So about 3-4 weeks ago my 2 year old female spayed cat was peeing blood. We took her to the vet and the gave us 2 weeks worth of Clovamox. By the time she was done with the meds she did fine with not peeing blood. Last night she peed on my couch (something she started doing when she was bleeding last time) and it was bloody! What the crap!

So lets rewind to the end of March. We switched the cats from Iams dry food to Blue Buffalo dry food when we got the dog because we had done more research and just decided Blue Buffalo would be better for all except our wallets.. not a big deal. Well now we are starting to wonder if the bloody urine/suspected UTI has something to do with the Blue Buffalo cat food. We switched them over gradually and our 1 1/2 year old male cat is having no symptoms.

I read somewhere to give some wet cat food to help get them to pee more often to hopefully flush their systems, so we started that this morning. We are also thinking of switching them back to Iams to see if that helps.

Any suggestions???

i highy reccomed a raw food diet for pets. My dog had HUGE health problem as a puppy, and by switching her to raw food her constant vomiting, foaming at the mouth, shaking etc all completely stopped and as time goes on her liver tests have been slowly improving. to me feeding raw food to pets that have evolved over millions of years to eat raw food makes a lot more sense than feeding them commercially produced foods. i know a lot of people say there are risks to feeding raw but i have seen firsthand that the benefits far outweigh those risks. i could go on and on about how much i love feeding raw but my coputr is suckigand icant typeproperly. ii get her food from thepet store flash frozen, it costs th same as premium reguar dog food. i think food can be a pets medicine too!

I have no advice to give but I hope whatever it is clears up soon. What did the vet say after the peeing with blood started again? Perhaps you could ask him/her about the food options.

The raw food diet is actually not a good diet because of the risk for e-coli, listeria, salmonella, etc. We treated a dog who was peeing all over the house (some blood in the urine), owner refused to believe it was the raw diet that caused an infection in the kidneys/bladder, then rushed it to the emergency vet (3 weeks later) when it was peeing straight blood only to find out the kidneys were shot from infection. They had to put him down. The owners STILL refused to believe it was an infection from the raw food diet EVEN THOUGH necropsy showed the kidneys had been INFESTED with E-coli. They told the E-Vet that they were WRONG! Blue Buffalo is a VERY good food. I wish I had the money to put my cats on it. (My dog eats special food cause he has gastrointestinal issues). You need to be VERY careful with the raw diet. It is not a diet that is regulated or recommended.

Clavamox does not treat ALL UTI's. Sometimes something stronger is needed. Did your vet look at the urine under a microscope? You cat could have crystals in her urine and need a special urinary diet instead. These crystals can cause bladder stones, so please head back into the vet :-) A simple x-ray would tell your vet if there are large stones, a urine sediment exam would show the presence of crystals.

Good Luck :-)

I ditto Sam, the clavamox probably just didn't wipe out all of the bacteria. And raw diets really scare me too, lots and lots of bad stories come out of the raw foods.

I'm no expert like Sam .. but I have my cat on cat biscuits and cat meat .. if she just has the buiscuits she becomes VERY thirsty ... so she now tends to have meat in the mornings and buscuits at night. So far she seems fine !!!

I have heard also you need wet food to help keep things flushed etc !!!

an added benefit of the raw food diet is that my dog hardly pees or poops at all because all the nutrients are absorbed and less needs to be excreted. she also drinks a lot less water. i probably would have been skeptical of a raw food diet too, but when i tried it i was at my wits end and had literally tried every single kind of kibble or 'wet food', all i can say is i'm so glad i did try it because without it my dog was living a miserable and painful life. not trying to debate that there are certain risks of bacteria, but also want to mention that dogs and cats arent meant to be sterile anyways, once they build up the proper microbial flora in their stomach/guts they are generally equipped to fight off all the 'horror story' bacteria. also as a student of biology, anatomy/physiology, and nutrition feeding raw just makes sense to me

So I added 1/2 a can of wet food to their dry food in the morning and at night. I also added water to it too.. we only saw blood twice over the weekend and not since Saturday so Im hoping that this worked.
