Is there a way to politely tell someone you don't like the way they smell?
Honestly, it goes beyond not liking it, it physically makes me nauseated. And I hate having this person hold Lila because then she smells like that too and I have to either wipe her down with a baby wipe or give her another bath.
I'm thinking there's no way around it. Just grin and bear it and bathe her if need be.

well, its my mil so yes i'm around her all the time
it's a perfume smell (its like an old lady perfume and she wears waaaayyyy too much of it) and she pops garlic pills like they're candy so the combination of the two makes it much worse.
she wouldn't stop wearing the perfume if i told her i was allergic to it.

Id tell her Lila had come out in a rash and you think it might be down to her perfume?
Could you buy her a diffrent perfume and hijack her garlic pills?

I'd say that Lila is reacting to something and as a method of elimination, if she could change it or not wear it for a bit so I can help determine what it is. If she does, then about a week later, I would tell her that I noticed a huge difference since she stopped and then I'd say I'm sorry because I know she loved it and suggest going with her to pick out and purchase (on me) a different kind that's more pleasing. Choose a sample first to tell her that you need to test it to see if Lila will react to that as well...just to follow the whole story through.

I think you are going to be stuck smelling it no matter what since you live with her. I'd go nuts smelling the perfume.

She would not stop wearing perfume if I told her Lila had an allergy to it. She has several different kinds she just has a horrible sense of smell so no matter what it is she ends up putting waaaayyyy too much on. She must drive her patients crazy at work! Oh and the garlic is to ward off sickness--she has an entire kitchen cabinet just of her vitamins.
She does the same thing with air freshener and cleaning supplies. She'll use it til she can smell it while the rest of us are searching for the nearest open window.
She used to spray her nasty perfume on the boys hands and finally stopped after I had to tell her about 10 times. Actually she only stopped because her niece told her it wasn't good. God forbid she listen to me, their Mother. Instead she listens to a raging alcoholic who drank during her first pregnancy and while breastfeeding and again with her new baby. This same woman had the nerve to try and tell me the things I should and shouldn't be doing/taking while pregnant. Sorry, turned into a whole other rant!

That would really bug me. My nose is very sensitive. I'd probably just tell her someone else said she smelled gross or get one of your kids to! Have Liam tell her she stinks. Maybe she'll get the idea.

I would flip if my MIL sprayed perfume on my child's hands. WHY??? I can't believe this lady is in a PA. How much longer do you think you will have to live with her? It must get stressful living with your IL's.
