My doc told me today that I failed my glucose test
My hospital doesn't seem to work like everyone else's, they only do one test and it's two hours. Anyways, I failed and now I keep reading things on GD and stuff about big babies and inductions and it scares me.
I'm supposed to talk to a nutritionist tomorrow, so I guess I'll know more then. I was in shock when my doc told me so I didn't really ask many questions.
The only good news, I guess, is that I almost passed. The nurse told me my number had to be below 7.8 to pass and it was 7.9.

Sorry to hear that. I don't really know anything about this but I'm sure you can control it easily with your diet.

Caroline, so sorry to hear you didn't pass your glucose test....I wouldn't worry too much about it. I had gestational diabetes in both of my pregnancies and am on medication even now because of my diabetes issues. It is ususally very controllable with diet.....especially if your number was close like that. I did not have big babies....and I was induced but not because of GD, however my inductions both went fast and easy...so don't be scared, everything isn't always by the "book" so to speak...stay positive...and just do your best with diet and as much exercise as you are allowed to do or feel good enough to do! Feel free to PM me if you ever have any questions about GD!

GD does not mean that you will have a big baby. As long as you controll it you will be fine. Seamus was a 7lb 9oz baby @ 39weeks 6days and Kieran was 6lbs 13oz at 38weeks 3days. I had gd with both of them, but I couldn't control mine with diet alone, I was on insulin injections with Seamus and a pill with Kieran.
And yes your chances for induction do go up because as a general rule of thumb arond 90-99% of doctors won't let you go past 40 weeks with GD because the placenta usually starts to deteroiate alot faster in GD pregnancies then normal pregnancies. But having an induction doesn't mean you will have a c-section (Seamus was induced and he was born vaginally), and I have a friend IRL that was induced last month and still labored med free.
They'll probably do more u/s's to check the size of baby, lung maturity (cause GD lungs do mature slower) and fluid lvls cause gd pregnancies tend to have more fluid. But its really not that bad, most people can control their gd with diet alone.
If you have any questions feel free to ask I've been through it twice.

((HUGS)) I bawled my eyes out when they told me I had GD with Seth. I had a class with a RN and a dietitian and it was very helpful. I also barely failed the test. It was easily controlled with diet and I'm actually still on the diet they put me on but they modified it to lose weight and it's great. Your induction rate goes up, they induced me at 39 weeks 1 day and he was 7lbs 1oz. I was told I wouldn't be allowed to go past my due date. I still had a vaginal delivery with no epidural or IV and was in the shower, doing my own thing. I had no NST because it was so minor but I did have one additional u/s (YAY!) at 38 weeks and it was neat to see him so big. Try not to worry, it's really not that bad

I'm sorry you failed.
When I did it, we had the 2 test. I failed the first but passed the second.

Aw I'm sorry. I wish they did more than just one test... I failed my one hour but passed my 4 hour. It makes me wonder if they took a longer test if you would pass.

wanted to pipe in here, since I had GD as well with 2 of my pregnancies. My GD was controlled by diet, and it helped A LOT!! Yes, I ended up with a almost 11lb baby, but I am also a bigger woman too. Try going on a HIGH protein diet, and keep testing your numbers. Before you know it, baby will be here

I had to step in too..
I had GD and I barely passed as well with my first but it went full blown as I progressed.. So look at this as a good catch..
I had GD with both of my pregnancies.. My DD I had the WORST time controlling my numbers and I had her at 39 weeks and 3 days and she was a whooping 6 lbs 15 oz's.. My son, I had awesome control.. He was born at 39 weeks and 2 days, 7 lbs 13 oz's.. I had my kids the normal way, vaginal.. I did have to get induced, my kids wanted to bake longer.. But I didn't need any insulin during the delivery nor did I have any complications.. I also ate throughout my laboring.. My numbers stayed in the 70's the whole time..
Don't worry.. You'll be fine and just because you have GD does not mean your doomed to have over weight kids.. Both of my kids are petite and far from being over weight.. Stay strong..
Oh.. I also wanted to add, I was on insulin with both for my pregnancies..
