Does you toddler drink cow's milk/soy/rice/almond/hemp etc? If so how much per day? Do the chug it down or only sip on it a little?

The reason I ask is that Oliver has never had an interest in drinking much of anything besides breastmilk. He drinks water through out the day. He has never drank more than maybe 2 oz of milk at one time. I don't offer him milk often. I never think to because he usually doesn't want it. Even with juice he has never been interested in more than a few sips. I see other kids his age and younger sucking down 8 or 10 oz of milk in a couple minutes. He has never done that with any liquid. I always assumed it was because he breastfeeds but I think it's also just the way he is. I don't think he would drink much of anything besides water if he weaned tomorrow. I also don't think it has anything to do with the taste of milk. He has had eggnog, chocolate milk, and other types of drinks and it's always the same. He likes the way it tastes and sometimes ask for some but only likes a few sips. He does gulp down water when he is super thirsty and I know he is getting enough fluids. He eats plenty of yogart and other dairy products to get his calcium. I'm not worried about it but just wondering if other toddlers who still nurse are similar.

Oh and as you can see in my new siggy.. he enjoys hot tea.

The tea siggy is so cute!

I would say Matthew drinks anywhere from half a sippy to 2 sippy fulls a day (of hemp milk). I'm not sure how much a sippy holds, it's one of the bigger straw ones. I give him milk during all 3 meals and that is all he gets, unless he were to ask for water. Then I give him water the rest of the day unless he asks for milk then I'll get it out of the fridge. If we're out and about he just gets water only.

When I first started offering him the milk he would only drink one or two sips of it the whole meal. But gradually he started drinking it more and liking it to where now he will drink it well. I'm glad b/c since he can't have dairy he needs the calcium from it.

He gets juice maybe once or twice a week and he LOOOOVEs it but he also just loves sweet things and fruit. I have no idea how much juice he'd drink if I let him have as much as he wanted.

All that said, he is nursing but I know he is getting less than he used to. It's hard to gauge how much milk he is getting from me.

We aren't breastfeeding anymore but I was a breastfeeding mom of a toddler.

Kieran would drink 1-2 glasses (8-9oz) of whole milk a day since she was 13mo old.

I'm not bf'ing, but Jaxon isn't a huge drinker either.

We only offer him milk (organic, whole) twice per day. When he first wakes up in the AM and then right before bed. He drinks 6 oz each time, for a total of 12 oz. The milk he usually chugs down relatively quickly. If I offer it during the day in a sippy, he won't touch it.

Other than that, he has a sippy full of water available all day. He takes a couple sips whenever the mood strikes him. He drinks anywhere from 4-10 oz water per day. Sometimes its almost nothing!! Sometimes it doesn't seem like it takes in enough liquids, but I figure he will drink if he is thirsty.

He has never had any juice (other than a sip of mine from time to time). He seems to like it but I would prefer him to get used to drinking water... something I am not good at myself.

London has never had milk or juice (besides the occasional person "helping' me out and giving him a sip). He drinks water, and water with fruit slices/pieces in it for a different flavor. and he only nurses now about 2-3 times a day (morning/nap/bedtime)...and I'm pretty sure those wells are about dried up at this point. So really its just water for hydration.
Most people give kids milk for calcium and fat to my knowledge. the average 1-3 yr old should get 500mg of Calcium a day... which he gets from his food. And he gets enough fat from his foods. So *I* don't see the major importance with milk...... and I know this is because we travel that I think that way....let me explain..... I don't have access to milk thats not ultra pasteurized (stuff on the shelf that doesn't need to be in the fridge YUCK!). Most countries don't have it, they just eat their calcium. So I wouldn't have much a choice even if I was a big believer in milk....and I LOVE ME SOME FRESH ORGANIC 2% out of a cold glass jug.....mmmmmmmmmmmm LOVe IT! (sorry pregnancy craving kicked in LOL)

Also you know how certain cultures people "smell"? Its because of their diet (indian food, high levels of seafood etc). If you ask most others what the "american smell is" ....they tell you rotten milk! LOL I found that funny because when we were gone for a long time in china I noticed I got their smell, and when I came back I thought we smelled like bad milk! Its SO true and just something weird I thought I would share...not really having to do with the topic! sorry.

