What is considered a fever for a newborn? We have a thermometer that says its accurate for armpit testing and she's got about 98.1 according to that. We don't have any petroleum jelly so I can't take temperature rectally.
When did you take your baby out of the house? (We've taken her to the store a couple of times and had to take her to the emergency room for a brief time (about 15 minutes) . Now I'm paranoid that she caught something while we were out. I can't drive so the only way I can get to the store is if Guy takes me. She is 10 days old today. We are limiting any confined space outing from hence forth.
How do you get hard to burp babies to burp? Harper will not burp and then like an hour after feeding she just spits up, and it tends to be a lot of spit up. I feel like we've tried everything and I'm concerned about her not getting enough food because so much of it comes up. Its happened twice today.

A fever is 100.4 (I believe). My SIL told me to add a degree to the temp from the armpit? Her temp seems fine, that's where Lilyan's temp usually is under her arm.
We took Lilyan to Target when she was less than a week old. I am sure as long as no one breathed on her or touched her, she is fine.
Lilyan is a difficult burper too. Make sure to burp after each oz OR after she is done nursing on each side. I sometimes bounce my knee gently and pat her back at the same time. Or I will put her over my shoulder...sometimes I bounce her a little and pat her back. I will also move her from side to side to try and get arm bubbles out. The nurse at the hospital also suggested 'massaging' up her spine to release gas (this hasnt really been successful for us, but it may work for you).

a normal temp for a newborn can go over 100 100.5 is considered normal, anything over that call the pedi. Brayden as a newborn was usually anywhere from 98.9-100.2. You are breastfeeding so that will cut down on illness from the start

Sorry to butt in...
We had a difficult burper too so I thought I'd share my experiences. Put her over your shoulder but with her arms over your shoulder too, but don't hunch her over, try to keep her upright so gravity helps, rub round and round in circles on her back, moreso to her left side (stomach area). According to the baby whisperer, rubbing is better than patting... patting can aggravate spit up because your almost shaking the contents of her lil tummy.
Don't worry about her not getting "enough", she will only eat when she is hungry. Even if she spits up, she will eat again when hungry again. You'll be surprised at how much is digested despite the spit up. Kirsty was very very sicky about an hour after feeds for the first few weeks, it can be to do with them trying to get the mucus up which may have been swallowed during labour/birth. The only way for the mucus to come out of their tummies... is upwards. They can't poop it out. (according to my MW anyway!) Kirsty would be laying in the pram and projectile vomit over the pram, onto the floor. She still gained weight really fast to begin with!

If I remember correctly, for any baby under 3 months you should only be taking the temp rectally if you expect an accurate temp.
We took Lily out the first time at 6 d ays old to her pedi appt, but waited that long only b/c I wasn't up to it. I think our first big adventure was to Target. I always had her in the moby so no one could come up and touch her. Its not cold season and you're BFing, so try not to worry too much about her getting sick.
I never burp Lily... she never really burped or if she did it was on her own. I'm lucky in that she has spit up less than ten times in her whole life though, so burping also wasn't necessary.
Also, breastmilk is digested quickly which is why they eat more often than FF babies... so if she's throwing up a whole hour later, she probably got most of the good stuff anyway. If she keeps throwing up (not just spitting up) then mention it to your pedi, she may be lactose intolerant or something.

over 100 at her age I would call the Dr but only Rectal are "real" temps. If you don't have jelly any lube would work (so ky jelly also), you don't hardly have to use any. To much and it will alter the temp.... I don't use anything with london.
Burping---london wasn't a burper. I set a 15 min max try time for a couple weeks then stopped all together. He never had an issue. But Gripe water is AMAZING for gas issues! It doesn't have the side effect of mylicon (which CAN be constipation).
London was out of the "house" 10 min after the m/w gave me my 24 hr check and said I was ok!

We went out the house as soon as I felt up for it...Having a c/s made me feel not wanting to go out at 1st or if i did we walked so slow! I didnt feel I needed to hide her from anyone because she was born in october so it was cold and she needed to be wrapped up!
As for burping, Mia was a very easy burper, all we had to do was sit her up and she'd let out a loudest burps ever haha

What is considered a fever for a newborn? Anything over 100.5 rectally.
When did you take your baby out of the house? - Immediately, I saw what happened with my nephew when they restricted him from leaving the house or seeing other people -- he cries whenever someone else holds him/looks at him/talks to him/etc. He is afraid of social situations. I was glad with my decision to take him out. We still have never been in a "confined" situation like an airplane or anything. His first restaurant trip I think he was about 3-4 months old?
How do you get hard to burp babies to burp? You should try different positions. Upright and really pat her back. Some babies prefer to be sat up on the knee with your hand holding their chin while being burped. Some want to lay on their stomachs. J.J was a hard burper too but we just needed to burp him for like 10 minutes.

Sorry I didn't answer the other questions. Brayden didn't always burp either. I could lay him on his tummy on my legs and gentle pat and rub and that'd do it. Or I could walk my fingers gently around his tummy in a circle motion and then retry to burp and that'd help.
I took B out the first time at 4wks but it wsan't really in public, and I kept him covered in his carrier. I was told not to take him out for 12 weeks due to his lungs at birth, but that's it.

 on the temp
we took Isabella to Albertsons the day we came home.. when you have 3 kids you dont have time to worry about them being locked away in a sterile environment for weeks on end, KWIM? (shhhh...I even drove home the last few stops we made, since I had to drop my dad off at home...)
burping a hard baby, well...thats a hard one LOL I usually pat up and down her back, then rub, then pat and usually laying her down, then picking her back up will kinda move the air bubble up and out.
