The amost 18 month old that I watch has had a diaper "rash" for at least 6 months. It looks awful! It is not like a normal rash and I would not consider it a diaper rash. It looks more like a chemical burn. It goes from being bright red and hurting when I wipe him, to light pink, to looking like it's peeling in spots. It's slightly raised and a solid shaped area. It's around his anus area in a misshaped oval. That is the best was to describe it. His mom has taken him to the doctors a couple times. She was given cream once and then a couple different antibiotics. It didn't help at all. She has also tried different OTC diaper rash creams (so have I). I feel bad for him because today he is crying every time I need to clean him up and it's very red and raw. He wears pampers with the dry max (I told her about the problems some were having with them but she hasn't tried any other diapers). She also uses scented wipes which can't help IMO. I believe the doc said it was a yeast problem when she took him in. Any ideas? I think she should try different diapers and wipes to rule them out but I've already mentioned that to her twice and I don't want to seem pushy.

calmoseptine I think that's the correct spelling. It is about $8 and you have to go to the pharmacist to get it. It's OTC but sometimes they have to order it, I know Walmart here can get it. It's actually a cream for tube feeders to go around the tube but it treats severe diaper rash and burns. Try that. He might have an overproduction of stomach acid and it's coming out in his poo or he could have an allergy to something. Brayden would do something similar to what you say each time he ate oatmeal and sausage due to acid and allergy. I'd use the calmoseptine stuff and it would be gone in hours.....nothing else helped! Not even the scripts the dr gave him. You could also try a bit of cortisone cream too, but not if it is peeling or really inflammed as it tends to thin skin a bit. I'd definitely try to find the other and then use cortisone cream for a few days as maintenance and then maybe use some A&D ointment after that to try and prevent it.

I would print out the pampers dry max information and let her know that this is obviously a painful issue for him and it might be a good experiment to see if a change in brand for 2 weeks helps clear up the issue.

Very hard to believe she doesn't even wan to try changing diapers. It's no tlike Huggies or Luvs will cost her any more.
When Henry has terrible rash, the only thing that will help is Hydro-cortisone mixed with Eucerin cream. You have to mix it yourself.

ok there is no reason for her NOT to different diapers is there? that insane she wouldn't try! Sounds like the exact reaction the pampers burn is causing.

It could be food allergy related but to me it sounds more like it could be a Pampers reaction.

I really think it's the diapers. The rash started around the time the new dry max came out. I think she is a pampers snob (although I don't know why!). When she picked him up today we talked about it but I didn't mention trying another brand of diapers. She is basicly blaming it on the doctors for not clearing it up with the meds they gave him in the past. She wants to find a new doctor (for a few different reasons which I understand) for him. I know if my child had a blistery rash for over 6 months I would be willing to try several different things to get rid of it. I think I'm going to send her an email about the pampers issue with some links for her to read. I'll ask that she try out another brand for a couple weeks to test the theory out. I personally think the Target brand of diapers work just as well and they are a lot cheaper! My expensive fav is the Seventh Generation brand.
Thanks for the suggestions. I let her know about the creams mentioned on here.

I hope she tries another brand for his sake! The only thing I can think is maybe she is stocked up on the Pampers in his size and doesn't want to buy another brand since she has so many. But even still seems like you would definitely do that or whatever it takes to make your baby feel better.
Resi I'm using 7th generation too. I used to use Pampers till the DryMax thing came out. I tried Huggies while we were on vacation and he got those gel beads on him a couple times and I wasn't happy with that so decided to spend the extra $ on 7th generation. I guess Oliver is potty trained now, but if you go on Amazon and sign up for their mom program thing, you can get the diapers a lot cheaper! I just signed up for it since we use sposies at night and when he goes to mother's day out.

Yeah you have to switch brands in order for it to go away. Bella had a nasty diaper rash about 2 weeks after she was born, and switched to another diaper and it cleared right up (but it wasnt the diapers that caused it, just made it worse) I have her back on the dry max, and if she gets any sort of rash, I have to switch her off of the pampers to keep it form reacting.
Why do I keep her on the pampers? Because she pee's so much that every single brand Ive tried so far doesnt hold nearly enough like pampers do.

She just put him in a size 6 in the past couple weeks so my guess is that she wasn't stocked up. I'm sure she would try another brand if she believed that the diapers might be causing the problem. My guess is that she hasn't looked into the dry max issues or just doesn't think it's possible.

or is just to lazy to switch brands? Have you bought some store brands and just used thoes diapers while hes at your house? Target sells a nice sized pack for $5 or $6. Might be worth it to let his bum breathe while hes with you...Just a thought
ETA: If you get a generic brand of yeast infection cream, that should help him as well. Poor boy I cant believe his mom hasent thought of changing the brand is there anyway to persuade her to try cloth?

Resi, something I've had to use on both Edward and Preston is Lotramen (sp?) foot cream. Edward had a severe diaper rash once from antibiotics and he couldn't sleep it hurt him so bad so I took him to the ER and the dr. there told me to use it and worked great! I don't understand why she won't try a different brand if for no other reason than just trial and error. And I think Pampers is the devil!

My mom told me to put him in Oliver's cloth diapers while here to let his bottom heal some but I don't like the idea of another baby using Oliver's diapers. For some reason I'm weird about that. I know she has no interest in cloth diapers because I've talked to her about them when Oliver used them. Maybe I will get a pack of Target brand diapers and see if it helps. I've been using different wipes that aren't frangeranced while he is here to see if it helps any.

Is the dry max a new thing? Brayden was allergic to generic diapers, but that was a whole different kind of rash. But i don't remember anything about dry max. he wore pampers 99% of them because i liked them better.
nevermind, answered my own question.

Yes! He is a big boy. He is about 30 lbs. He is about 5 lbs heavier than Oliver. Oliver can fit into a size 3 but was wearing a size 4 when in disposables before potty training.

This sounds awful. I hope you get her to try a different brand. I'm surprised her doctor(s) hadn't suggested that as well.

I would think if it was the diapers, it would be a more a larger more generalized rash since the diaper is in contact with a lot of the buttocks...not just in the anal area like you described. I think it could be yeast like the Dr said. Fungal rashes are very persistant and can be hard to treat. Diaper cream won't help. You have to use a fungal cream to treat them, and even then it can take 4-6 weeks to see improvement.
While switching diapers won't hurt, if you can get her to do it and it doesn't help, it is probably fungal and needs specific fungal treatment.

Ian was size 6 at this same age, he was a tall boy and needed the bigger size for the length
