On Wednesday night, J.J started running a 102.4 fever (this was after 2-3 days of a cough with no fever). I called his ped and she doesn't want to see him unless his fever passes the 5 day mark (which is Monday night) or is over 103 and we can't control it. She gave his dosage for triaminic cough and cold for him, but that does not seem to help all too much (i think it just decreases the production of mucous, he still coughs). She thinks currently we are dealing with the flu. However no one at day care has the flu OR RSV.

He's had a fever (running from 100.5-101.8). With Tylenol we can get it to 99.0-99.5, With Motrin & Tylenol alternating, it drops to 98.3ish and he's normal and fine and eating and playing again. I prefer NOT to give him both motrin and tylenol because fevers are there for a reason, however he is dropping weight again fast and he already dropped from 75% to 40% and now is dropping lower.

Other symptoms:

- Not eating (since Thursday he's eaten 3 yogurts and a small bowl of mac and cheese and 1 cracker)
- Wet Cough (not coughing it up and out though). His lungs are clear (i have a stethoscope)
- Runny nose (clear colored, which rules out a sinus infection)
Sneezing
- Congestion
- "The runs" (I am assuming from the meds and lack of food).
- Vomiting (from coughing only, and there's TONS of mucous in it)
- Possible sore throat (he has been refusing liquids, we are forcing him to take bottles and drink pedilyte at night)

RSV and the Flu have such similar symptoms. Both are running widespread here in NY. If its any help, i started developing a sore throat and runny nose myself yesterday.

Is there a way to tell the two apart?

Well with us flu came on suddenly. RSV typically would be more as you described with Brayden and it peaks at around day 5-7 for him.) When he had the flu he was slammed with a fever and cough right off the bat. First time he'd ever had a fever too (even though he had all the EI's no fever with them!) and it was 103, and nothing brought it down. When I got it off of him (3 days into his) I was totally fine, took a 3 hour nap since I'd been up all night with him, and woke up with a 104 temp, body aches and a massive head ache. I then coughed so hard I broke a rib on my left side. After 5 days of the cough and temp, he got diarrhea (and so did I) and then we each proceeded to puke up our dimetap and all better on day 10 with flu. With RSV that didn't happen and the fever wasn't as high and it didn't slam us all at once. But each person is different. And for cough, Delsym can't be beat! Triaminic is ok for some (and i do give that to B) but I only give him Delsym for coughs, on top of his breathing treatments.

Well Henry has never (knock on wood) had the flu but he did have RSV about a yr ago. He had a low grade fever that we could control with meds. He coughed alot, refused it eat much but he did take liquids okay. In fact all I could get him to eat was his bottle. He was very congested and had to take many breaks when he was drinking. Oh and he was extremely tired. The thing that scared me was his chest was rattling, he wheezed, and and when he breathed in, the skin wouls suck in tight by his ribs. He was like only 9 months so we took him to the ER (we were on a business trip with DH 12 hrs from home!) and they had to give him a breathing treatment. They also gave us an inhaler and that worked WONDERS! He had 2-3 treatments of that a day. And we had to use saline spray for his congestion.

Adeline was better within a week when she had rsv but she had a mild case. Her symptoms were runny nose and a bad cough. She never had fever.

From what I know they have similar symptoms and can be anywhere from mild to severe. In the hospital we never know until their cultures come back.

At this point, it doesn't really matter if it is RSV or the flu. You're doing the same supportive treatment either way. Unless it gets to the point where he needs to be admitted to the hospital, they'll test him then I'm sure.

Kylie had RSV and it lasted about a week and a half. She just had cold and cough symptoms and was very whiny and sleepy, and had an occasional low grade fever. They do a test for RSV and hers came back positive, but I was told to treat it like RSV, plenty of fluids and rest, and if she was having trouble breathing I was told to bring her to the ER. She was wheezy at times, but mostly just coughing a lot and unhappy.

Brayden's symptoms were usually over in 7-10days. Fever for 5-6 of those. He had it twice in one season thanks to his immune system problem----most develop the antibodies to protect against it---immunity----he didn't, and still doesn't fully. Dr was shocked when he tested + both times.

Henry was sick for at least a week that I can remember. But I think the meds and treatments really helped that along.

It's sounds like a virus that Jett has (kids I watch). He had a fever for a couple days, wet cough, sneezing, and runny nose. Oliver and I got it a week later but we had no fever. I hope JJ feels better soon.

My son had Broncholitis when he was 4 months old.. Which is a typical sign for RSV.. He tested negative for it though.. He spent 5 days in the hospital.

There is no treatment for RSV.. You just treat the symptoms.

HealthyChildren.org - Bronchiolitis

Here's a video you should watch.. It's about RSV awareness and what happens to a young child when he/she get is..

YouTube - RSV Awareness Slide Show

YouTube - RSV Virus Warning Video - KFOR News Channel 4 Oklahoma City, Ok
