So we tried solids for the first time tonight... steamed carrots pureed with a little bit of booby juice. Did not go well! She's apparently not a fan of carrots. She made a face and spit it out. Then yelled at us when we tried to give her more!

DH thinks we should try fruit instead, but I wanted to do veggies first because I didn't want her to expect all her veggies to taste sweet like fruit and then not like it.

What was everyone's experience with offering fruits first vs. veggies? Do you feel it might have affected your LO's taste for veggies? Does anyone have any recommendations on foods that babies generally like? I was thinking about sweet potatoes since it is a bit of a compromise... sweet but still a veggie... DH wants to go to bannanas.

My first thought was that her tongue thrust reflex is still there (last thing to go before ready for solids). Many mom can mistake their child not liking the food when really its their body using the tongue to protect the airway since its not ready to swallow safely. (it can be gone earlier than 6 months and almost always gone by 9months). London's didn't go away till 7 months (boys tend to be the later).
I would wait a week and try again.

Ya I'd just wait and try again later I doubt it has anything to do with the food itself.

I personally would hold off on carrots for awhile because they are high in nitrates. We did sweet potatoes first. He loved them. I started with veggies first but now he won't eat veggies or rarely does. Maybe wait another week and try again with another veggie or fruit. I don't see anything wrong with trying bananas next.

I agree that she sounds like she isn't ready. The first time I gave Oliver food he swallowed it right down and didn't push any of it back out.

Personally I would keep trying. Everytime Jaxon tried a new food he would have that same reaction. Usually he would make a horrible face and the first couple bites would be pushed out. It would just take a bit to get going. I think it is more the surprise of having a new taste. There really is no need to go in a certain order of foods, just try a bit of everything.

We started with fruit first because he has such a problem with pooping that we were giving him 4-5 spoonfuls of pears or prunes daily starting at 10 weeks since prune juice was not working. He ate anything we put infront of him when we got the green light to do solids more full-time.

Whatever you feed her now anyway when she gets older she may not like anyway -- keep in mind kids get new taste buds every 10 days

i think sweet potatoes sounds like a good idea.....wish i had better advice!

I did butternut squash first and I introduced it slowly. She only took maybe 1 or 2 spoons the first time and then i waited and tried another time.

I used this website a lot when I was looking for options. In addition to options for food, you will get information on the nutritional value the best age for introduction, and recipes.

All the girls gave great advice I always started with fruits though. It just tastes better and always seemed to make them want to try anything I gave them. This might be bad, but I always took a little Splenda (and I mean a LITTLE) and put it in their veggies for the first few times. Eventually I stopped and they never noticed and they'd eat them. Now, since their older, veggies are a "no go" and I buy V8 Splash so they get veggies in them LoL!!

I would keep trying .. we did purred apples or pear first .. then moved onto veg ... to be honest she never had any problem with different tastes.
When we did start tho she obviously automaticly stick her tounge out (as if eating from a bottle) because thats all they know how to eat .. it will come but I would just keep trying.

We tried pears tonight (I know you are supposed to wait in between introducing new foods, but she didn't eat any of the carrots). She ate them, but wasn't exactly impressed. I think this is going to take some getting used to. And here I thought she would just LOVE new foods!

On a side note, she has been refusing both her bottle at daycare and the booby at home lately. That is SO unlike her, usually if you offer her some booby juice, she takes it. Is that a sign of teething? She just suddenly started doing it. I'm wondering if that is a part of her not being impressed with her purees...?

Oh and one more thing... anyone know if babies can have coconut milk at this age?

Sam, I didnt know about the taste bud thing! Interesting!

Mari, thank you for sharing that website!!! I think I will put that to use for more than just the baby

With Ian, I didnt know you were suppose to wait, and he ate everything under the sun. I would give him rice cereal at 3 months old because formula was just not enough for him. that helped him stay fuller longer through nap time (never slept through the night till we moved when he was a year old) I started with veggies first I believe. But honestly it really doesnt make a difference. Morgan on the other hand, I started her at 9 months (Formula was just the top of the crop for her, and she was always satisfied so we never introduced them any earlier) but when we did, she prefered the veggies over the fruit!! Now, not so much LOL but with Bella, we've only tried once or twice, and every time, she just sucked it off the spoon, but I wasn't doing it to feed her, just to see where her reflex was.

Im not sure why she'd refuse the bottle and booby, maybe it is teething? My kids never went on a bottle strike, ever LOL

I did cereal first with Jenna, then squash. She wasn't crazy about solids at 6 mon though. We would practice with them once a week until about 7-7.5 months. Then she started to get the hang of the spoon and enjoy them more. It sounds like maybe Charlotte isn't ready.

I don't totally remember what we did first, but I think it was more fruits than veggies. He actually does prefer his fruits more than veggies now but I think it's just b/c fruit IS tastier.

I don't think they should have any sort of milk (besides BM or formula) until they are a year old. I had someone tell me coconut is fairly allergenic so that might be something to hold off for quite some time.

Thanks for all of your help! I swear sometimes I think I would be lost without all the advice you ladies give me.

We did pears again tonight and it went well! This time we used a finger to feed her instead of a baby spoon and she really enjoyed it. I think it was the spoon throwing her off before. Anyway, she was grinning the whole time and even grabbed my hand a couple of times to help herself.
