Any thoughts on this?

I read some controversial arguments about it and I'm trying to get a better view of it. I had heard about it before but never really paid any attention to it. Today, I was checking out cereal ingredients, trying to find some healthy but fun snacks for Amara and noticed that the ones I liked have high fructose corn syrup.

I gather it's similar to an artificial sweetener and some of the arguments I've seen suggest it could be an addictive for kids (they will crave the foods with it).

Too tired now to pull up the articles I have for it, but its something that we try to stay away from! I love my soda too much to fully cut it out, though.

I avoid it when ever possible. And Bethy---try some Coke (soda) thats made in Mexico...they don't use HFCS..so if you have a local shop that sells to Mexicans you should be able to find it there. I actually prefer the flavor!

Color me an awful Mom but its not something I'm concerned about. In the words of my Mom "we've got bigger fish to fry."

I'm trying to stay away from it...we don't really buy food with HFCS in it, and I usually cook from scratch.

I do have one Coke every day though, because I love it so much I'm not really worried about that small amount, I'm trying to cut that out too because my midwife wants me to but I have to take it slow because I used to drink it ALL day long

Thanks for you input.

Thanks for the link Angela.

Is it corn syrup in general or just the HFCS?

I don't buy things with it. Mainly b/c items that have HFC used usually have other ingredients I don't want my family eating.

I try to make healthier choices for my kids but I tend to do it in an over all sorta way. They get a balanced meal. I don`t worry to much about every little ingredient nor do a worry about organic and such.

This is my reasoning too. HFCS by itself is not the end of the world, but usually there are so many other bad things mixed in.

Beth - Do you have a Whole Foods near you? I buy the 365 WF brand of soda for Damon. It does not have corn syrup in it. It's tastes good too! All natural ingredients but not organic.

I seem to recall a few studies done that stated HFCS is not recognized/processed by the body the same as sugar and could eventually lead to more weight gain. I could be very wrong about that

I tend to avoid it just because I don't know what is in it! Too much artifical anything can't be good.

I just try to avoid it and sugar and all that jazz, but Xander does occasionally consume it. A majority of what he eats is whole food, so I try not to worry about it.

Resi- I saw that! And got super excited when I did, but noticed it didnt have caffeine in it, and thats #2 of why I drink soda. So we passed it up

Angela- hun, I live in Mexi-nugget town, every store near me is hispanic LOL there are like 5 within a 6 block radius - So I will go over there and see what they carry for Coke. I LOVE me a cold coke.

I was eating some soup yesterday (campbell's) and wanted to read the ingredients....yup, there is HFCS in campbell's tomato soup - WHY? It does have a sweet taste, but why throw it in there??? Sucks cuz thats the only brand of tomato soup I like. We've been doing about 60% organic, and I can already see a difference in the way my stomach works. My IBS flare ups arnt nearly as bad.

I'm not concerned at this point because we don't buy a lot of processed or prepared foods and I don't drink soda anymore.

What I've heard about it is that it is so highly processed and concentrated that it has higher levels of mercury than is recommended. And since it is in everything it would be possible to od on mercury.

But again, for now I'm not very concerned. I just don't like that it's in practically everything, even tomato soup or loaves of bread.

I don't really like HFCS but I don't like stuff with a lot of added sugar either. I think HFCS is probably worse. We do eat some things with it though. I'm not the best at making everything from scratch, just don't have the time or inclination or ability.

I know there is a push from some manufacturers (I think Coke?) to get it called just "corn syrup" instead of HFCS in hopes that it will have less of a stigma. I took a survey that was trying to base what people thought of the different "terms" for sugar.
