Copy and pasted this email I sent to my mom and dad so I didn't have to type it all up again
Good morning mom! Hope you slept well! Now that I have 5 mins I thought I'd tell you how yesterday went. We learned about our diet and it's similar but different than a regular diabetic. I have to check my blood sugars 6 times a day and I have my monitor, lancets, and strips now. Tomorrow I have to go for ANOTHER fasting glucose test/blood draw and then prick my finger to ensure my monitor is working correctly and then I go upstairs for a prenatal appointment. We were told that we have a 66% chance of getting diabetes later in life, my risk of c-section just went up substantially, and chances are Seth will be born with low blood sugar and will have blood work done soon after birth. He may even have trouble breathing after delivery so be prepared to possibly not hold him right away. I will have to have weekly (fairly soon) non stress tests where they monitor contractions and heart rate for Seth and they'll need to do at least 1, if not more, ultrasounds to determine his growth and fluid levels. Apparently I'm at risk of preterm labor now which is why I'm having REAL contractions, feeling pressure, and feeling the cervix pinching that I felt later on in my pregnancies with the girls. The reason is because the fluid levels in the gestational sac tend to be higher in a diabetic and the waters will just randomly burst because of his movement. They'll be monitoring his growth because they want to make sure his shoulders won't be too big to pass through the birth canal and cause shoulder dystocia (where his shoulders either break coming through the birth canal or he gets stuck because their too big and they'd need to preform an emergency c-section). I go back on the 9th and she'll check my food diary and my sugars and see if any changes need to be made to my diet or if I need insulin shots. My blood pressure was beyond excellent yesterday so that's good news. For this class, it was a nurse and a dietrician so they were very helpful. There were 3 other girls in the class with me. I got to see my results from the 3 hour test I took and I was definitely on the high side but it wasn't crazy. They said I most likely will be induced in my 39th or 40th week. So I test my sugars before every meal and 2 hours after every meal. Anyway, if I think of anything else I'll let you know. Andy should be working late tonight so if that actually still happens, please pray my girls are nice to me LoL. I'm 31 weeks today, woot woot!

I was induced with both my girls and delivered in 8 hours both times so I can only hope it would go the same. They said some of those things may not happen to me but they want me to be prepared so I'm hoping I can skate by with little complications. I was really hoping to avoid induction this time *sigh* The last 2 times I never needed pit, just the gel, so once again, I'm hoping it could be just as simple. What hit me this morning was if I am induced early, he'll be here NEXT MONTH... wow LoL.

Though a bit scary when the possibilities of what could happen are listed but it's good that you have all the information necessary to control it and hopefully Seth will beat all the odds and not need any kind of intervention.
Cheers to 31 weeks!!

Oh Lisa....the class is a bit intimidating! I remember thinking..."how in the world will I ever do this". But I did and you will!!~!~ And although those risks are all real and valid, they don't always happen. Both kids were very healthy when born....Harrison did have some trouble with his temp but I did get to hold him...granted he was born at 37 weeks because of my BP not GD and I have chronic hypertension outside of pregnancy so the diabetes didn't create this problem on its own. I did have high fluid with Harrison too but that never caused a problem.....
Good luck hun! You will do great! And although you will be sick of grilled chicken and green beans - you'll feel great eating by this diet!

Don't be put off by the statistics. The risk of a c-section does double or triple or something like that but you're talking about doubling or tripling a 3 or 4% risk so it really isn't that big of a risk. Same goes for shoulder dystocia. You've had 2 other babies vaginally with little or no complication and that means your pelvis does what it needs to. A first time mother with GD is really the one at risk because her pelvis is unproven. Even though Ash was estimated to end up between 9 and 10 pounds (and would have if I hadn't gone early) there were no complications besides some tearing. You can totally do this!

Thanks girls! I'm definitely hoping for the best since, so far anyway, my sugars aren't too crazy. I have to eat 30 carbs for breakfast, 15 for a snack, 45 for lunch, 30 for a snack, 60-75 for dinner, and 30 for a snack. So far today my blood sugar after breakfast was 92 and I'll test again in about an hour since that'll be 2 hours since I ate lunch

I think everything will end up just gine. I'm sure if you end up induced it will go smoothly like with your girls. At least that is what I'm hoping for you.

Hang in there and try not to worry.. Also, just think.. You will get special attention then the average pregnant mom.. If you get induced, you get bumped to the front of the line..
I had GD with both of my kiddos and was induced both times.. Both were born perfect and unaffected by me having GD..
btw.. I was never pregnant during the holidays.. I would have died if I was..
