So I'm afraid Harper may have ingested some honey. I was cooking with it and it got on my hands. I wiped them off with a towel but didn't wash them thoroughly and then I was playing with the baby and she had my hands in her mouth. Now I'm freaking out. What do I do?

Less than 5 percent of patients with infant botulism contract the disease from honey.


The amount she would have ingested would be very small, so probably not as great of chance as if you were feeding it to her.

I'd look up the symtpoms and call your pedi if you are suspicious of it.

Do you breastfeed? That should help some. I'd call the pedi to put your mind at ease, but i'd say she is fine.

also check to see if it was pasteurized. Doesn't some honey come that way and that kills anything?

If it was me I probably wouldn't worry about it. Just keep an eye on her but I think she's absolutely ok.

It doesn't seem like she would have ingested much so it may not be cause for worry but you could call your pedi and see what he/she says.

Ditto Shannon on the links. The occurrence of botulism is small and given that it may have only been a lick, I think she'll be fine.

oh god the horrific stuff my IL's have given my nephew leads me to believe that harper will be ok! i agree call the pedi if she has symptoms and you are concerned.
