid cream has done on my hands!

Matthew used to have it but doesn't anymore (and I have it too) so there is hope she may just have for a little while. For his I kept trying different lotions (Vanicream is a good one) but it took hydrocortisone to clear it up. I used 2.5% (rx) and some other steriod cream I got an Rx for. I didn't like using them but nothing else was working (tried all kinds of sensitive skin lotions and do think it's best try them first) and once I got his skin cleared up it has stayed cleared up!

my dh has it and i get him this cream by DermaE called Psorzema Creme, its apparently all natural blah blah blah, he likes it and has used it for a while. it's not chemically at all as far as i can tell and i would put it on a baby. if you have a whole paycheck...i mean whole foods, near you i believe you'd be able to get it there!

Amara has it and I use Aveeno baby and E45 with 10% urea (the latter was recommended by her pediatric dermatologist). If she has a major flare-up from heat or allergy, I have to use the steroid cream prescribed by the doctor. I don't do this unless it is absolutely necessary.

I moisturize her entire body 2 times a day and sometimes more.

I have also heard that plain old vaseline (plain one) works but I've never tried this option. I think it'll be hard handling a greasy, slippery baby considering I do the full body moisturize.

Is this the same as baby acne? Logan had it pretty bad, it was really red, and it cleared up with time.

Eucerin Cream is what we have to use on Seamus' eczema
When I was younger I was told to use cetaphil lotion on mine, never did though so cant say how it works but I know Eucerin helps.

We used to use eucerin too but cetaphil is the same kind of thing only not greasy like eucerin. Still I would use it sometimes before bed.

I got some OTC Aveeno hydrocortisone cream, lotions just weren't doing the trick. She was so fussy last night, more fussy than I have ever seen her, and I think it was because her face is all broken out. Of course crying only made it worse. I know it has to be itchy for her. We had her sleeping in her own cosleeper because the heat from sleeping on my chest only makes it worse. I think that's why it started in the first place. It looks better this morning, but that doesn't mean much, it seems to get better and worse throughout the day. Hopefully the OTC stuff will heal her, though, and once she is healed if we stop letting her sleep on our chest so much hopefully it won't recur very often.

On the up side of this, since she didn't sleep on my chest in the living room, DH and I slept in the same bed for the first time since she was born! I've been sleeping on the couch for 6 weeks, and our couch is SO uncomfortable and I'm not a back sleeper, so that was a welcome change. Granted, we had her in her cosleeper between us and she didn't sleep quite as well as she does on my chest, but still, it was wonderful! Hopefully she will get better at it.

Actually from what you just described it sounds like Lila when she was about a month old. It was a heat rash and it would come and go based on how hot she was and with sleeping on my chest. The calendula lotion helped but what helped the most was wiping her down a few times a day with a cool wet washcloth. And by the time she was 8 or 9 weeks she didn't get the heat rash anymore. Now its super hot here today (like 100 degrees) and I noticed shes getting a little rashy but wiping her down is really helping and its not nearly as bad as when she was little. I think it was just her little body getting used to that kind of heat for the first time and now she's more used to it. I hope Charlotte feels better!

Oh, I've tried the Aveeno hydrocortisone cream myself and it didn't really do anything for me. But other OTC hydrocortisone creams work for me.

I will try the cold compresses too. Whether it is a heat rash or eczema, cold compresses will help. What is calendula lotion? Is there a brand I can look for?

Her face is looking better overall today, fingers crossed it stays that way!

Ugh, it got worse again this evening. I think I might have to get the doctor involved. I don't want it to get too bad.

A question for anyone who has dealt with this... how long did it take your baby's eczema to clear up when using OTC lotions and meds?

Lochy's is more seasonal, it flares up in the fall and winter and I have to keep him lubed up the entire time. Mine is year round and I have to use OTC hydrocortisone cream everyday.

I used to nanny for a little girl who had bad eczema and I had to use OTC hydrocortisone as well as lotion a couple times a day, every day or she would be unbearably itchy. One of her first words was "itchy cream" the poor thing.

I think going to the dr. is probably a good idea, you don't want it getting bad for her.

