OK so I am soooooo in trouble here. Im thinking I need to go Dairy free... Baylen had Green poop a few weeks back and thought It was a milk imbalance so I left him on the boob longer. Well he was fine for a while and now It's back and it's every poop for over a week now! WTH!? I haven't changed my diet he eats about 8-10 times a day sometimes up to 45 mins! Im thinking It may be a dairy thing now. This I know may be imposable for me to avoid! I dont eat Red meat or Pork Product's but do eat Chicken. I also dont eat a lot of Green veggies. I know Im a horiable eater! I seriously live off of pasta's and cheese things. I know there are a few mama's out there that do Dairy free so I NEED your help! What do you eat? What do you suggest? Im so not a happy camper right now

I eat a lot of rice. A ton of it. Pasta with red sauce. Various chicken things. If you need recipes I can send you some. Let me know. They also have soy cheese at Trader Joes which is good and vegan butter at Whole Foods.

Is it bad to have green poop? I know it's not the normal color for a BF baby. Is he acting like his stomach hurts? Is this something new? I would think if it's dairy his poop would have been green all along. I don't know much about this except for the milk imbalance and I read block feeding can help but it sounds like that is what you tried. Maybe you can ask his doc's office about it if you think they are up to date on these kind of things. Or a LC? Shannon should have some info on this for you since she dealt with it.

Resi.

I'm not sure if it's the dairy since the poops have not always been green and you've been using dairy all the while. I would have a chat with his Pedi to see if he/she can she any light on what may be causing th egreen poops. I used to hear green poops were related to the foremilk/hindmilk but I don't know anything much about that.

Well I heard Green poops were an imbalance so I left him on longer and it did go away but then came back. Sometimes there still seedy though so I know he's getting the good stuff. Some times there more mucousy. I did ask my Peid and she said that It could just mean that the BM Is running through him faster then before which is fine but it might mean he will be hungry sooner. I feed him about every 2 hours and let him nurse as long as he wants. It's usually 20-30 mins everytime. She also said, which I read to that sometimes babies just get green poop more then before. He doesn't act like he's in pain or anything I eat bother's him. The Breastfeeding board brought up that maybe he's dairy sensiitive, which I was afraid would be their answer, lol. The first thing I thought of was Shannon too, I hop she has some good answers!

If it were me I would continue to eat my normal diet and let it be for the time. You said he isn't in pain so your diet must not be upsetting him stomach. I thought it was rare for babies to have problems with breastmilk (like what the mom is eating)? I know it can happen but I thought not that often? I just saw on FB that Nikki learned in her BF training that the foremilk and hindmilk isn't that much different that once thought?

It is so tough to know! To be honest if it was JUST some greenish poops I might let it be. But if you say he is having some mucus in there you might have to cut out dairy. I still had problems with Matthew having some mucus even after I cut out the dairy, so I think he may have a couple things that bother him. He also had problems with reflux and just tummy issues in general though.

Green poop can also be a sign of a virus, but it should go away if it's a virus.

Matthew didn't have a lot of green poop (it was occassional), but he did have mucusy poops and also here's a biggie: Have them check his poop for occult (hidden) blood. If there's blood in there, that's a good sign he is having trouble with dairy, or something else. I read that the VAST majority of the time, if they have trouble, dairy is the culprit. Matthew had blood in there (hidden) for a bit and then it went away and has stayed away, even when I've tried dairy. Now dairy gives him diarrhea and mucus in his poop and diaper rash, but he can tolerate it through breastmilk now.

As for what to eat, it was really hard for me. If I had to go back and do it again I might cut out the major dairy but leave in the trace stuff (like small amounts in pre packaged baked goods). Whole Foods has dairy free butter substitute (I think it's made by Earth Balance) and maybe Trader Joes has it as well. You can try soy products, but be aware that I think 50% of babies who have issues with dairy, will have problems with soy as well. I drank Hemp milk, or you can do rice or almond milk. Rice milk does okay as a substitute for when you are cooking, just replace it for the regular milk. Some of the things you can eat with no dairy: eggs, spaghetti, stews (with roast meat, potatoes, carrots), chicken and dumplings, chicken and rice, basically any dish that doesn't have cheese (I know that's tough b/c the cheese makes it yummy!)

It takes many weeks for ALL the dairy to get out of your system, so you if you give it up, it may take awhile for it to take effect. The first time I cut dairy out, i don't think I gave it a long enough try.

Brayden's wasn't green either, it was just gobs and gobs of mucous. And I didn't eliminate ALL dairy, since a lot is process before it gets to baby, I just took out the strong ones like milk and ice cream and only ate aged cheeses since I figured it was a lactose intolerance like me.

oh and I cooked with lactaid milk too.

Thanks again everyone. Im just gonna stay with what were doing right now. It comes and goes but is mostly green but still seedy for the most part. He doesn't seem to be bothered by it so maybe it's not a dairy thing and maybe he's a green pooping baby!
