......note to self: DO NOT, unless they are sick/scared/injured, let your toddler sleep in bed with you just because it's the only way you can get them to sleep. I have created a little monster! Last night, I made the mistake of trying to go into Reid's room after he went to sleep just to look at him (he's so cute!) - I went to open his door in one swift motion so it wouldn't squeak, but before he went to sleep he must have been playing with his toys because one of his big race cars was right behind is door and when I opened it, it made a super loud noise and woke him up It was 11pm and he wanted to come downstairs with me, but I was sooo tired. I layed in his bed with him until he fell asleep, but every time I tried to get up, he would wake up and freak out if I started to leave. This went on for nearly an hour. I finally took him to our bed and DH slept on the couch. I got the worst sleep EVER- he is a bed hog and would wake up every 45 mins, sit straight up in bed and look at me just to make sure I was still there- and then proceed to lay on TOP of me.
So yeah....now it's nap time, he's exhaused....almost fell asleep playing with his toys downstairs. I took him up to bed and he tried yanking me down into the bed with him and said, "Mommy naps too" - now he's upstairs throwing a giant fit. I don't want to give in like I did last night because I'm certain it would just make it worse. I can either let him skip his nap, eventually calm himself down, or go and nap with him. All options suck. Just go to sleep, Reid! I don't care about naps really, I don't care if he skips them....I just don't want to create a bad habit for bed time....which I've already done. He's been harder and harder to get to bed for some reason- he's been soooo good for over a year!
Sorry, just had to vent.....

your just going to have to stick it out. #1 mistake was laying down with him. Which is ok, but they need to understand there are times that mommy can lay down, but others (like now) that they need to be the big boy and go to sleep. Dont promise him something for napping either (now I've created the monster, but thats a whole nuther story) first few times, just go in, put him back in bed and say love you. If he continues, then dont say a word, go in, and lay him back down, and walk out. Its tough love, but he will realize this isnt a game if you nip it in the butt now. Worked with both my older 2 kids. they know momma doesnt mess around with bedtime or naptime! GL!!

Sorry Bre If you really want the sleeping to go back to the way it was you'll probably have to stay strong and not give in to the fits at all - cold turkey....he'll go back sooner than later I bet! Good luck!!!

haha! Oh, Bre.. be glad you are not me. I have Oliver on me each day for his nap time and he flops all over me all night long. He is a bed hog, I wake up several times per night, if I get up to pee he starts crying because he wakes up when I get out of the bed, he nurses on and off all night usually too. But I do love having him next to me so it's worth it.
I would stick to your guns or he will get use to it and it will be a hard habit to break!

I know how that is even though I don't have a 2yr old or a close to 2yr old. Seamus wouldn't sleep for almost the entire time I was pregnant, unless someone was sleeping with him. And Kieran wakes up 1-2x's a night(usually 2) and wont go back to sleep unless I let her CIO and I sleep down stairs, or I put her in bed with me(then I can't move at all or she wakes)
Sleeping sucks lol

Awww Bre! I don't think you have established a habit just yet. I think you just have to hold your ground on it and I bet it will pass much easier than it would if you had done it regularly.
I hope one day you will think back and giggle when you think of him flopping on top of you to sleep and bolting up randomly to make sure you are still there. I'm sorry but that is cute! I know it isn't funny when you are going through it, but it is cute.

Well, I caved and let him get up from his nap. Guess who fell asleep on the couch at 6pm while I was taking a bath? Reid! Dh had to wake him up. He was tired and he DID need that nap Bed time was AWFULLLLL. I had Dh try putting him down since he's not as "attached" to him when it comes to things like this. Reid proceeded to scream for 30 mins and eventually busted down his gate and went running into our room, climbed on our bed and demanded, "Naps with mommy!" and when I tried putting him back to bed he screamed more and more. I was holding him and trying to talk/reason with him and he was literally shaking/convulsing DH asked, "Should I call my mom and see what she would do?" I said yes, I was desperate! She said that he might not be feeling well/teething and that you never know, so to bring him downstairs, get him some warm milk, read a book, and maybe some ibuprophen (he is teething, got 2 new teeth last week). Well, I did that - we read 3 books which put him in a better mood, he took his medicine happily, and I explained to him about bed time. Guess who went to bed happily and without protest??? REID! Thank God.....I still feel sick/shaky from the experience I hate it when he gets so upset. This was the most upset I think I have ever seen him Praying that things are easier now!

I'm so sorry it was so horrible I'm glad he eventually went to sleep well though. Hopefully this is the last time. It really sounds like your MIL was right though, that he was teeting/feeling unwell. I think you did the right thing in giving him comfort and stories. Your a wonderful mommy.

You know what I bet he is upset from the move. Landen was not himself after we moved at all! He was fine the first few days other then he'd wake up here and there, but then he was just awful and very clingy for about twoish weeks. It was so sad !!!
I'm glad your horrible night ended well! I hope tonight will go better!

Awww poor little guy, I'm sorry he got so upset, that must have been hard to see. I'm glad you were able to find a way to calm him and get him to bed though. How has he been the past couple of days?
