I think it's a great idea! I researched it about a year ago when I was still working. I had a hard time understanding what it all entails to get certified. It's something I'd love to do!

Do IT!!! The world needs more fabulous LC's!!!
After my pregnancy/birth with Nolan, I've decided to train to become a doula.

I think you would be an excellent LC! Actually, I know you would. You've given me so much great advice and support through my BFing struggles. Too bad you live in NJ or I would ask you to come down and practice on me and try to fix our latch problems!

Aw, I'd love to be able to help you, darn world making us all live too far apart!
I've looked into it further and I think I'll do it! Thanks for your support and encouragement!
I looked into becoming a doula too but I don't know logistically how I could swing that. I could be with someone in labor for a long time and then what to do with my kids? I don't know who we could get to watch them at the drop of a hat. I'm more passionate about breastfeeding anyway so I think it'll be a better fit for me anyway.

I too think its a fantastic idea, and so very rewarding! Plus you get to be around n00bs all the time! haha!
I talked about becoming a doula, and DH is really on board with the idea, but like you mentioned Jenn... I don't know what I'd do if I were gone a long time about Lily... I threw the idea at my mom and she said she could watch her for me whenever, so maybe I'll reconsider at some point - but being on call like that is definitely something to consider!

Do it! It would be such a rewarding profession and to play such a large role in public education on something as important as breastfeeding would be so amazing.
I, too, have considered becoming an LC, and a doula. I think I will wait until I am finished having children to consider either one, but I think doula would suit me better, as there are very few doula's and NO MW's around here, so I would be able to make a larger impact.

That's wonderful Jenn!! I wish I had good ones after having Chris and Alissa, none knew I had hypoplastic breasts which sucks, could of saved me a lot of hell and heartache.
I'm going to study to become a midwife(All we have here, no doulas or OBs), I just have to finish my language studies. For jobs like that you still have to become a CN but I'm not sure about a LC, might be same.

I noticed working in a hospital they want you to have your RN as well and I don't want to go to nursing school. Theres other places to work though, not just hospitals, and who's to say I couldn't be independent and work for myself? Its still on the table

not all hospitals want you to have your RN...so keep looking. Also try birthing centers and at home care! I think its a great idea!
Oh and you want to be doulas---- you can get your certification and work with a group of doulas so you can pick your hours of who works when! And if you do it with DONA feel free to ask me questions--thats where I got mine threw!

OH awesome, that is where I want to certify through! There is a workshop in November that I could attend and then start my "clock" of 2 years to get everything done...but I want to have a LOT read/learned/researched before I go so I *hope* that I can get it all done so I feel like I get the most of out of it! Nikki and I will both be ready to go about the same time and we are totally thinking about teaming up.