She drinks water and juice but won't go near any kind of milk. She's allergic to dairy so we haven't even tried that, but we've tried almond, soy, and hemp. She spits it out.

I share your same views on not needing milk in his diet. But I will let him have it if he asks for it and I offer it to him on occasion. I only buy organic non-homogenized 100% grass fed whole milk from a family owned artisan dairy farm that is local. They also have awesome european style yogart and cottage cheese that Oliver likes. It's the next best thing to raw milk. I could get raw milk locally too but I don't feel comfortable enough with it. I don't think it's worth the risk.

That is funny about americans smelling like milk. Yuck! I'm guessing other countries don't drink milk like we do?

Brayden wouldn't drink ANYTHING except breastmilk or cranberry juice until after he was weaned----so nearly 3yrs old! He'd even gag on it. To finally get him to drink milk his pedi suggested chocolate milk. He said getting him to drink it outweighed the add'l sugars that could be in it. After that I began to fix him chocolate milk using the vitamin supplement powders that flavor it chocolate. He still loves it that way, but will also drink plain white milk now.

as if we smell like rotten milk!! oh wait a minute, i'm not american....maybe i smell like tim hortons coffee or maple syrup or something.....

payne gets offered water all day at daycare, my MIL gives him fat free milk (don't even get me started, its a miracle if i can keep her from giving him splenda laden yogurt), and he gets regular milk at his home. he does drink quite a bit i think, but he's not BF anymore or consuming breastmilk at all.

Maple syrup LMAO!!!! Now when we met someday I'm going to have to sniff you! LOL

Resi--I have only found cold fridge milk in a handful of countries. Its rare and usually in the "import" (aka expensive) section of the store. Europe was my best locations for milk.

Mmm, I am loving organic whole milk right now! You just have to have milk when eating cake or cookies.

I could not agree more! Damon doesn't drink milk at all because he thinks it's gross. He use to drink it when but stopped several years ago. I only drink it when eating cake, cookies, pie, chocolate, etc. I eat those things often so I have to have good milk in the house. I think it tastes gross without something sweet though. I also use it to cook often. I only plan on buying whole milk. I use to buy skim a couple years ago but now I know that the whole milk is better for us.

Resi - Your siggy is so cute!

Angela - Your post was really reassuring to me. Logan is dairy and soy intolerant, and I'm going to be breastfeeding after he turns 1, but I will also be working full time and I have been trying to figure out if it really is SO important for him to have something other then whatever I can pump on my lunch break and water when I'm not with him. The LC that I see was even pushing hydrolyzed formula. I don't think that's necessary at all, and after going a year without giving him a drop, I am certainly not introducing it.

Dustin was my longest nurser... and he only nursed until 13 or 14 months.. but he did either or just fine. Now the boys get a splash of juice with a sippy of water. They get a sippy of milk before bedtime but that seems to be fading out...

I just want to keep them drinking it often, just so that they keep liking it... hard to explain haha. I hate milk, I think its so gross... but I do think it's a healthier alternative to juices and pop etc... so I want to keep a drink of milk in their day to day diet, so when they are older it can still be an option. Does that make sense?

I never BF Mia but just wanted to chime in shes not really a big milk drinker either, She never really has been. Unless she is poorly then she will drink it like its going out of fashion. She does however get it in forms of yoghurt and cheese so I dont really worry.

Angela - I don't know how you could live without nice milk! - Id be lost if I couldn't have it on my cereal or in my coffee! Coffee whitener just don't work for me!
Also, I would love to see you sniff Sarah, So if that meet up occurs please please please record it!

Well, Henry isn't BFd but I thought I'd share what he drinks

I only offer milk (whole milk) at mealtimes. He drinks only a few sips at each meal. He does however eat lots of cheeses, yogurt, etc. But he chugs water all day. Usually I have to refill his sippy 4-5 times (the large straw sippy ones)! Oh and he doesn't get juice unless he's constipated.

It was the biggest cultural change for me. And while preggo it really sucks I MISS MY MILK! Troy is lactose intolerant....so he doesn't care.
And I will tape me sniffing! LOL
