Ugh.
So, J.J has been coughing at night again a lot -- started 6 weeks after his surgery to remove his adenoids. We figured its either his tonsils or acid reflux. We stopped his acid reflux medicine after his adenoids came out because he is a train wreck on them. His behavior is horrible when hes on the meds. He seems to be ok with out them for the most part.
We were told with his adenoids out there was a 10% chance his tonsils could grow (I told the doctor to expect this, she laughed and dismissed me). On a scale of 1-4, his tonsils prior to the surgery were enlarged at a 2. Today, they are at a 4. Since he is under 2 and they don't remove tonsils in kids this young, he has to get a sleep study to prove his tonsils are blocking his airway causing his coughing at night (reactive cough due to blockage of his airway). On top of that, since he is a possible reflux kid, first he has to get the reflux under control, and needs the endoscopy to check to see about the reflux with the G.I doctor.
Once we prove/disprove reflux and control it or whatever, then we have to get the sleep study to prove his tonsils are in the way of his airway, and then we have to see a specialist Pediatric ENT surgeon to remove his tonsils since the procedure is risky and difficult in children under 2.
They won't remove his tonsils with the reflux uncontrolled because there will be nothing to block the acid thus acid on freshly removed tonsils = infection/extreme pain/prolonged healing.
2 anesthetic procedures. Not happy
On top of that, we can not find any reflux medicine that J.J is ok with. He's allergic to Axid, Zantac makes his behavior terrible, and Prilosec/Prevacid makes him not eat.
When can I catch a break?
At least he's not having any more ear infections. (Both his tubes are still in and clear)

Poor kiddo
Seamus has both adenoids and tonsils out but he was 2yrs 2mo old when they did it (which required us to stay 24hrs post surgery on what is a normal outpatient surgery). He had sleep apena from how large his were too, you could hear the kid snoring 3+ rooms away (with door closed) then he would stop and start again. Its scary.
I hope they can get his reflux controlled so he can get the tonsils out and get some good sleep.

Poor kid!
I just want to offer support as I can relate to how tough this whole process it. I have a nephew whose very allergic/reactive as well and I've been there with my sister going through tests after tests. He wears 2 medical bracelets and both are full of his triggers. But he's now 11 and he has improved alot over the years so I'm hoping the same will happen with J.J. He's going to be a super, tough cookie when he grows up.

Wow, that sounds like such a mess. Your poor little boy I hope all those steps you have to take to get this problem solved doesn't take months and months.
I cannot imagine how uncomfortable he is. Does he hate the Drs by now? You are a super mommy for getting him through all of this.

poor little guy!
i've done sleep studies with my sister (she has severe sleep apnea due to crouzon's syndrome). she tolerates them really well, so here's hoping JJ has an easy time of the sleep study too. at least they will have a much better idea of what is making him cough and exactly when, that'll be a relief.
*hugs*

Thanks ladies
He surprisingly does not hate doctors yet. We try and group as many appointments into one day as possible so that he forget about them later. The last 3 months he's had a nice break from doctors. He's got his 18 month check up coming up too (same day we see his GI doctor)
Thankfully I spoke with the pulmonologist today that he has to see and they don't think he has anything like asthma since hes active and only coughs at night. They said they let the kids fall asleep and then they place "stickers" on them which monitor them. I told them good luck with that one. As soon as he realizes somethings on him hes gonna freak out. Sleeping or not. So we'll see what happens. I am not looking forward to a night at the sleep center. But first, we gotta do the endoscopy which we are hoping to get done by early March.

He has already been through so much. I really hope this sorts everything out. It must be so hard on all of you. I hope that sleep study goes well. Do you think he will go to sleep okay in a strange place? I can only imagine doing something like that with my little guy.
DH and I did a sleep study once for research years ago and we could not sleep! It was awful. We had to have blood drawn every hour (can't remember how often but it was often) and sleep with a rectal thermometer up our butts. We were on a low calorie diet too. We couldn't take it and left before the night was over.

I don't think he'll sleep in a strange place. Not only that but when you touch him or move him when he is asleep, he wakes right up. The other option is to just wait 6 months till he is 2.

Your little guy is like my lil guy.. One thing after another..
I hope he gets better soon..
A.J is getting tubes placed in a couple of days.. I hope my guy is well enough.. Darn Asthma is acting up again. They mentioned his adnoids, but the ENT wanted to wait a few more years.. From the horror stories I've heard, I'm going to do that as a last resort..

Tubes were a breeze. J.J has not had 1 ear infection since.
His adenoids has to go. They were so large they were actually growing INTO his nose preventing all breathing through his nose. We had zero problems after the procedure, J.J was back at day care the very next day.
Tonsils however, I've read not so great stories about kids under 2 getting them taken out by surgeons who are not specialized in the procedure in young children. My biggest concern and finding out if he has reflux or not because if hes got reflux, we might have to leave the tonsils in for a bit.
It does not help that J.J has the flu right now, either. All the mucus is catching onto his tonsils causing a nasty cough.

If you don't mind me asking.. How do they check the adnoids? I'm hoping they don't find anything when A.J is under anesthesia..
My little guy seems to be always sick..