Hello

My son has eczema.. He's been battling this problem since he was 3 months old and it was vary bad. At the age of 8 months old, he still has it but not that bad since it has warmed up.. What I would suggest is Vanicream.. But get the Vanicream with the pump because the pump will keep the germs out of the lotion. Germs (like Staph infections) can cause the eczema to get worse (A.J was tested for this too and was postive for it in his nose) Vanicream was recommended by our Dermatologists. What worked best for me was giving him Bleach bath.. If your Ped knows about eczema, he/she will tell you how to do it.. The bleach helps kill the bacteria in the flared up skin. Another thing you can do is put Oat Meal in a sock and give her a Oat meal bath. This can help with the itching. You just pat her with the sock. You can try steroid creams, but keep in mind sometimes they may not work.. With A.J, he was on Aclovate, Desonide, Fluticasone, and Triamcinolone.. These only worked for a short time.. I eventually gave up and used the steroid creams vary sparingly. I just kept applying Vanicream 1-2 times an hour.. Hydration is the key.. I went to 6 Peditricians and only one doctor told me what the Dermatologists told me to do.. I was vary surprised that the other doctors never told me about the bleach bath and vanicream,etc..

Amazon.com: Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream with Pump Dispenser: Beauty

I finally got a hold of some calendula oil.. So far it hasn't done anything. But I'm willing to try any recommendations..

I know someone recommend Urea.. There is vary little study on the lotion for infants.. I only used it once on my sons cradle cap (eczema mixed in with craddle cap) and it seemed to burn him the second time I applied.. I asked on of my Pharmacisits to look up to see if it's safe for babies and when I learned there's no documentation on babies, I stopped using it..

My son eczema is caused by genetics and his skin is vary sensitive.. His is more difficult to control.. It noticed it has eased up since it has warmed up.. But then he developed Asthama, which I knew was coming since eczema usually leads to asthma.

Here's a few article on bleach baths.. I was a little nervous to try when the Dermatologists suggested it to me, but once the Ped told me to do it.. I tried it and it helped.. I only added 1/4 of a tsp to his baby bath.. Vary small amount and I only did it a few times..

Bleach baths may help kids with eczema

Kids' Eczema Successfully Treated With Diluted Bleach Baths

I hope this helps you in some way.. I pray your little girls gets better soon..

Edit to add:

Make sure you wash all of your clothes in those allergy free laundry soaps.. Her having contact on you can cause the flare ups too..

Another thing that might be triggering it is a food allergy.. Nows the time to check to see if milk is causing it.. We tried Nutramagin for 8 weeks to see if A.J was sensitive to milk, but he wasn't.. Luckily we did this before he started solid foods.. This help rule out food sensitivities..

Sorry this is so long.. It's been a long 4 months and I know what it's like when your child is suffering and there's nothing you can do to help it get better..

Brayden's was so bad his legs would bleed His derm said to only wash in all free and clear or an alternative such as that, we used eucerine (spelled wrong grrr) cream and lotion, only bathed him in phisoderm and he wasn't to be touched with soaps at all. He could play in the bath, water only then I was to bathe him then take him out immediately. No baby lotions at all, curel was also rec'd to us by the derm. Then she gave us a rx cream to use on his legs and told me not to put the steriod cream on his face because it would make it worse on his face. So I'd put the eucerine cream or lotion on it.

Oh and she told me to use cetaphil to wash in also.

It really depends on what triggers the eczema. If you can find out the triggers, you can get it cleared within a few days. For Amara, it's heat, cow's milk, rice and too much banana and citrus fruits. Those are the triggers I know for certain. She wears mainly sleeveless, light clothing to help with the heat and if it's very hot, then it's AC or swimming pool in the yard. For the foods, I just cut them out.

I only wash her clothing in ALL free and clear and I add bicarbonate soda to it.

I honestly would suggest seeing a pediatric dermatologist. He/She is the best one to correctly diagnose the problem and the severity. She may need an allergy test as eczema can be triggered from a variety of allergies. You may also be able to get a fast acting steroid cream to use for a few days and then you can use it very sparingly after that. I only use the cream for Amara with major flare-ups. You can go for months without having to use it once you find the triggers.
