I found out today that I have gestational diabetes I'll have a class on it soon and will begin checking blood sugars. Now they are talking possible induction if he gets too big. Both my girls were just shy of 8lbs in the 40th week and they induction babies. I was really hoping to avoid induction this time... of course, the one time I actually CHOOSE to avoid it, it may be necessary. Feeling kinda bummed right now. It definitely explains why I've been feeling so badly. Oh yeah, and they said I have high blood pressure and I've been contracting 4-6 times an hour... this pregnancy is HORRIBLE. I'm not one to usually complain about things but I'm so frustrated and miserable and I just want my body back

Sorry to hear Hopefully they can get you under control as to not trigger any other issues that can come with GD... Take it easy and just try to relax for you and baby. Bless up.

I dont want to scare you but 99% of Gestational Diabetes pregnancy's are induced. The reasoning is because the placenta doesn't hold out as long as it does in a normal pregnancy. But you'll also most likely get more u/s's at the end. I had an u/s once a week from 34weeks till birth with both kids for the GD and the reason is to watch the growth, watch lung maturity(catch 22, GD babies lungs develop slower then non-GD babies), and how much fluid (GD pregnancy's tend to have more fluid).

Like I said before I've had it twice if you have any GD questions feel free to ask. (Some GD stuff is different(#'s and such) then Type 2 diabetes.)

The key with the baby's size is to watch your carb intake, and up your protein intake.
My GD babies were normal sized.
Seamus was induced at 39weeks 5days born at 39weeks 6days(vaginal) and the u/d said he was going to be over 9lbs...he was only 7lbs 9oz

Kieran would've been induced at 40weeks but we had the c-section at 38weeks 3days(footling breech) and she was 6lbs 13oz. (her u/s said 7lbs 12oz if I remember correctly, I remember my mom saying no way she was that big at 38weeks lol)

both kids were GD babies and I was on GD medication/insulin with both.

Thanks girls! Yeah, the OB said to take a peek at the calendar and pick some days in my 38th, 39th, and 40th weeks that look appealing just in case. I've been through 2 inductions before (only gel was used and then my body took over) and they were a piece of cake so I'm hoping it would be the same way this time. I just have had a really rough year, seriously, and this is just another thing to add to the list ya know? LoL!

Yuck.. I'm sorry you have to deal with that. What do you have to do to control it? Is it just watching what you eat or more than that? I hope the next 10 weeks go by fast. At least if you end up being induced your body has done well with it in the past.

I'm sorry this pregnancy has been hard for you. Its so hard to enjoy it when it causes so many problems. Lila's was my most painful/difficult but the good thing is it does end! I hope you don't have to get induced but at least you know your body handles it well in case you do. And hopefully little Seth will give his Mommy a break and come earlier than his sisters!

I don't think its 99% chance of induction d/t GD (I hoping thats a typo).
IRL friends I only had 1 out about 8 get induced with GD (and she put on 83lbs+ at 5'1'). At the hospital I would say about 50/50. It really depends on how bad it is. Some women can just control it with diet and not need much extra of anything. some have to do medications and have a ton more stuff. There is a WIDE spectrum there. Also some women/fetus just handle it fine and others a little difference and everything is off whack.
So don't count yourself out yet. How bad is your numbers?

aww *hugs* i'm so sorry you have GD hun. I wanted to mention that my mom had GD when she was pregnant with me and i was only 6 lbs 12 oz, so maybe if you watch your carb intakes like justine says he won't get too big. i wonder if your doc (or dr. google) could give you the stats about sizes of babies born to mothers with managed GD vs unmanaged GD...and also what the stats say about the actual outcomes (induction, interventions, csec etc) of those situations too. maybe with management the outcomes are better than you'd think!

also i want to say that seriously, i think you are super mommy!!

I don't know, I haven't actually been in to see my doctors yet and I didn't think to ask about the numbers. We don't have a land line and my cell phone (and internet for that matter) were all crazy yesterday and it kept cutting out, I felt so bad LoL. I couldn't send texts either.. anyway LoL. The nurse said my blood sugars were abnormal and that I should get a call today about when and where my class is. She said she's hopeful that diet would control it but I'll need to prick my fingers and track my sugars about 4-5 times a day. If that seems to be keeping it at bay then I won't need to take shots or pills. She said they'd only induce if my blood pressure was all crazy (it's already high) or if he was abnormally large and right now there's a 50/50 chance of induction. I guess time will tell

Lisa.....I went thru the class with Harrison ...it basically reminds you how to eat healthy...its like "duh"...should always eat this way! I ended up really only watching my diet and taking some oral meds...it was easily controlled. I was NOT induced because of my GD but because of my blood pressure. I had a 6 pound 7 ounce baby - big for 37 weeks but not huge!

With Nora....its was much worse and I was on insulin shots 4x per day. I will bet you will be able to control things with diet......lets hope and pray for that! I went into labor on my own and was helped along to make sure she came quickly due to my BP again - not the GD. However I believe having GD increases BP risks...etc.

So don't fret! But keep us posted

Thanks ladies! The one thing I'm grateful for is my midwives are still in this practice and I'm still seeing them along with my OBs so my midwives will always step in if they think something isn't right. My OBs are very naturally minded (they even recommend FAM and say birth control is just miserable for a woman's body LoL) so I trust them. I saw them off and on during my pregnancy with Rylie and they're great. I know I'm in good hands so that's comforting. My next appointment is a week from today, September 3rd, and then I start going every 2 weeks

I'm sorry. I hope you're able to avoid another induction! It definitely sounds like you're in good hands at least
