Moms - When did you put your LO in a toddler bed or convert their crib?

J.J hates his crib. He hates everything about being in it -- day/evening or otherwise. I want to get him a toddler bed, DH is concerned with his "sleep walking" (J.J wakes up at night -- eyes closed and stands up and walk about his crib crying) he might hurt himself, however, I am tired of the 1-2 hour battles every night to get him to sleep. I think that maybe a bed will help J.J out.

Thoughts/advice/etc?

ETA: We don't have the space/money for a twin bed currently. Just as an FYI

We didn't do toddler beds, we went right to the twin bed.

Liam went into a twin when I needed the crib for Lochy so he was a little over 2 by the time I wanted the crib.

Lochy went into a twin when he was 21 months. He so desperately wanted to be a big boy and he did fine in it. We did do a bed rail for a few months but he didn't need it long. He gets night terrors and would do the same thing as JJ in the crib but he stayed put in the bed.

We put Taylor in hers on her 2nd birthday. I didn't want her all over the room doing Lord knows what Rylie, and I mean this in the best way possible LoL, is a little slower than Taylor was, mentally, and I'm honestly not sure she'll be ready at 2... we'll have to see I guess. Sure she can get up on it and down from it (already have her toddler bed set up in Taylor's room for when Seth takes over the crib Rylie's in right now in a different room) but I'm afraid she could get hurt or something bad will happen, I dunno LoL.

Reid went to a toddler bed when he was 22 months old. Big mistake for us, because he was a GREAT crib sleeper. We just didn't feel like bringing our big ol crib with us when we moved to our new place. I would have preferred to do a twin bed but it would have been at least $400 with a mattress as opposed to the $89 toddler bed, lol.

He did great in his toddler bed at first, but then it was HELL for like 2-3 weeks. It was like CIO all over again We have a gate in front of his door but he would stand there screaming and he was even waking up a couple times a night!! He is fine now (mostly....) but it was horrible for a while.

Since JJ already doesn't like the crib, I guess it can't hurt to just switch him now. You're going to have to eventually. I dunno though, I don't really see it helping. I just think that it can't hurt.

Well Curtis was 20 - 21 months I believe. The transition was NOT easy. It can be really hard to teach them to stay in their bed... It was not a fun time haha... but I LOVE when they are finally sleeping in a toddler bed. I like when they can come and go.

We tried with Dustin but it was a no go. He fights sleep already and it just didn't help. We'll try again later. I didn't really want two kids in cribs but it isn't up to me! I have to wait till Dustin is ready. That way I got to get all new nursery furniture so I can't complain haha.

I changed Oliver's crib to a toddler bed around 1 year old. He learned to get in and out on his own after a short time. He never sleeps in it but did nap in it a few times.

My only thought is that JJ is going to fall out easily if he stands up in the dark and walks around like he does in his crib. I'm not sure it's going to matter if he has a toddler bed but I guess it doesn't hurt to try. I just hope he doesn't fall out and get more upset up his bed.

He was older than 2 but I think less than 3? Wow that narrowed it down huh! And then at 4 1/2 i switched him to a twin bed. But i converted his crib first and I didn't like it so I bought him a new toddler bed and he would wiggle out too much and then he was just too big for it so I switched him to his twin. he never sleeps a full night in there LOL but I get a few hours of peace at least hahahaha

Just converted ours 3 nights ago. Riley just turned 19 months on the 1st but the other afternoon i was in his room after he woke from a nap. He climbed 3/4 of the way over the rail and would have went over head first if i hadn't of stopped him. So i converted it. The first night he did awesome, STTN and didn't get out of bed once or even roll out of it. It has the little rail that came with it which is kind of pointless since it only covers like a third of the way a cross, i'd like it to cover at least half but it is what it is. I don't know if an aftermarket rail will fit and i haven't looked at any. i also piled tons of blankets on the floor just in case Night 2 wasn't as easy, he dind't want to go to bed at all. Got out twice and eventually fell aslepp lying on the floor in front of the door. I put him back in bed and then he woke up at 530 when he usually sleeps till 730 or 8. Last night went well again, STTN until i woke him up at 730 this morning. The only problems we have is naptime, he'd rather get out and play with toys, before we put him in his crib awake with a couple of his books, the thick paged ones, and he would "read" himself to sleep yesterday he fell asleep when hubby took him to the bank and stayed asleep when he transfered him from the car to his bed. Today i got him to fall asleep while i rocked him and he's now snoozing in his bed covered up. so far so good. At the sitters he'll go to the pack 'n play she has for naps and climb in it when he's tired so i'm hoping that he'll start doing that with his bed as well when he's ready for a nap or bed.

Ya I'd find Curtis in strange places fast asleep when we first did the toddler bed. One time I went in at night cause he was crying for me. I couldn't find him ANY WHERE. It scared me but I could hear him crying. Then I figured out he was under his bed.... I have NO Idea how that happened, the bed is really close to the ground haha. Anyways I got him out and he was fine.

Amara still uses her crib. *blushes* Her crib is convertible and that's what I will use for a bit longer and then we will go straight to a twin bed. I want to get one with the trundle since her room is small.

Amara used to have problems with her crib and for me, I discovered that it was the vinyl/plastic type cover on the mattress. She was never comfortable in it. I bought a quilted mattress cover and ripped of the plastic/vinyl covering and used the quilted cover. I have had no problems since. I keep two of the mattress covers so that if she she leaks, I have an extra and time to wash the other. They have plastic type back which protects the sponge/mattress foam but it's not hard like my mattress cover was.

Mia was 18 months old. We had no problems....She only gets out of her bed if she wants to get up...She has never been one for emptying all her clothes out or anything. If your worried about him getting up when he sleep walks why not get a safty side?
We never botherd with a safty side, just put pillows on the floor.
She is getting a propper sized bed in a few weeks

My 1st ds hated the crib, so I converted it to a toddler bed when he was only 14 months old... I was nervous at first so I took our giant pillows from the living room (2 of them together was the size of the toddler mattress) and laid them on the floor next to the bed in case he did fall out.... but we never had a problem, he did great with it. By the time he was 2, we had him in a twin bed with a guard rail.

As for my 2nd ds, he will be 2 in 2 months and I don't know when I will convert it for him... I keep thinking I need to do it soon so he has time to adjust before the baby gets here and needs the crib, but the baby won't even need the crib for the first few months so who knows what I'll do.
