Given my recent issues with having Bella...a friend of my sisters asked why I havent asked my OB for a hysterectomy yet. Well...cuz I didnt know hysterectomies were elective? Do you guys think I should ask them about it? Seeing as if I EVER got pregnant again, it could mean my life and/or the baby's ...and Im NOT willing to risk that. Just throwing it out there to get your ladies feedback.....thank you

~Beth

My MIL got one and was happy with her choice. It doesn't hurt to talk to your doctor

I don't know about yours, but my insurance company does not cover an elective hysterectomy.

Lurking but saw this. I just had a hysterectomy 2 weeks ago for the same reason (if i got pregnant it could me mine and the babies life) but i asked my dr about it. I was also having other bleeding problems. But it is def something you can talk to them about and they might consider it medically necisary with your medical problems. HTH Good Luck

I think considering if you got pregnant again you'd be very high risk I think your doctor would be willing to do it.
Im not sure with you being in the states x

I think it is pretty rare for a woman to get a hyterectomy b/c she HAS to...like in a case of uterine cancer or something of that sort. Most of the time, it is b/c they are having non-life threatening medical problems that having a hyterectomy will resolve (fibroids, benign tumors, heavy bleeding, endometriosis, etc). I don't know what condition you have, but if taking your uterus out would fix it, then I wouldn't consider it elective.

I know nothing about it but it would be good to speak with your doctor about it.

I plan on getting one when I am done having kids because of the extreme high risk I have for uterine/ovarian and cervical cancer. I want it allllll taken out. Not to mention I have endo, so anything will help.

Most insurance companies will only cover them if they are medically necessary which in you case i would imagine it would be

my mom had on in January for Fibroids, and the doc at the clinic said I had to have one for what ever the heck this bleeding issue I have is.

With the rupture, I think it would be medically necessary - seeing as even with the IUD, I COULD get pregnant again, and that would be bad. very bad. With the tubal, even if for what EVER reason I got pregnant, again that would be bad. hubby is all for me getting my tubes tied, or even having the essure put in, but I just want it done and over with, you know? My OB would say its not a nessessity, but if I wanted one, then yes, I could have it as medically necessary - which would probably help out in the insurance department. going to take this week to think it over, and obviously talk with my husband. Thanks for your input ladies

i just wanted to mention that there hasn't been any mention of what the benefits of keeping your uterus would be. i don't actually know anything about it myself but i do know that risks of certain cancers can go up after menopause (breast, in particular if you have a higher bmi) and i'm guessing a hysterectomy is similar physiologically to going thru menopause....so maybe google what the risks associated with taking it out would be? just so you get a better idea of what you are getting yourself into! good luck making your decision!

If she's just having her uterus removed and not her ovaries, then Beth would not be in an induced or surgical menopause. The ovaries will continue to produce hormones until the natural start of menopause.
