Any suggestions on how to make this easier to deal with? What sort of food should I be cutting out of my diet? Is there any thing I can give Jacob to help him calm down?

The last two nights have been hell. I can't imagine having to go through more of this

I've always heard baby probiotics have helped with Colic.. Worth a shot.. You can find baby probiotics at a health food store in the refrigerator section.

Here's a site you might like

I second the probiotics. Keep in mind it could take a few days to notice a difference. Charlotte is on a probiotic due to thrush, I give her 1/4 teaspoon twice a day and I mix it with tepid water in a syringe and then have her suck it out of the syringe. I would recommend starting with 1/4 teaspoon once per day for a few days and then working up to twice per day, otherwise he may experience some bowel upset and some seriously potent diapers.

Something else you could try is Mylicon drops. I've never used them but I know plenty of moms that absolutely swear by them. Both probiotics and Mylicon are over the counter and fine to use in newborns. I hope you get some relief soon! *hugs*

I'd also try Mylicon drops. Taylor had colic and that helped some. In my own kids I've found dairy, coffee, leafy veggies, and spicy foods can upset my kids tummies when I'm BF. ((HUGS))

From what I understand, colic isn't well understood. Drs aren't sure what really causes it...or really what it is (stomach pain, gas, etc). Other than the babies cry for more than 3 hrs per day more than 3 days a week for no explainable reason.

Unless you notice a pattern of fussiness after you eat certain foods there, their blood in the stool, or a clearly allergic reaction of some sort (bad rash)....it probably doesn't have anything to do with what you are eating.

Just take a deep breath and know that colic just sometimes happens. There is NOT something wrong with your milk, so please don't stop BFing b/c of this. Jenna had colic (maybe or just was really fussy) and my mom used to tell me my milk was bad and to just give her formula So glad I didn't listen.

It is just a matter of finding what works for your baby. No baby is the same and what worked wonders for some moms won't make a darn of a difference with your baby. You might not find anything that really 'works.' Know that is ok and it doesn't mean your a failure for not comforting your baby.

What worked best with Jenna was motion...and not the kind in a rocking chair. I would hold her and walk around the house while swaying her side to side for HOURS. She hated the car, stroller, and anything that involved you sitting...except nursing, she loved to nurse. It was really exhausting. But know that it DOES pass! It will peak at around 6 weeks and by 12-16 it should pass.

It may be worth a trip to the Dr to rule out ear infections, reflux, food allergies. But don't be surprised if your Dr tells you your baby is perfectly healthy.

Get whatever help you can. Dealing with colic alone is the worst! When DH gets home from work, leave and run some errands. I know I felt bad having others watch her b/c I know how hard it was to listen to a baby cry like that...especially when it isn't your baby. But don't feel bad People love you and want to help. Hopefully you have good family and friends in the area. If not, hire someone for a couple hrs here and there. You won't regret it!

On a positive note...I've been told babies with colic have higher IQs as adults (I was told this by another colic mother of course, haha)

The higher IQs... I find that very interesting because Taylor had it and is extremely advanced for her age. Not trying to seem like Rylie is slow but she learns at a much slower pace than what Taylor did at Rylie's age and Rylie didn't have colic

awwwwwww poor jacob *muah* (kisses from auntie sarah)

great advice from everyone. just know that even when he's crying he loves that you are with him! i agree with having df take him for an hour or two when he gets home from work too, a break can only help!

i keep forgetting that its summer there, can you try taking him out in the stroller?

I know hylands makes colic tablets also gripe water is the natural version of mylicon and doesn't have the possible side effect of constipation (but probiotics would most likely help that also).

I used Mylicon and probiotics with Brayden. But just remember, sometimes there's nothing that you can really do. What really helped Brayden stop crying (and this is odd LOL) was when DHa nd I would talk really loud, I'm tlaking borderline yell at each other.....we'd have normal conversation at a yell because it always made him stop. Music helped him too. Laying him on his tummy on my legs helped.

If it was something in your diet you'd see physical signs of it-rash, green stool or lots and lots of mucous, etc. I've never tried gripe water or hylands.

Oh and I remember the nurse at the pedi's office (who was also my nurse as a kid) said Colic would last either 3 or 6m.....never end sooner or last longer. Brayden was a 6m colic baby and it lasted exactly 6m!

This helped us *sometimes* too. In fact, I started putting her on her tummy to sleep at 5 weeks old b/c she seemed so much more comfortable this way.

I can see how that would help Angela. It would help to stretch things out a bit in there! I think a lot of times colic is because they haven't quite grown to fit their guts so to speak. I know in Brayden's case the GI docs said his intestines were all jammed in there and that he would literally outgrow his problems. They were right.

so in that sense I can see how a baby yoga would most definitely help!

That and the fact that their lil nervous systems are so new, and there are so many nerves in the tummy that there could be a cross over and cause pain----and once again baby yoga would help that too.

Erin had a lot of great things to say with good advice. I think Oliver had a bit of colic too. He outgrew it by 12 weeks. It got better maybe around 6 weeks. What worked best was walking around and holding Oliver upright with his head on my shoulder. Night time before bed was the worse. He had a lot of gas and I would try to work it out of him which helped.

i would try avoiding dairy completely. Just to let you know, most probiotics contain dairy.

Good luck with that. I hope you get things settled soon. I hear colic can be terrible, but it doesn't last forever!

(((HUGS)))

Colic is so tough to deal with. It is so hard on the baby and I think even harder on the parents. Try not to get frustrated when it's really bad.

A friend of mine found that her baby settled better with the hum of the fridge (white noise I guess) so she would put him in his bouncer in the kitchen and she said that worked.

Amara wasn't colicky but she was gassy and I used to put her to lie on her side or tummy as she seemed more comfortable in those positions.

I've heard that elevation of the crib mattress or bassinet works as well.

I've heard that most babies outgrow it by 3/4 months which I guess probably seems like forever at this point. I hope you find something that helps.

If the probiotics/gripe water don't work you can always try drastically changing your diet. I have heard of moms eating only chicken and rice and then adding other foods in slowly to see if anything bothers the baby.

*hugs* IF it's your diet the main culprit out there is dairy. Oh and Culturelle for kids probiotics is one that doesn't have dairy in it.
